Anyone who denies Moon is one of the greatest rock drummers who's ever lived, clearly never sat behind a drum kit. His technique is incomparable, his speed and dexterity supernatural, and he combines it with explosive showmanship, making him a centerpiece of the band rather than taking the back seat as most drummers do. Sure, John Bonham is amazing, but a dedicated drummer can copy his grooves and fills. With Moon, even most veteran drummers have no chance of pulling of a decent imitation.
@LaurensDogg Although my knowledge of drumming is nil..I would fell that Bonham is a more classic drummer (Like Ginger Baker perhaps) But Moonie is just the best natural drummer) Sorry WAS the best..Just my opinion!!
I never understood the hype about this guy? A good drummer, yes. The best, not by a long shot! People confuse his drumming skills with his wild and fun personality. With any time off he would get sloppy. As far as skills Moon would always require ample time to regain what skills he did have before every recording or tour. He was notorious for this!
@MrTomahawk65 most people, with time off get rusty, regardless of whether they are a musician, surgeon, plumber etc...ya gotta keep your chops up.....as for moon being the best....he may not have been the best technician, but he was a great great drummer...most of the time..
Keith actually changed the way drummers played for a rock band. Buddy Rich a stuck up prick? I think not. I met him when I was 16 at a side gig he did at my high school's 3000 seat gym back in 1980. Very classy, polite, and one hell of a drummer.
Listen to the who without Keith, just not the same. "The whole is greater than sum of its parts", Pete is the driving force of the Who no doubt about it but if you take Keith then John out of the equation the band is just not as good. Did Pete think Keith was a sloppy drummer, don't think so.
@demoballa , if you think flash & noise is great drummimg then maybe he's your man
Townsend was the heart, soul and backbone of the band, a great showman too but was also a great really solid player who basically held the band together when that is the drummers job IMHO.
if you are insulted then I apologize, no need to get offensive.
@SuperStig23 keith could at times be noisey...but most of the time he played incredible drums...listen to some of the isolated drum parts here on u tube of some great Who songs
What is all this "..oh Keith's pretty good but he's not the best" nonsense about? On any instrument, there are quite a few musicians who are very talented, less who are gifted, even less who are virtuoso, and there are very few who literally channel music through their instruments with such ease and innovation that people say "they are born to it". As natural as Hendrix on guitar, so Keith was on the drums. Were they the "best"? Who can say, both died so young, their potential was never realized
Keith is technically not the greatest drummer in the world, but if you look at the drummers of the time, Keith was totally insane and unlike any other drummer. If you add to this his crazy day to day behavior i.e T.V|'s out the window, rolls in the swimming pool. This is what makes Keith so different and ultimately memorable characters of all time. Personally I have enjoyed The Who and most of all Keith since I was 11 (I'm 40 now ),can you honestly say Neil Pearl is so liked and remembered
Moon's playing propelled Townshend's writing very well and filled out the sound of what was essentially a power trio, (with a singer) when performing live. If you think about Bonham and how so much of what he played can be lifted and used in various contexts, from grooves to "licks", (and by this I mean those great, immediately identifiable fills he spun out) it's apparent to me that Moon's stuff was more about interaction with The Who uniquely. Think Davey Tough vs. Buddy Rich.
I'm very open to changing my mind and will take back my statement if you could simpley point me to something that substantiates claims that he's so great. I haven't heard it yet and I've listened to many songs with him drumming. Point to something other than other people saying he's great. To say I have no idea what he's doing is wrong. I grew up playing and I follow many good/great drummers. I'm not too big to admit when I'm wrong...please point it out to me and I'll gladly do so.
Keith Moon is ridiculously great. These guys who say he's "average" have no idea what he's doing and would be hard pressed to do the same. Buddy, Gene, Joe are also ridiculously great. Different types of music require different types of drumming. Sure Buddy had the most technique of anyone EVER, but neither of them could do what the other did. Keith Moon sounds like no one else and that's what makes any musician great. The fact that you hear their own individual voice.
@jpmfresno moon was not average. He was an awesome drummer,,,most of the time..There were times when he stunk up the joint. If Neal Peart and Portnoy rave about him, he had to be good. Just listen to live at leeds, wont get fooled again.etc. He was the perfect fit for the Who....
@alsaxe1 once again...please point me to some material that shows this "greatness". I do agree that he was a great fit for the Who and their style...but I don't see him as the second coming.
@jpmfresno ok...listen intently to the studio version of Wont get fooled again..listen to the entire Live at leeds album. He does some great double kick work. Listen to Amazing journey/sparks...he is on top of his game. keith had trouble w/6/8 time though. Ask Neil Peart or Mike portnoy about keith. They both slate him as a major influence...If after listening to the above pieces of music and you still aren't convinced..then there is no hope for u...lol..
@JoeBrasso Neil Pert was great in his time. Listen to Exit Stage Left recordings. That was at a time when no one really drummed like that and it was very good stuff....no effects :-)
ok now listen here all of ya??? go listen to the rock group iron butterfly, inna gadda davita, this was and still is the greates drum solo ever made no doubts really i am not joking!! those of you that love a totally intense mind gripping drum solo have to check out this video, do it, you will not be ashamed!!!
@MrJeepsters Buddy Rich was a Jazz drummer from the big band days. All though totaly different style then Moon, and Moon was an awesum Drummer and a drummer I grew up with and learned from along with Baker, apice ect. Rich was a drummers drummer and Idolized by many including Neil Pert.Do a youtube search and check him out,I think you will like him. Also check out Gene Krupa.
@psychodamned ....Saw Buddy Rich on a couple Tonight Shows with Johnny Carson. The dude is hopped up on Dexies, is a stuck up prick and THEN let's you have the privilege of watching him over-perform. Sloppy speed drummer that makes no sense. Jazz Baby, Jazz
It's actually not a question. The comment is "He (Keith Moon) made recognize the drummer as an essential musician of a band. From a musical point of view, The Who could never recover from his passing."
@imme754 Amen! Lets not even put Moon in the same sentence. I'm not a Moon hater...I like some of his drumming alot...he's just not as good as people make him out to be.
Keith Moon, like Mitch Mitchell and John Bonham, was great in the fact that with a basic unit of guitar, bass and drums, he knew how to fill up the sound. When there is a second guitar or keyboard, the sound is fuller. With just a three piece band, a great drummer will play not only the beat, but, will also play more melodic and fill the empty spots. Moon and the other aforementioned drummers did this so well...
