I love how they use parts of this track in the Smallville episode Rosetta, where Tom Welling meets Chris Reeve, fantastic scene, almost as good as the music itself.
Live as one of them, Kal-El, to discover where your strength and your power are needed. Always hold in your heart the pride of your special heritage. They can be a great people, Kal-El, they wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way. For this reason above all, their capacity for good, I have sent them you... my only son.
"Your name is Kal-El. You are the only survivor of the planet Krypton. Even though you've been raised as a human, you are not one of them. You have great powers, only some of which you have as yet discovered."
@Mathew1985AZ I beg to differ. I listened to the section in Saturn of which you speak, and yes, it involves flutes forming chords which move stepwise chromatically to create an eerie melody. However, it is not the same melody, and they are not the same chords. Nor is the speed, or the emotion conveyed the same. Yes, they are both mysterious and haunting, yet in the "Fortress of Solitude", the music is egging you on, leading towards the next section. In "Saturn", it is a somber funeral march.
@TheInspirationExpert Moreover, to call an artist unoriginal because he uses a similar technique as another is unfair criticism. I'm sure many composers have used this device to convey eeriness in music. However, I don't deny that there are instances in "Star Wars" in which Williams lifts from other composers. I've noticed them myself. But to call him unoriginal for that, and to forget his other works, is also unfair. He music has a very distinctive voice - and you hear it, if you listen.
@TheInspirationExpert I should probably make myself clearer. He IS being unoriginal when he lifts from other composers, but as a composer overall, (his style, moods, character, voice) I think he's very original. That's really the only point I'm trying to make through all this blathering. :)
@GalacticKnight Very true. And when you look at it that way, how original were any of the great composers? Or any great creative artist? It is something to think about.
when i was a kid when this movie originally came out , my mom bought this record. it was a really good soundtrack, although i used to play alot, the track where margot kidder as lois spoke the can you read my mind poem to john williams ' music.
I mean, you just have to worship this guy, John Williams... such elegance, such a delicate touch, such beauty - but also able to compose a triumphant overture score such as the main theme of Superman, in the beginning of the movie.
I think the best part of this starts at 5:08. Very serene.
