Such wisdom. Mars Volta are part of a movement that is ambitious and truly progressive. Concept-driven albums, complex instrumentation, thoughtful enigmatic lyrics, and immaculately textured and layered. They are doing it, Opeth, Porcupine Tree, and Mastodon are doing it. We live in a golden age where the underground movement is erupting into our mainstream and blowing our minds into outer space. Hallelujah!

how does opeth make that list? Mars Volta is so much more truly progressive. I really feel there's a very big line between "prog" and truly progressive music. because prog hit a dead end as far as doing anything truly new at least ten years ago.

@Harken22 Opeth is forward thinking progressive metal. Their compositions speak for themselves. I'm not trying to pit Mars Volta against Opeth, but they do come from a similar source.
