I fucking Love this song, this song makes me hysterical man. I can't physically move in the way that my soul wants to dance in to this, but that man in the video can. Fucking awe-inspiring.
@mrjesta2010: You can buy it. It has been one of the few video commercially released by Killing Joke, and it's on the "Loose Cannon" DVD single. With some luck you could find it on eBay.
And I CHALLENGE you nay-sayers to do it. You can't. You're nothing more than armchair quarterbacks. You can't do a quarter of the moves before you injury yourselvses. So shut up with the "I can do that and make it better" crap. You can't.... you don't have the technical knowhow or the dance knowhow. Please stop playing like you do. You are the reason that the internet should not give a voice to everyone.
I still say this vid is badass! I don't even want to go into the amount of time it took to make it, get the practice down, etc.... This is a badass vid!
Maybe the video reflects what a Loose Cannon actually is, something unpredictable and can go off at any second. You have a dancer who on first look you'd think would do typical urban hip hop moves, but does this stranger mix up of body popping, tribal dancing, and there's even some mime in there. And the music is a down tempo heavy, almost industrial grind style (and there's not a similar track to it on the album). Who would have seen that coming other than the Joke? Just my opinion.
I would have to say I agree with you and I would like to add that Jaz is a fucking genius. He writes and sings about shit that most people probably would have never thought of. Cheers
I find the video hypnotic and original. And I don´t like it when you say "You have a dancer who on first look you'd think would do typical urban hip hop moves" Why? Because of him being black? Are you 14 years old?
@borgeision Based on current perceived stereotypes within the broad art form of a choreographed dance routine for music videos. Statistically choreographed dance in popular music today lies largely within the genre known as Urban which collectively contains R'n'B, Hip Hop etc.I believe Killing Joke are purposely touching on this stereotype in order to completely turn this perception on its head. Know many 14 year olds who would make such an interpretation? Or would you like to now imply ageism?
Yeah man, whatever, I didn´t give a shit about the dancer being black with jamaican dreadlocks. I don´t give a shit. I don´t give a sweat out of my balls. And I couldn´t care less about your complex grammar and your simple interpretation.
Personally I like the video. Its the first time I'd ever heard anything by Killing Joke and started an almost obsession with the band. For me I loved the fact you could hear this brutal voice but couldn't see the man who's voice it was.
just an opinion from where i'm sitting; i find this video somewhat difficult to watch. not because it's shit. but perhaps its supposed to make for uncomfortable viewing in reflection of the songs meaning. In that respect it's more effective and origional than showing video footage of war/famine. It's all down to people's perspective in the end; but it's far easier to look at something as being shit than to think about what it might represent, even something as "simplistic" as this.
Follow the leader was never an album.... just a tacky single. On the whole 'What's this for' was a great album (granted... i was mashed on evo-stick when i bought it).

@grtaabahyd Who has said this is racist? that is so stupid, I try not to read comments on here anymore, not good. I am a "loose cannon" and you hot the nail on the head mate.
He actually sings "this is the way, reprogram" so your ignorant comment doesn't hold any weight at all. Open your mind, put aside your prejudices and listen to the lyrics.
Also consider when the song was written, do you really think the write wrote this song ONLY to be watched with a video of a black person in it? I don't think so. The song makes no reference to race whatsoever, you are inventing these connections yourself.
for the same reason many rich parents in rich areas joined to Country Clubs have rich similar children, many poor parents in poor areas joined to gangs also have similar children. Rich high culture revolves around expencive things, morality, strict punishment and education. Poor culture revolves around violence, gang wars. Not to mention the massive hold this gang culture has on the media, young black people see that on TV and lyrics and soon aspire to be just like that, this is how it works.
...you claim rich culture revolves around morality, strict punishment and education... Are you fucking stupid? ENRON and as for strict punishment its quite the oppisite as they can buy their way out of any trouble they get into. Aswell education, i mean come on education is up to the induvidual. try going to a fucking a library and paying attention you can get the equivilant of a $100 000 college course minus the degree for 10cents in late fines
You've missed my point. that may be what some rich people end up doing and or what they are able to do, but that's not what publicized rich culture idolizes. I am also not saying that being rich makes people moral, just that for the most part, a rich suburb dweller probably will never need to knife someone in the gut to save them from killing him because they were from a gang that opposed him, where as it is significantly more likely that a very poor person in the ghetto would have to do that.
But seriously, you have a point. Still that's not what he was saying. I get my education on the internet. It's not what your knowledge says, it's what the degree says that matters.
I thought the meaning of the song and video was pretty obvious if you listen to the lyrics. The video suits the song perfectly, it's showing a man who is clearly in peak physical condition, strong and athletic. However he must live the way everyone has told him to, he must conform to what society expects him to be. But even with all these rules and expectations we are only human. discuss!
I agree completely. That's exactly the meaning of the song (and video).I mean, isn't it obvious?
Btw, the color of the man's skin has nothing to do with the meaning of the video.
Urban = that lives in a city.
Animal= a primitive being controlled by nothing but its instinct. Cannibals are similar to animals in this feature.
(to the ones who think this song is racist) if it's a racist song, why Jaz sings "I'm an urban animal"?That's nonsense! Or maybe you're claiming that Jaz Coleman is a negro???
Why did you link buttfucking with flowers, relationships and lovers? Obviously the lyrics are open to debate but it doesn't mean because a 'black' guy is in the video he is condemning blacks as the reason for our troubles. Everyone has the ability to snap and act like a savage brute, cannibal if you will. I'm sure if the lyrics were so obvious Coleman would have included the N word.
ashman is right i can see how your undeveloped mind robert finds racism in the lyrics of this song but that is just in your head.. do you really think that killing joke would release a racist song? thats a job for a WP band. and if im not wrong KJ is not a WP band. this song is about an urban animal, a person living in a city. and still being the animal that a human being is and always will be, all the technology in the world will not change that fact. we all are animals. and killing each other.
There's alot of talk about racism on here but I can't see it. What I do see however is people looking for racism. Racist interpretations are in your head, please leave them there.
My interpretation of this video is that it is a parody or comment on American music video and what it takes to have a hit. Joke looked at the hottest video on music television at the time which featured a buffed black R&B singer naked on the video (whose name I forget) and thought, "hey, we can do that!"
Love the song. The video isn't what I was expecting. The song always struck me as so angry, so threatening, so in your face. The video, is good though, just not what I expected.
u sir are an idiot. this song has nothing to do with race. its about social programing and the social peer presser that exist within all racial and cultural groups.
I agree the rate of crime among black people in america are higher than other ocial groups, thats because oppression is still rife within this 'civilised world'. Any group of people in the lower classes of society have higher rates of crime. Its true all over the world. Whites, blacks, asians; its not a racial thing its a class thing. Otherwise black people who have risen to prominent positions would still be holding guns and selling crack. Its a class thing not a race thing you racist idiot.
How about stereotypasaurus? I think calling someone a dinosaur is about as stupid as calling all black people 'beasts'.
A more fitting punishment for this particular xenophobe would be a forceful lowering of class. But of course that's unlikely to happen (how much lower can you get than racist redneck?), so we'll just have to wait for him to beat up a 'beast' and get thrown in jail.
Could it be say.....some random good person who is working his ass off and is stuck in urban/city dwellings and is about to snap or have a nervous breakdown due to the stress from everyday life?
Throw race and politics out of it and it could easily be just a human being wanting peace, quiet, and happiness.
Guess the words institutional racism have never registered with you. There's no way that the "commit 60% of the crime" can be a real figure, much crime goes unreported, more goes reported but no perp is found, so I'm guessing your stat is based upon recorded crime for which a conviction is made. DWB and similar "policies" help boost that 60% figure ...
Brandon... you are a total shithead. Even if that stat is true. You have to be completely ignorant to believe that that stat is due to their color of skin and not their economic conditions and the amount of educational suppression that blacks deal with even today. No matter what your race is, if you grow up in the inner cities, your chances are never good.
KJ have been around about thirty years because they are untainted by the machine. I cant see a commercial venture like Slipknot enjoying that kind of longevity, or relevance for that matter.
Slipknot isnt a 'commercial venture' common missconseption because they got alot of press coverage due to their look and their preformances, slipknot have been going for over 13 years and still going strong.
yeah like you'd said KJ havnt done anything to be more commercial. Both are good bands in their own way, one draws more attention to themselves than the other but that doesnt controll how long bands will keep going
The difference though, is that KJ have a sound that has remained virtually unchanged over many years and still sounds contemporary now.Slipknot on the other hand, are representative of the Zeitgeist, so it's a bit early to make a prediction on how long they can last before having to adapt or completely change the music or any gimmickry involved in the presentation.
That Killing Joke is still relevant now, that's a fact. But to say that their sound remained unchanged over the years, I seriously doubt it when I listen to What's THIS for!, Night Time, Pandemonium and Killing Joke 2003 in the same day...
And while I certainly dislike Slipknot for a number of reasons, compairing them to KJ is both pointless and...unfair. :)
Wait wait wait, sorry I'm not meaning to be a dick or anything, but as far as I was aware it wasn't just black people who lived in bad neighbourhoods and are poor there are plenty of poor asians, whites, Jews, Muslims and any other ethnicity or culture.
I'm not an American, so perhabs I'm wrong, but I heard that black people are majority in American poor districts like a Bronx. So I think: Urban = Street = Hip-Hop = Black Poeple.
I really do just love how quickly you stereotype people it's just fabulous. I'm not American either buddy, you don't need to be American to have common sense.
I guess you missed the point that "urban" is a euphemism for Black and that Africans are still cannibals today. Cases of cannibalism among African immigrants to Britain crop up from time to time.
If you just heard this song, and didnt see that it had a video whish was a young black guy dancing, you'd just think "he's talking about any man on the edge", and not for a moment would skin colour come up.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Then how else would they come up with the video? They tied the "scary black guy" video imagery with the content of the song lyrics. If you pay attention the dude in the video is actually lip-syncing to lyrics like "I'm an urban animal, one step from a cannibal." It's not like he's the singer, but the singer is speaking from the perspective of a black dude.
I agree with Germanicus. It's the song that is racist. It's pretty much a white guy warning white people that blacks are savages. I could see Killing Joke being a band that would envision a kind of Jungian archetype for blacks. It's not even thinly veiled, it's blatanly obvious, and if I was black, I would be offended.
Thats just stretching it really thin. Jaz Coleman has never shown any traits of being a racist type. If he was being racist then why use the words to describe himself? If he had a history of using Blacks in videos to describe a savage nature then maybe I could see where you're coming from. But the director of the video probably had much more control on the direction of the video than KJ did. I'm not saying racism isn't alive and well. But this video is not a good example of racism at all.
@balfordazzling i agree w/you, esp. because Jaz has said he faced alot of racism himself as a child, was beaten and called paki cause he's part Indian.
but i love the song and think the video is very interesting. it seems more fitting with the song than id initially have thought and the contortionist is awesome.
This song is brutal - I love the video - totally put's accross the feel of the song in a Jacob's Ladder kind of way. There are problems in our society which KJ confront in their music head on and in an intelligent way.
I listend to this in my bath last night with a bottle of newcastle brown ale and a roll up, on my walkkman, It was absolutly fantastic. I recomend listening to kj in a tiled bathroom the sound is fucking unreal.

ok all of your comments are.. original.. but..why dont you just fucken listen to the music.. this shit aint about no racist dawg.. good music

KevinLounsberry 3 years ago
...you claim rich culture revolves around morality, strict punishment and education...
Pako007son 2 years ago
You've missed my point. that may be what some rich people end up doing and or what they are able to do, but that's not what publicized rich culture idolizes. I am also not saying that being rich makes people moral, just that for the most part, a rich suburb dweller probably will never need to knife someone in the gut to save them from killing him because they were from a gang that opposed him, where as it is significantly more likely that a very poor person in the ghetto would have to do that.
KevinLounsberry 2 years ago
Nice way to quote Good Will Hunting
But seriously, you have a point. Still that's not what he was saying. I get my education on the internet. It's not what your knowledge says, it's what the degree says that matters.
blackfireINSANITY 2 years ago
Indeed!~ As the wise Frank Zappa said:
If you want to get laid, go to college. If you want an education, go to the library.

I thought the meaning of the song and video was pretty obvious if you listen to the lyrics. The video suits the song perfectly, it's showing a man who is clearly in peak physical condition, strong and athletic. However he must live the way everyone has told him to, he must conform to what society expects him to be. But even with all these rules and expectations we are only human. discuss!
lucifersatanus 3 years ago 2
I agree completely. That's exactly the meaning of the song (and video).I mean, isn't it obvious?
Btw, the color of the man's skin has nothing to do with the meaning of the video.
Urban = that lives in a city.
Animal= a primitive being controlled by nothing but its instinct. Cannibals are similar to animals in this feature.
(to the ones who think this song is racist) if it's a racist song, why Jaz sings "I'm an urban animal"?That's nonsense! Or maybe you're claiming that Jaz Coleman is a negro???
ducadimantova91 3 years ago
Why did you link buttfucking with flowers, relationships and lovers? Obviously the lyrics are open to debate but it doesn't mean because a 'black' guy is in the video he is condemning blacks as the reason for our troubles. Everyone has the ability to snap and act like a savage brute, cannibal if you will. I'm sure if the lyrics were so obvious Coleman would have included the N word.
Ashmanmurray 3 years ago
ashman is right i can see how your undeveloped mind robert finds racism in the lyrics of this song but that is just in your head.. do you really think that killing joke would release a racist song? thats a job for a WP band. and if im not wrong KJ is not a WP band. this song is about an urban animal, a person living in a city. and still being the animal that a human being is and always will be, all the technology in the world will not change that fact. we all are animals. and killing each other.
baba1979 3 years ago
There's alot of talk about racism on here but I can't see it. What I do see however is people looking for racism. Racist interpretations are in your head, please leave them there.

i agree. good song, but the video gets boring after a minute or two
opensourcethong 3 years ago
My interpretation of this video is that it is a parody or comment on American music video and what it takes to have a hit. Joke looked at the hottest video on music television at the time which featured a buffed black R&B singer naked on the video (whose name I forget) and thought, "hey, we can do that!"
But that's just my interpretation.
anduandirobot 3 years ago
Love the song. The video isn't what I was expecting. The song always struck me as so angry, so threatening, so in your face. The video, is good though, just not what I expected.

As a civilized nation we tend avoid dishing out on people what we wouldn't want done to ourselves.
I'm going to assume that you're a right wing redneck and use your own book of fables against you: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

u sir are an idiot. this song has nothing to do with race. its about social programing and the social peer presser that exist within all racial and cultural groups.
you are the definition of ignorant!
cottoneyejoe098 3 years ago 2
I agree the rate of crime among black people in america are higher than other ocial groups, thats because oppression is still rife within this 'civilised world'. Any group of people in the lower classes of society have higher rates of crime. Its true all over the world. Whites, blacks, asians; its not a racial thing its a class thing. Otherwise black people who have risen to prominent positions would still be holding guns and selling crack. Its a class thing not a race thing you racist idiot.

Maurypovichisafaggot 3 years ago

Good song...
m9acedriver 3 years ago
Brandon... you are a total shithead. Even if that stat is true. You have to be completely ignorant to believe that that stat is due to their color of skin and not their economic conditions and the amount of educational suppression that blacks deal with even today. No matter what your race is, if you grow up in the inner cities, your chances are never good.

24,921 Views man THAT'S JUST WRONG ...whats wrong with peoples music tastes these days ...millions views on crap like Slipknot ...sad.
TheHeadHunter824 3 years ago
tis because more people have heard of slipknot than killing joke,
dont get me wrong, i like both bands, but i guess you'd agree that killing joke dont get enough coverage on music channels and stuf//
unknownsixsixsix 3 years ago 2
KJ have been around about thirty years because they are untainted by the machine. I cant see a commercial venture like Slipknot enjoying that kind of longevity, or relevance for that matter.
PunkRotter69 3 years ago 3
Slipknot isnt a 'commercial venture' common missconseption because they got alot of press coverage due to their look and their preformances, slipknot have been going for over 13 years and still going strong.
yeah like you'd said KJ havnt done anything to be more commercial. Both are good bands in their own way, one draws more attention to themselves than the other but that doesnt controll how long bands will keep going
unknownsixsixsix 3 years ago 4
The difference though, is that KJ have a sound that has remained virtually unchanged over many years and still sounds contemporary now.Slipknot on the other hand, are representative of the Zeitgeist, so it's a bit early to make a prediction on how long they can last before having to adapt or completely change the music or any gimmickry involved in the presentation.
PunkRotter69 3 years ago
That Killing Joke is still relevant now, that's a fact. But to say that their sound remained unchanged over the years, I seriously doubt it when I listen to What's THIS for!, Night Time, Pandemonium and Killing Joke 2003 in the same day...
And while I certainly dislike Slipknot for a number of reasons, compairing them to KJ is both pointless and...unfair. :)

Ang3l1zer 3 years ago
Wait wait wait, sorry I'm not meaning to be a dick or anything, but as far as I was aware it wasn't just black people who lived in bad neighbourhoods and are poor there are plenty of poor asians, whites, Jews, Muslims and any other ethnicity or culture.
thosegaysailors 3 years ago
I'm not an American, so perhabs I'm wrong, but I heard that black people are majority in American poor districts like a Bronx. So I think: Urban = Street = Hip-Hop = Black Poeple.
Ang3l1zer 3 years ago
I really do just love how quickly you stereotype people it's just fabulous. I'm not American either buddy, you don't need to be American to have common sense.
thosegaysailors 3 years ago
Urban has been a euphemism for black for awhile.

vicha777 3 years ago
I guess you missed the point that "urban" is a euphemism for Black and that Africans are still cannibals today. Cases of cannibalism among African immigrants to Britain crop up from time to time.
Germanicus666 3 years ago
If you just heard this song, and didnt see that it had a video whish was a young black guy dancing, you'd just think "he's talking about any man on the edge", and not for a moment would skin colour come up.
Nothing racist about it. Move on
Jehfur 3 years ago 2
This comment has received too many negative votes show
Then how else would they come up with the video? They tied the "scary black guy" video imagery with the content of the song lyrics. If you pay attention the dude in the video is actually lip-syncing to lyrics like "I'm an urban animal, one step from a cannibal." It's not like he's the singer, but the singer is speaking from the perspective of a black dude.
einsatzdeath 3 years ago
I agree with Germanicus. It's the song that is racist. It's pretty much a white guy warning white people that blacks are savages. I could see Killing Joke being a band that would envision a kind of Jungian archetype for blacks. It's not even thinly veiled, it's blatanly obvious, and if I was black, I would be offended.
einsatzdeath 3 years ago
The song seems much more enjoyable when you describe it that way.

Sashphoenix 3 years ago 4
Thats just stretching it really thin. Jaz Coleman has never shown any traits of being a racist type. If he was being racist then why use the words to describe himself? If he had a history of using Blacks in videos to describe a savage nature then maybe I could see where you're coming from. But the director of the video probably had much more control on the direction of the video than KJ did. I'm not saying racism isn't alive and well. But this video is not a good example of racism at all.
balfordazzling 3 years ago 3
@balfordazzling i agree w/you, esp. because Jaz has said he faced alot of racism himself as a child, was beaten and called paki cause he's part Indian.
but i love the song and think the video is very interesting. it seems more fitting with the song than id initially have thought and the contortionist is awesome.

This song is brutal - I love the video - totally put's accross the feel of the song in a Jacob's Ladder kind of way. There are problems in our society which KJ confront in their music head on and in an intelligent way.
