@jgbelmont - a little of both - Most of the hair on my arms are fine baby hairs so very hard to see. But my camera sucks crap too - I got a new one that's better - I did a vid on it, the Logitech C910.
Excellent video! All these systems have some cons, it seems. I have a question, if you don't put ANY paste on a strop, what micron equivalent would that work out to?
@pelahale I dont have $370 to give out on this system I am only sharpeing pocket knives such as "Cold Steel, SOG, Spyderco, And Kershaw" knives will the lansky system get my knives sharp? Please Respond
@UsaKnives Lansky is all you need to get clean bevels & scary edges. If sharpness & not neatness is all that counts, you can do it cheaper & easier with about 3 benchstones/cards/blocks from DMT for ~$30 for three.
Great video, thanks for the review. I think I'm going to get it! Also thanks for the tips on how to do those few things cheaper i.e. the base and diamond paste alternative :) One question, can you use this to sharpen scissors? It would seem as though you could but I haven't heard anyone address this.
Great instructional video. Interesting thoughts on micro chipping. I do not do major re-profiling as of yet but I use a loupe and strop to finish. I want this system, I don't want the price. I use the green and black solid rub compound commercially offered on my bench/hand held strops. I feel (at this point) that my hand held technique is more than adequate however the more I learn the more I learn :) Thanks for vid.
Thanks for the great presentation. It looks like a good fail-safe system. It will replace your Lansky for sure. What's the minimum angle you can achieve with the WES for a blade like the Endura?
Skipping from the XXC to C leads to your microchipping problem in the long run. Use the XC then C, I also had this problem with zdp with a low angle.
@rYOUokay I love manual sharpening & still think manual hand sharpening is the most important skill to learn. This WE sharpening is for putting on a pretty edge and for those expensive knives you can't afford to damage.
Very insightful and informative. Great point about the initial impacts that occur when using other sharpening systems. I always wondered how detrimental those little impacts were to a fine edge. I think I might try to build something like this.
Excellent demo and a pretty nice machine. I sucked at sharpening but got the Edgepro. Now I can get a razor sharp, mirror polished edge. I also found the EP expensive, but it works well.
For me it's just not worth the price I have a lansky with 5 stones and a plastic base for around $30. Could use a sapphire polishing stone for $15 and a leather strop (I use a piece of wood) but gets knives hair pooping sharp again.
Tooth brushing tip is a good idea but since I use oil not sure I want all the oil/metal going down the trap but I'll definitely try it.
I do struggle to get the tip of large fixed knives sharp but I've never bothered repositioning them so the grind angle is off.
Do you know of any problems stropping a standard micro V edge, on let's say a Spyderco - so with their hollow grind, 30 degree back bevel, and 40 degree secondary bevel? VIrtuovice seems to grind off the standard V edge on his many water stones, and then proceed to strop, but I have always wondered if that was strictly necessary for non-hunting edge toughness. I'm going to have to watch this again tomorrow - too much interesting stuff to watch in one go. Cheers.
@TheEnglishRedneck45 I think the difference between an edge with a secondary bevel, then a free-hand stropped smoothing and virtuovice-type convexed perfection is just like connecting the dots. They are I bet practically similar in performance, though there might miniscule differences.
@pelahale Yes, I would like to know if there is a difference. It would be interesting if Virtuovice did an edge test of straight from factory and stropped on his white and black compound versus his hand convexing on all those japanese stones, followed by his impeccable stropping but on the same knife. He sure has multiples of the same knives, which is ideal! I really like the way he backs up everything he says with his real world experience and microscopic 'analysis'. Very informative.
Yeah i have no hair on my left hand thanks to this ZDP and Lansky. lol

could you email me the addy for the strop compound? been looking but can't find it and the cost from WE is high.
GUNSnARMYRN 9 months ago
actually if youve treated the strops with the paste, you should wipe off all burrs before you use them. the paste picks up materials very easily.

would you prefer this over free hand sharpening? i wanted to get some japanese water stones, but this looks freakkin awesome. haha

3:00, you meant convex right?
JustinBaker2567 9 months ago
@JustinBaker2567 Yes I meant Convex not Concave - I annotated the mistake, but it seems to show up only on IE.
