Buddy Holly dominated Rock and Roll, a few country influenced songs like this one, and topped the R&B charts, Harlem's Apollo mistakingly booked Buddy Holly for a gig thinking they were a black R&B group!
Loved you now for 53 years, and I'll surely love you forever, dear, sweet Buddy.
Even yet, whenever I'm upset as I was in the early morning hours of February 3rd, 1959, I turn again and again to your powerful voice to restore my sense of well being. And as I had bad news this week, I need you now as never before...
Holl(e)y recorded more good music in two years than most artists record in their entire lifetimes. There is absolutely no comparison with what he did then and the "artists" of today. Not every song was a #1 hit but his legacy is not in those rankings but rather in how he helped shape rocka-billy music and early R&R
Buddy Holly probably would have had a career track similar to Conway Twitty, i.e. primarily a country artist but able to do crossover stuff, Buddy's stuff being more pop-country from the start in a Glenn Campbell vein. Imagine what might have happened if Buddy Holly and Willie Nelson had worked together, coupla TX good-ol'-boys.
@therealjoebloggs id even take it one step further this to me is the original roots of rap music, buddy holly could flow an keep a crowd going, this song to me is about as gangster as radio play would have allowed for.. having a live band of talented musicians just makes this so much more pure an wholesome
RECORDED ON OCT 21 1958 AT THE DICK JACOBS RECORDING SESSIONS IN NEW YORK.. WRITTEN BY PAUL ANKA.. AS SOON AS BUDDY HEARD THE DEMO OF THIS SONG HE WAS SO EXCITED HE TALKED DICK INTO RECORDING IT. IT HAS BECOME ONE OF HIS BEST AND A CLASSIC BUDDY HOLLY SONG!!!!!!
A place in time that society forgot . . . .when music was cool, groovy & innocent and lyrics were clean and people were pure and unspoiled . . . unlike today ~ how they serve our kids a bunch of FILTH where lyrics of gang-sta rap & hip hop- are full of profanity, recording artists are horny sexual beings portrayed in videos & pop stars are admired for getting into hot water with the law - WHAT kind of CRAPis that ??? Just another example of the deterioration of the very fabric that holds us up.
Released Jan 5, 1959. As of Jan 31, this song wasn't on the Top 40 charts in Green Bay, WI, where Holly performed that night. At the Top 5 of the Green Bay WDUZ charts: A Lover's Question/Clyde McPhatter, Manhattan Spiritual/Reg Owens, Stagger Lee/Lloyd Price, Donna/Richie Valens, Nola/Billy Williams. Buddy had been off the charts since August, '58. That must've been on his mind that night, and yet he must've known that he'd made something memorable. Would've loved to have seen him sing it!
@fmnma1 well ritchie only had his career for 6 months so he was experimenting with music so we couldnt really judge him and he was doing great and buddy had his career for a couple of years so yeah haha but i like them both :)
You could be right. Hard to say what would have come of Valens, I do like a few of his songs, no doubt. Buddy, has so many great tunes. One in particular,
"Do you remember baby, last September... well I guess it doesn't matter anymore.. There's no use in me a cryinnggg I've done everything and now I'm sick of trying"
Well you get the point. Agreed, both are fantastic though. They will live in music history, forever. The 50s sure were a great era for music.
@fmnma1 I agree. I love Buddy's voice it was very suited for Rock, it was smooth yet in some songs its very rough. So he was able to do those loud and dancing songs and those quiet happy ones. That's what I love about his music. I admire Ritchie, considering at the time it was rare for him to be someone thousands of people look up to. Also the fact that I live near Panorama is also interesting. I like them both and others too, just a shame most of these famous singers died young.
Yes, that plane crash was so very devastating to the music industry, but music will live forever. Of course I love the 60s, 80s, 90s and today... Strange how I fall in love with a song the second I hear it. As a kid, growing up in the 80s, my Mother a hippie, I fell in love with the 50s as well. Cheers to good times, and good music.
@fmnma1 Very true, this music did inspire other decades to, like the Beatles covered many artists including Buddy. But I was born late 90's towards the 2000's so I don't have much connection with this type of music, considering the fact my parents didn't live here at the time, which I think can suck but I do still like those type of music you pointed out. Even the ones today but I usually go by lyrics so my taste can be pretty much everywhere haha.
TRUE LOVE WAYS WAS HIS LAST IT WAS RELEASE AFTER HE DIED.....PRETTY SONG THAT1...A FINAL DEPARTING LOVE SONG...SO YOUNG SO TALENTED...SO LONG BUDDY...BUT YOU LIVE IN THE HEART OF YOUR FANS ..BUDDY HOLLY LIVES ON!!!!!!!!1
Those rotten bastards blocked True Love Ways! Damn it I hate VEVO! Go soak your head somewhere but get it out of our asses and let us get on with listening to what music we like.
@timminsmeet I heard that he recorded Love is Strange the night before the crash. In the hotel with his personal recorder. They later added the other instruments and released the song.
Sad news for all Buddy Holly fans: The dean of our fraternity, Bill Griggs of Lubbock Texas, THE Buddy Holly expert, true rock and roll fan and researcher extraordinaire, has passed away. We will forever remember his friendship and dedication to great music. Rock On Bill!
This was one of the first pop records to feature classical musicans. The musicians were taken fron the NBC and New York Philharmonic. Apparently they were not that keen to take part but Buddy made the recording stood in front of them just as if it were a concert rather than recording the vocal part in a seperate booth and took complete charge of the situation. In the end everyone was happy as they completed the recording in just one take.
@yankeefan1961 Apparently Anka only turned up with the song the night before the recording. There wasn't time to do much work on the orchestral backing, that's why a rather simple pizzicato arrangement on the strings was used. What a masterstroke this turned out to be as it works perfectly. Of course this recording does add weight to the argument that Buddy had he lived was moving away from Rock n Roll in the same way Elvis Presley did. How sad we shall never know.
@JohnAGood ...JAG, I really feel that there is some sort of divine intervention that takes these wonderful people from us to make us make these people live far beyond their years in a very honorable way. I wouldn't want to see Elvis, old and wrinkled and possibly down-trodden. I'm not saying that's how he would be today, but i wouldn't want to chance it. Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, James Dean and the like are far to valuable to their craft. It is our duty to discuss them.

weird how he wrote all these great songs, yet cover a song [by Paul Anka] and outdo another genius. this month I've been in yet another funk. Too many dead rock heroes. moral of all this has been? stay out of chartered airplanes1 And that Surf ballroom in Iowa still hosts an annual winter dance party. insane. Miss all the dead legends I've seen taken away too soon.
great song ,strange to believe 3 years earlier in 1956 he was recording cutting edge Rockabilly tracks like "Midnight Shift " and " Blue Days,Black Nights" , gotta love Buddy.
Really a great song. This song was written by Paul Anka in 1958. Some reports have this as being recorded in October '58, a few others say it was recorded in a New York studio session for Norman Petty in January 1959, the month before Buddy was killed in the plane crash. Who knows... Just a really great song. I think this song, and "True Love Ways" show the genus of Holly and where his music was headed. Still sounds fresh today! Buddy was one of the greats!
This one was on the charts the day of the plane crash. Buddy recorded this in mid-October 1958 with the NY Philharmonic (the Crickets were back in Texas), and despite very little rehearsal time, this one was recorded in ONE take. The pizzicato strings are just amazing. Thanks for posting this great record!
Always been a Buddy Holly fan; I mean HUGE fan. This was his last hit in the US and I would cry when it played. Recently, I heard Eva Cassidy's cover of this (Paul Anka) song and I have to say, she nailed it. BOTH were gone too soon.
@cunnidvd yes,she does it much better, but if you were in that age group when Buddy was singing, then you would probably like his version.I also dont like the music on Buddys version, just my opinion.
That fabulous hiccup, only Holly could do this and make it sound so natural. Still remember the day and the time I first heard of his death. Wonder what he would have done with his music? What a shame.
Paul Anka gave this song to Buddy when he was living in New York during the famous string sessions with producer,Dick Jacobs. Buddy was so eager to do the song that he literally rushed in the door of the session he was doing and begged Jacobs to do this song on the spot. And the rest is history.
One of the most influential players of that or any era. Sad that he passed away so young, he would have made such a great contribution to the music we enjoy today.
@alanmk5 What the Fcin hell you on about???My mother loved him as a singer...just like the milions for MJ.....your a small mined person...and a Jerk...
By far his best hit, and one of the gems of the rock n' roll era. The strings being played, and plucked during the verse are genius. Absolutely classic
Back in 1974 when I was 11, My Mom bought me a Buddy Holly album, Yea they had Albums back in those days. Anyway I've been hooked ever since. Very cool. My dad was a big Buddy Holly fan and played him for me all the time. It's good to hear this song again.
