I've tried software based synth/keyboard/drum programs, & I have keyboards & sound modules. IMO, nothing beats a "dedicated" keyboard/module, that was designed/built for the sole purposes of making music. As opposed to PC, that can "also" do music. I have Roland, Korg & Yamaha "flagship" models. IMO, Korg has better "synth" sounds, Roland has better "acoustic" sounds & Yamaha has a decent/even blend of both. If price is an issue, I would recommend a used Korg Triton or Yamaha Motif 6.
