This is swinging! They CARE! A lot of groups don't get that anymore! You gotta snap those lyrics out! Plus all those little slick twists and drops. Groovy! I love this and just about all the stuff they ever did (the new group is quite good too, no?).
That's Hal Kratsch, the original bass singer. This is the first group of the Freshmen. After a couple years he was replaced by Ken Errair for a few more years, and then Ken Albers who was in the group for over 20 years. Hal and Ken Errair are arguably the 2 best bass voices in the groups history.
4 voices singing "5 part" harmony. My favorite 2 versions of this group are these (the originals) and the current group. I also think that Kratsch and Calderon are the 2 best trumpeters that the group has had...and 2 very different styles.
What do you mean ?? How can 4 voices sing 5-parts ? Are you referring to them jumping around from one part to another ? Just curious. Always wanting to learn more. Thanks
@BeachBoysGuy1 What it means is that you often have 5 note chords. For example, Dm9 contains D, F, A, C, E, and that could resolve to G13(b9), which contains G, B, F, Ab, E. So the arranger has to decide the best way to go from chord to chord while only using four of the five notes in each chord. (It usually means leaving out the root).

The only surviving member, I believe, is Bob Flanagan(seen playing bass in the early films......he was also a hell of a great trombonist too!)

Ross is still alive too! He was at the 2008 convention in Indiana.

Is Ross the guitarist whose brother was an original member? Did his brother die in a car accident
in the early 60s?
chenarch 2 years ago
Ross and Don are brothers. Ross is the drummer, and is still alive, Don is the guitarist and he was killed in a car accident in 1961.
