@thecryptkicker5 PTB was written by someone who wants to tell us how lost he feels, how much he yearns to go home, to find a place to be. It starts on tonic, plays those couple of chords that assure us we know where we are, then starts singing - actually begins the song in the middle of verse, middle of Nowhere! Suddenly you have sensation of floating, falling, and now he will take you home over & over, returning to tonic, just to show you how good it feels, how much you want to go there, too.
Just a very good segment of writing. "strong in the sun I thought I'd see when day was done" is typical of people dismissing the fact of the loss of life, when they are still young enough to have something to lose. The definite closing "you" might as well be God. The dreams he probably did have that outshone ambition were echoes of those trurer worlds that really run ahead to us. There are no short cuts, the seed I plant that withers despite my best efforts, flowers on the path I pick up again.

Gee NIck - It's one thing to be selfishly obsessed with some girl but it's another to take us all down with you - get over it - The song was okay until you made it about her again.
Get over it !
In fact, I'm starting to detect a lot of your mothers melodic and harmonic devices in your music - I think I need to spend more time with her music.
Over rated- under rated- so weak in this need to over rate you.
@paindeer So. Surely we all cheat. He seems to be singing about not wanting to "get over it", because it means giving up something beyond words. What is stranger is not the people who do get it, but the others. Thank God not everything needs to be explained.
I think this is about Nick looking at the transition between him being happy and then becoming depressed and lonely, So sad. I know the feeling, One day ur stong in the sun then ur darker than the deepest sea.
people can compare music..but theres no point..nicks songs were are full of insight and depth..he obviously observed life and relationships very much..he clearly loved someone and never told them or got a chance to be with them, his songs come from raw emotion..they are so beautiful..he was indeed a unique person of incredible talent not just with guitar, but piano and songwriting, his voice is haunting, its a pity he was seclusive and reclusive, introverted and shy, deserved much more...rip.nick
@ramonfw I totally agree with you. Without his introverted self-reflection, his music wouldn't have been as powerful as it is, because he makes his limited words really mean something.
@nicklikedubstep it's actually one of his easier ones to play if you're in the right tuning, which is available all over youtube on covers of this song
its good to see so many people getting into him. at the time it was a minority of folk/rock fans like myself, but the whole media and music scene was different then. I would love to rewind time and hear Nick Drake sing live...or at least have exposure to his music long before he was no longer with us. The man was amazing...
@TheAmer117 No kidding... I've been trying to learn this song on guitar and while I find it is one of the easier songs, you really can't play it Nick did. For awhile I thought it was because it was one guitar was strumming and he played it over again but only with a bit of picking to bring those parts out but my gosh....
I'd like to think Nick could see this, see the internet age and the millions of people delighting in his music, feel the echo of the joy he's spread. That would be my wish for him.
Amusing, we often complain (and I believe rightfully so...) about the commercialization of music and specifically of its use in commercials. Yet, like others here, I "discovered" the man's music primarily through two different commercials, and for that, I'm grateful, as I've since listened to more music. I'd heard a song or two long ago, but not this beautiful gift... His music, mostly unappreciated in his day, is at least finding new listeners today...

@JosephCa64 I don't think it's that he didn't recognize the beauty of his own talent. I think he recognized it too much. There's a reason why people so artistically gifted tend to self-destruct; their gift comes at a terrible internal cost. They are forced to live with themselves on a daily basis. I can't imagine the torment; the ones that live to a ripe old age are few and far between. It's also not really clear that Nick Drake wanted to die. He just took antidepressants and went to sleep.
I'm still not sure how I found Nick. But isn't that the great point, its like you can never really pin point when you and your best friend became just that. Its a natural process.

This song was on the new criminal Minds, almost had a stroke! I hope every time i see something, it'll have a nick drake song. hopefully more people will be listening. Spread nick around, he deserved it!
The first time I heard this song it made me sit up in bed, amazed at what I was hearing. No song has ever done that to me before. This is probably my favourite piece of music of all time.
HELLO WOULD YOU MIND TAKING A LOOK AT MY VIDEOS? IF YOU LIKE ANY TYPE OF MUSIC, I WOULD BE HAPPY TO WORK WITH ANYONE BE IT ANY TIES WITH MUSIC OF ANY FORM FROM SINGERS TO PRODUCERS TO RAPPERS TO DANCERS TAKE A SECOND TO HEAR MY STUFF IM SURE YOU WILL LIKE IT THANKS!
I'm 14 and I consider myself lucky that I was brought up on such a great variety of music.
My childhood consisted of this, aphex twin, board of canada etc.
Only now am i starting to really appreciate it.
While all the kids in my school are listening to heartless pop music or thrash metal, i'm getting emotion fed to me by legendary artists such as nick drake :')
@somechrisguy hey man I agree with you about heartless pop music but try not to throw out Thrash Metal to quickly just because people are playing their guitars fast and hard dosent mean that their isint real emotion their. The lyrics to some metallica song can make you cry man. And some of Megadeath's song are as politically charged as protest folk song. Not every song is about death or sex. Listen to "Fade to Black" or "Master of puppets" then tell me that thrash is heartless.
@StringMaster94 I Dont mean to sound like a dick trying to argue over youtube. I just get passionate about music. and i think that its great that other people around my own age like the same music as me. I just found this song and i love it. Every style of music has good songs. keep on listening man
@somechrisguy The need some people feel to trash the musical taste of others and express their taste as the better one is something I can't quite understand.
@VincentPrice111 I commented on him and you are not cool because you accidentally were using my account as my backup account for the translations comments and a told that to somechrisguy I am subbing to you and I'm blocking you on this video.
@VincentPrice111 sorry I can't block you on this vid because this is not my vid. i meant i was gonna block you on your channel because you are a loser because when want to get on the computer you won't let me on right away. so get lost! all of my brothers are better than you and then mom you are stupid i forgive you for sending the love message.
@somechrisguy That's great dude! I had the same opinion at 14, however stuff changes, you'll get into everything here and there, you'll go through a thrash/metal phase too lol. seems unlikely but that's life.
@somechrisguy I'm fourteen too! I listen to varied music, because I've been brought up with a wide variety of music. I only started listening to Nick Drake a few days ago. I consider myself lucky to have heard such music as this, and to appreciate it.

The first time I heard this song it made me sit up in bed, amazed at what I was hearing. No song has ever done that to me before. This is probably my favourite piece of music of all time.

I almost desire my darkest hour, that's when his music is most beautiful.

@somechrisguy and also for THE INCREDIBLE STRING BAND. (Specially the album "the hangman´s beautiful daughter")

Nugwrangler 8 months ago
@VincentPrice111 sorry I can't block you on this vid because this is not my vid. i meant i was gonna block you on your channel because you are a loser because when want to get on the computer you won't let me on right away. so get lost! all of my brothers are better than you and then mom you are stupid i forgive you for sending the love message.
Nugwrangler 8 months ago
@somechrisguy That's great dude! I had the same opinion at 14, however stuff changes, you'll get into everything here and there, you'll go through a thrash/metal phase too lol. seems unlikely but that's life.

@somechrisguy I'm fourteen too! I listen to varied music, because I've been brought up with a wide variety of music. I only started listening to Nick Drake a few days ago. I consider myself lucky to have heard such music as this, and to appreciate it.
