I've never seen that Wilkins red card, and remember looking for it once on Youtube. I have to disagree with the late Bobby Robson, it looks as if Wilkins whips the ball aiming for the ref and that should be a sending off. If I remember that was a 0-0 tie vs Morrocco at Mexico 86.

I can't believe the late Bobby Robson tries to defend Ray Wilkins like that. The referee gave Wilkins a second yellow for throwing the ball at him, and even if he had not "stood there and let the ball hit him", the intent was clear and he was absolutely right to send Wilkins off.

However if a player fouls another player really badly and then the referee will award the player will a red card straight away and sent of the field. Also, if you do a simple foul that stops a player, but are the last defender before the goalie, that may also be a straight red. Any aggravation against an opposing player after the referee blows the whistle for stopping play, no matter how minor, is a straight red as well.
