Betcha all didnt know...that Art Garfunkel is a school teacher. Shortly after their tour when they broke up, Art went to teach school in the Forman School in my hometown of Litchfield, CT!! He might still be teaching, i dont know. Havent been back there in years. Who would have known?
well, I think the song can mean different thing to different people (even the author himself). Anyway here's what Simon answered in an interview about the song:
In a July 20, 1972 interview for Rolling Stone, Jon Landau asked: "What is it that the mama saw? The whole world wants to know."
Simon replied "I have no idea what it is...
"Something sexual is what I imagine, but when I say 'something', I never bothered to figure out what it was."
Only time I have ever seen Art stare at Paul so much. Well I don't know about hate, they did go on a tour after this, I thought too that he hadn't learned the words to the
song that well so he watches what Paul is singing, Paul had at least 5 songs that
were intended for the both of them and this was the first time they sang them together. I don't think that tour ended too well.
I have a CD that was recorded from the Live Central Park concert album in the 70's, right before this song, Art talks about the guys selling loose joints to the concert goer's, so I always inferred that this song was about pot. heh
Even Paul Simon doesn't know what this song's about, and that is exactly what makes it awesome. Stop placing arbitrary meanings onto a song that genuinely doesn't need it. It's a fantastic piece of music by its own merit and for its own sake.
The song is subjective to the singer. He has made love to a minor girl (Rosie, the queen of Corona, California) and now he has to leave town to avoid "the house of detention". I've always thought that this song was an odd choice for S. St.!
Paul Simon wrote it,bout singer&a friend gettin caught with a j.,subsequent reaction of parents,police,politicians-singer claims everybody does it&everybody(but his parents)agrees, but noone wants to go against the law-then press gets wind of the story,in the end he has to run away..all cause, you see,me and Julio down by the school yard:) (worked f. P.Simon for a few gigs locally&got the chance to talk to him a bit-whoooee,always admired him!Graceland!Rhytm of theSaints!+the old stuff of course

It's about a gay encounter between two kids.

@tramsay1027 I think it was about smoking grass. Simon himself has been evasive in answering what it's about. Open to interpretation.

Julio is an old slang for pot, the song is about a kid who gets caught selling pot in the schoolyard
