If I had to choose between d90 and d300s I'd go for d90. Both are not pro cameras and I'd go for the lighter and easier to use camera that is the d90. The buttons, settings and switching to live view is a lot simpler and. Both cameras have pretty much the same cropped sensor so I'd go with the smaller camera. However, if I want a big, sturdy top level camera, well that's d3xs but wouldn't be taking random shots in the park with it that I'm not making money from.
The D300s is superior to the D90. People need to read the specs. 11 focus points vs 51 focus points, 4.5fps vs 7 fps, stereo ext microphone, etc. You duds still consider the D90 better. What a bunch of buffoons.
D90 is a great camera so is the D300/D300s. If you are a traveler going to places in harsh conditions I DO NOT recommend D90. I love my D300s and D700 for their magnesium alloy body with all weather resistant cover. A friend bought my D90 and he shoots amazing pictures with it. He does mostly portraits and shoot night/long exposure mostly. He doesn't travel much like I do. I do mostly landscapes, wildlife and some sports. D300s better suited for my ventures.
I just wish you had placed your video camera at a better angle... i really hate when people does this kind of comparissons and place the video camera at an angle that doesnt give the right perspective of the subjects... anyway thanks.
ever heard the saying: "A carpenter makes the table not his tools" Or perhaps, "Its not size that matters, its how you use it" Considering the second quote is out of context, the basic principle still applies. I've taken photo's on my L22 that a professional newspaper snapper couldn't tell from my D90 /70-300 combo.
@300582228 The movie mode doesn't come into it. Many things separate these cameras. They are basically the same apart from the D90 produces better IQ, better high iso pix and a few other things for 1/2 the price, end of story.
Anyone buying a DX body at the moment will choose the D90 or D300S fact....
Anyway im not gonna argue about cameras, its all about the photos you take not the machine you use...
I have done my research and i also have owned both cameras (had the d300 for 2 years and now have the d3 and d90).
The D90 has a slightly newer sensor and higher iso's have so much less noise! Its a newer camera! Its also lighter, much cheaper and produces better long exposure results and it cleans its own sensor..
That is just the tip of the iceberg.
The D300s is much better than both these cameras and is now the leading DX body...
You clearly are miss informed as the d90 and d300 perform the same and in some cases the d90 produces better photos especially in lower light. The d300s is obviously better but not by miles at all....
They are not in very different classes as far as IQ goes, it would be like comparing a Porsche 911 to a Porsche 911 turbo.
@deepseabadger ...i agree... But you forgot to say that in that case the 911 and the 911 turbo would be sharing the same turbo engine and maybe the "non turbo 911! would have some more HP, yet the 911 would still have more gadgets. LOL
@deepseabadger now a days pro camera does not mean comparison of image quality but more on ergonomics, handling, durability, weather sealing, shutter life, shutter speed, backward compatibility mostly mechanical kind of stuff. you cannot find these things in cheap cameras. electronics is cheap but mechanical and optical things are still very expensive.
If u got the extra money just forget the D90 and a D300s. But if you don't need the video invest on a D700 which is a great tool all around and even in low light. Not that the D300s is a pushover but the D700 performs much better at high ISO. The D300s has a 1.5x crop factor meaning your lens see much further and performs well at high ISO. I shoot ISO1600 for concerts and weddings and the pictures are great if you're not printing or zooming in full size.
Hi, 18-200mm lens is very versatile but min aperture is F5.6 if zoomed to 200mm meaning youd need to use flash or push into high ISO if youre shooting with available light under low light situations. So this is one thing to consider. If it were me (budget conscious) I will go for a 50mm f1.8, Tamron cheap but very useful 17-50mm F2.8 and SB-600 flash. Just my opinion. The 18-200mm VR II is still a really great lens though.
this comparison has no logic

d90d7000 size comparison ? :)
Xaaser 1 year ago
@Xaaser read my comment, they are exactly the same size. d7000 slighty, slighty bigger.
ithree6mafia 11 months ago
@Xaaser very similar. i think d7000 weighs a bit more because its magnesium body.
vancouverdogdowncast 11 months ago
the d90 is the same exact size as the new Nikon D7000, thumbs up for that information.
ithree6mafia 1 year ago
It's the image quality that counts and in that regrad there's very, very little to choose between them as they use the same image sensor.

D300s is noisy at ISO400, noisier than D90. I would rather get D700 anyday. But 5DMarkii is still the best consumer product all around.

Unless you just want a sturdier (able to handle more abuse and knocks) I don't really see going to a D300s from a D90 as much of an upgrade at all.
In terms of Image quality the D90, D300, and D300s are pretty much identical.
martinaee 1 year ago
how can you compare the D90 and the D300 or D300s? Totally a different classes those cameras...

Maybe someone wants to upgrade to a D300s, from a D80/90, and is curious on the size difference... Or like me, curious of it's size.
