A lot of those volunteers came from Eastern Europe...which was being ravenged by both Stalin and Hitler so they chose, who can blame them. However, Western European volunteers had no excuse.

From what I know most of them were sent in the Waffen SS divisions defending Normandy.

okay,I think I see where you are coming from. A few ethnic German_Americans went to the German side. In the middle East there is a small example of Iraqi's with German support trying to free IRAQ from British colonialism. Curiously, Estonian's formed a full Waffen SS division in 1944, AFTER the Germans started losing in the east. Given the choice, dying for the Nazi's was a better choice than living under Stalin's communism. You realize what happend to Russian soldiers who didn't fight?

You might forget that Stalin was getting an army together at the German border to invade Germany. Therefore operation Babarossa was a defensive attack.
Without the European volunteers in the Waffen-SS and the German army the whole of europe would have been overrun by the USSR. If that would have happend there would not have been a wall in Berlin to fall and we would probably live in the USSR.

So true. Many say Operation: Barbarossa was a success becaue the Soviet defenses weren't prepared. The thing is, there was no Soviet defense. Their military was geared to attack on the offensive. Barbarossa just caught them off guard. If the Germans had waited, the Soviets would have overran Europe.
