How many tonnes of steel lie on the bottom of the oceans, and some of you say it's much better than recycling it. Oh right.....there is no unemployment in the states, and abroad right now is there, and there are no abandoned steel factories, and steel towns are there? Getting my point here. No wonder you americans are trillions in debt, jobless, foreclosed on, and having a potential government shutdown. Will be odd to have the Chinese as our southern neighbours very soon. They own you.
Sadly the HMCS Frazer is now in Dunnville, Ontario where I live and she is being turned into scrap. This is a much more honourable death than what is in store for the HMCS Frazer. I seen her yesterday all shock up and I might add ugly. At least the HMCS Huron went down in glory
I was on there from 89- 92 as well. Fond memories of the circumnavigate tour with great stops in the Bahrain, Qatar and UAE. Who could forget the Gibraltar fiasco that got us all a little time off in a really crazy place. Glad to see a lot of positive comments on here. She was a great lady.
I remember watching this the day they sunk her. Considering her sisters are still in service, sinking the Huron was a disgusting waste of taxpayers money/government asset.... courtesy of the Liberal government of the time. They could have sold her.....what a waste of a good ship. Sad to see this again.
I served on the Huron from 1977 until 1979. I did a google search out of curiosity. I did not realize she had been sunk. It felt weird watching her sink.
I was posted to HMCS Yukon when Huron came to the West coast. I drank a few beers aboard her. We sailed with her to Japan and South Korea. she was the best the Cdn Navy had at that time.
wow, I served with her in 96-97, I hated her with all my guts (never been so seasick in my entire life) but to see her here, makes me feel like I am seeing my best friend's last moments.
I served aboard the Huron while on the West Coast in '88. She was a fine ship, and unlike the unofficial motto "ain't no fun aboard the 281'...she carried us in fine form and with pride. Good memories.
i study the titanic and looking at some of this is kinda like seeing what the titanic itself would have done like standing straight upwards before sinking. hate me if you will
All my Navy buds wanted to be there for that. My best friend who is in Sonar Ops even begged to be allowed on the excersice to watch the sinking. Had to settle for the live footage coming back to the base instead.
I served on the Huron from the spring of 1977 until the spring of 1979 (as a Radioman). It saddened me to realize she's been sunk, and it surprised me to feel that way. She was a good ship and I'm sorry she's gone.
The Huron's fate was a good one, a warriors death. Better that then the razor blade fate many good warships suffer. The ship had no internal watertight control as all the hatches were removed or welded open. Due to uncontrolled flooding she sank before her grand ending with a torpedo.
I sailed on this Lady form 1986/87. Also helped bring her around to Victoria at that time from Halifax. I was promoted to PO whilst I was on board her. To see this it was very sad for me. I had no idea she had been sunk. Even sadder that she was sunk by her own gun. This video brings many truly happy memories back to me. On investigations the CF 18's only did some practice runs on her firing some rounds, as she was already going down when they where engaged. God bless all who served her
I sailed on her in the late 70's when she was the flag ship of the NATO Squadron. Spliced the mainbrace at Spithead, soaked up a lot of sun & suds at Rosey Roads, hitchhiked through Norway, rode across on a jackstay in the North Sea, crossed the Arctic Circle & enjoyed many adventures ashore as well as in 10 mess. I still have the yellow T shirt & the XO's cap. It brought a tear to my eye to see her go down like this....
Remember her well, sailed pre and post trump. First gulf war with her was a hoot, drank a lot of beer and watched a lot of porn,, being broken down in Gibraltar was also a hoot, yes, the good old days.
I watched this on the History Channel I think. When she went under, I cried. But on the other hand realized it takes a lot of firepower to sink one of our ships. WTG Navy you got it done. I was so impressed with the expertise of our guys.
i was crew of huron. in 95 we had a fire and flood in the 76mm magazine. i was the diver that went down there and helped save her. to see her come to this fate is horrifying
i wonder what aircraft they'll have here this year i live in central sannich onmy family farm we get the fighter jets and flying over the farm just about every day during this exercise
I saw the SINKEX on the History Channel but see little reason your fleet should gloat at beating your air force to the punch. Had this been a battle, with a live enemy shooting back, many sailors would have died, on both sides, before any ship sank, because such light arty isn't decisive quickly enough. Your air force could have sunk Huron, almost immediately, with a couple of 1,000 lb bombs (if the planes weren't shot down).
We'll never really know. If it had been real it could have been a rape like the Hood vs. Bismarck, With one lucky hit or it could have been a SOB like how the Royal Navy finally sunk the Bismarck.
You know how we are supposed to muster by divisions for survival stations on the flight deck? Guess it wouldn't work all that well in that situation :)
Cool watching, maybe CF188s, overflying her. I'm glad the fleet put her down instead of the air force or the USN.
I sailed on the Huron from 1981-84 and have a lot of great memories of sucking back the brewskies in the mess before heading ashore exploring. Good times. Too bad Lt. Commander Beaudry wasn't on there when she went down. Haha. Splice the main brace.
That's a tough little Destroyer, it took forever to sink and there were no damage control parties aboard. plus all the water tight doors were left open
well if she's so tough just imagine how the other 3 Iroquois class destroyers would be crewed if, God forbid, it ever came to the situation. Mind you she had no ammunition & fuel, and took what was it? a Sea-Sparrow to her forward missle bays.
she woulda been a big old mess if she had had missiles in her forward missile bays when the sea spaorrow hit, boom, and does anyone know how many american ships took part in this
I just watched the show on this exercise on the History Channel. It seems to me a big waste of training opportunity by removing all the watertight doors. It must of disappointing to the other crews not having the chance to have a crack at it. Dumb planning
On the contrary, it took a great deal of planning. Not only were watertight doors removed, but more holes were cut through bulkheads. The Clearance Diver EOD team had set up explosive charges throughout, as it would have been too dangerous to go back aboard had she only partially sunk. The goal was to train the Ops Room surface warfare teams. Everyone present had the opportunity to fire their guns, including the MCDVs and US Coast Guard.
Well my dad would be sad to see this. He served his time with you traveling the world and serving his Country. You had a great run. Take care and i Salute you Andrea Crawford Daughter of Corpral Rick Crawford
Seems like such a waste not transfering this ship along with the other three in its class to patrol domestic inland waters (aka Hudson's Bay) once the new artic patrol vessels and Provincial class destroyers come on line. Leastthere would be full coverage in these waters albeit the ships being a little past their prime.
Well old girl it looks like you would have given your a crew a hell of a chance. Taking that much of a beating and still taking that long to go under with no one trying to save you.
always sad to see a ship you served on go under, 2 ships i served on in the RNZN have gone this way HMNZS Waikato and HMNZS Wellington, a 3rd i served on HMNZS Canterbury will be following soon, i thought out of the RN and RNZN they would have kept a Leander class as a type of floating museum but sadly not to be, probably no more leanders left when Canterbury goes
HMCS Huron, indeed quite the ship. I never had the luxury of sailing on her and Now sail on the east coast tanker. How many hits did she take before going down? What I think to be interesting it took a Hit from her own gun to take her down. Now she will remain as a Diving adventure for sure
I was a BWK on the bridge of Algonquin during the shoot, manning the SEOSS that recorded the footage. She took a great many hits before going down, and it was all gunnery that did the damage, not the Sea Sparrows as some seem to think. She's not likely to be a dive site, though - about 40 miles offshore, and sank in >2000m!
I too served on Huron. Also did a few years on Algonquin. Huron was the finest of the 280's. Even when, unmanned, unarmed and attacked by her own fleet she put up a great fight. Imagine what she could do when she was The Fighting 281! This was no way to treat such a magnificent ship. How degrading.
The Seakings should be sent to museums or used for training soldiers of the ADATS or Ship Air Defense. It would make an honourable end to their careers. And as for the Huron, its better she went out with the respect at the hands of her sister ships, than with the dishonourable US Navy Mk.48s and foreign hands.
At the age of 17, I can only guess you haven't served in your country's military. As a 20-year veteran of the Armed Forces in The United States, I am more than aware of the need to destroy old warships via GUNEX (Gunnery Exercise), and though sad, every modern naval service accross the globe has sacrificed their vessels in the name of necessary training. It is a necessary "evil", if you will. And FYI, U.S. AND Canadian forces sank the Huron, and don't question the HONOR of then USN youngster!
It seemed a little bit more aft then 12 mess when we shot at her. Just a little side point to note, it was Algonquin that sank her with a gun that originally came off of Huron. I believe were in a somewhat unigue position of sinking a sster ship.
