Not a fan of phased strings on Oxygene 2, the one handed playing technique of the main leads or any delay used on those leads. Everything else is super
Stunning cover! But what are the notes on that very fast part? I hope you know which part I mean, it starts from 1:53. I'm trying to learn that part, but I don't find any videos where I can see that very fast combination of these notes... :(
hello. i would like to know how you sync the sounds modulations with the score of the song ? Are the modulations based on a fixed time or are they following your live performance ?
Dude congratulations, it sounds beautiful and really hard to distinguish with original jarre's version if you don't have it near to make a comparison.
More than days, less than months. :o) Most of the sounds were made as I came to that part of the song, and adjustments and fine tuning of them took place as needed during the process of recording separate parts. So I have no idea how much time I spent on creating them as they are in this video.
But I think I spent more time rehearsing that main lead line. ;-)
@qasion The Korg M3 is the music synthesizer I play (the bottom keyboard). The keyboard on the top is a Korg Radias.
In addition to being a synth, the M3 contains a musical sequencer that allows me to record parts that I can't play live (due to a lack of hands) and send note signals to the M3's own tone generator or to the Radias.
Did you ever release info on some of the FX sounds used in the track? They sound like an LFO modulating a filter cutoff, then the rate of the LFO being adjusted.
If you would be prepared to share some of the details I would be really interested in learning more.
The effect is quite simple. On the Radias, I set up V. Patch 1 so that the modulation wheel controls LFO1's rate, and V. Patch 2 so that LFO1 controls the pitch of the sound.
The sound is a simple single-oscillator triangle wave. The pitch modulation by the LFO is constant - the only thing being varied is the LFO rate. A lowpass filter (fixed frequency, no keytrack) is added to soften the sound.
There are no user samples (by me) in this song. Some of the sounds are based on the internal (ROM) samples in the M3.
But most of the sounds (including the wind swoosh and the background effects) are synthesized on the Korg Radias virtual analog synth as well as on the Radias expansion board in the M3. And some sounds (including both main lead sounds) are synthesized using the M3's internal sample-based PCM synthesis.
Oh, wow, maybe I should work for Korg instead of my software developer company, hehe. ;-) Good luck with your M3 and Radias. The Radias has been criticized for "dull" and "boring" sounds (and indeed most of the presets are), but once you get to program this little beast it has some very nice sounds in it.
Ah, yes, I believe he did say something like that. Oh, well, i DID get a little mention on his blog back in 2008 (my Equinoxe 7 video), so I'm quite happy with that.
Ha ha, no, the Radias is very exciting!! :-) I don't agree with those who said it was boring at all. And now that new official and un-official soundsets have been released it's a monster!
BTW, I've really enjoyed watching some of your videos, both the laser harp and your other projects and experiments.
Unfortunately there is no way to convert data between the RADIAS and EXB-RADIAS, other than manually going through the parameters (e.g. in the software editors).
I believe this is due to the structural differences between the two (a RADIAS program has 4 timbres and different effect structures, an EXB-RADIAS is a single timbre, but you can use 4 such programs in sequences and combis on the M3).
I don't usually like cover versions, after listening to many really bad attempts, they get frustrating! This however, is really good, it's nearly as lavish as jarres' original. Congratulations!
Just note that even though the 73- or 88-key versions of M3 can accomodate a Radias Rack into the keybed, there's no real integration there. You can plug both into the keybed, which means both will sound simultaneously when you play, or you can connect them via MIDI cables. The still are two separate synths with separate audio outputs, so even though it looks very cool to have them on the same keybed, they are still separate units.
Of course I don't know your needs or what gear you have, but I'd go for the Radias with the 49-key keybed. You can still detach it from the keybed and use only the rack, but it can be nice to have its own set of keys sometimes, and I don't know if keybed only for the Radias is available.
He he, thank you. I do have playback in the sense that the backing tracks are pre-recorded in the sequencer (don't have hands enough to play all those parts he he).
However the lead is not fake. It's really played live when I recorded the video. I do however admit that I didn't nail it on the first take. ;-)
your video was one of the reasons I bought the KORG M3. I've just posted a version of 'The Chauffeur' I recorded last night as a thank you ~ it's an amazing machine and I'm loving it!
hey men are you amazing, tu digitacion es perfecta en la parte medular de OXIGENE 2 (terrific right hand) i hope more amazing covers from you of JEAN MICHEL JARRE.
Less attack on the strings next time, please! But seriously, I can't believe you learned and played that right hand stuff perfectly. Congrats, it is amazing how long ago and with what machines Jarre was able to do this. But then his dad is filthy rich (Maurice Jarre)!
No. There are factory presets in there, but the majority of the sound is from sounds I've created myself on the M3, the M3's Radias expansion board, and the standalone Radias.
Sorry, my German is not very good... But if you're asking if it is playback, the answer is that the backing tracks are played back by the sequencer in the M3 synthesizer, but the lead parts are all played live while I recorded the video.
All the parts that look like I'm playing them, are real playing. So there's no miming or pretending to play if that's what you're asking. :-)
It's not really that hard to play once you learn it. The hard part is learning it, note by note to the point where you know which note to play next in the sequence.
But the fingers themselves don't really move that fast. :-)
really awesome guy... I like jmj too much and i will go to see the oxygene tour in Rome on 5th november...I'm so excite...really good job guy...go on and on :)
what are you talking about? The oxygene tour is finished , Jarres last consert was given in Zurich in may dude, me myself was at the stockholm concert
This is better than the original I think. I think the original was a little less clean than this and the leads were weaker. The rhythms are tighter too. Good Job!
Very nice! I think that sounds more like the original than either the concert versions I've heard, or the recent "Oxygene Live In Your Living Room", and they used an entire room full of equipment. I look forward to hearing more!
Dude, you are seriously talented. Both this and the Equinoxe cover are fantastic, especially playing the chorus notes with one hand...impressive. Excellent stuff!!
Indeed an excellent work...HE should start wondering...lol...But playing music that is already writen?I for one, would like to hear you work...Not that this is not perfect...But as always its somebody's else....With interest i would like to hear your own music as i know the other members would like to...Give us your best :-)
I am using the Radias board in the M3 as well as the "vanilla" EDS sounds and the standalone Radias synth.
Up to 1:50 into the video, all the sound you hear comes from 8 timbres of pure Radias joy (Radias and EXB-Radias).
But both main lead parts that are played on the M3's keyboard are not Radias, but could easily be programmed on a Radias. Also, most of the drums are "vanilla" (even preset) drums on the M3.
The Radias is great sounding and fun to program. :-)

Didn't Jarre say something about rewarding the best 3 videos for "something special". I'm glad that he's watching all this stuff we do.
I'm quite chuffed that maybe (just maybe) he watched me play the laser harp, instead of the other way round.
Don't go telling me that the RADIAS is boring now that I got all excited about it :-)

TruenotesMusic 2 years ago
I think so, yes. :-)
Of course you could get (or maybe you have it already) the EXB-Radias expansion, and it is definitely worth the money.
But I also think the Radias rack is even better because of all the knobs. Creating sounds on the Radias rack is fun! :-)
rfoshaug 2 years ago
Thanks.
I own a 61 key though. So is the EXB-radias able to produce the same sounds as the rack?
I would think that the actual Radias rack has more features.
