The funny thing is, the individual mandate that Republicans rail against when it comes to Obamacare is bullshit. The provision itself was proposed and added into the legislation by Republican Orin Hatch. Republicans were the originators of this idea which dates back to the Nixon Administration. So for 35 years Republicans supported individual mandates until you know who decided he like the idea too lol!
Obamacare was signed on March 2010 with 59% of the people disapproving according to a CNN poll. The CBO scored Obamacare on six years of coverage for 10 years of taxes, which is how the CBO showed the bill to be deficit neutral . Mitt Romney is not the front runner candidate for President.
That would be Ron Paul who has been doing more with less than any presidential candidate.
Ron Paul is the true doctor of limited government, fiscal responsibility, sound money, liberty, and a non-interventionist foreign policy.
One opposite of that which has won the hatred of the Muslim world ten times over, in the last decade and wreaked havoc on so many American soldiers and families
Dr. Donald Berwick, the man who will run your health care: "I cannot believe that the individual health care consumer can enforce through choice the proper configurations of a system as massive and complex as health care. That is for leaders to do. ... About 8% of GDP is plenty for 'best known' care. ... A progressive policy regime will control and rationalize financing—control supply."
@PaulWiele True, also you can support mindless warmongering without being a socialist, granted it was originally the socialists who believed in crusading all over the damm planet to spread their "message".
Politically I lean left. I always wonder if that's why much of the discussion and messaging I see from the right recently seems hyberbolic and a little nutty.
Now, I realize, no. Because THIS video is sane and rational. It speaks from the right, but is thoughtful and respectful. Let it serve as an example of how we can discuss this stuff and have a perspective without the exchange sliding to dubious talking points and name-calling.
@benpatrickjohnson Agreed. I am an Obama supporter, but I respect people who can make sane arguments rather than comparing Obama to Hitler. I do like a lot of conservative/libertarian ideas, but I am often turned off by the spokespeople for those ideas. I also like to see Romney called out on his hypocrisy.
@Dakej not trying to be a dick but that doesn't make any sense. You cant be an Obama supporter and claim to have libertarian beliefs. His policies and those beliefs are exact opposites its impossible; your just lying. also your turned off by the spokespeople of libertarian beliefs? The spokespeople for them speak for those ideas... if you mean the few tea par-tiers with the hitler signs; every rally in the world has them so really you cant support Obama either.
@fisharecoming Actually, libertarians and liberals agree on a lot of social issues at the moment. The War on Drugs and gay marriage are two examples. They are not exact opposites. Republicans side with libertarians on economic issues, whereas liberals are more like libertarians when it comes to social issues. So I'm not lying, thanks very much.
@fisharecoming Not to mention, I disagree with some of the things Obama does. I'm sympathetic to libertarian ideas, but I don't think they can be overly idealistic about human nature.
@SuperMegaUltraLaser : way to go for the ad hominem attack rather than have any rational ideas. exactly the bonehead response i've come expect from the sheeple.
@rationalCrash It wasn't an ad hominem it was a simple and accurate description. Sometimes you gotta call a cigar a cigar. He spouts off about his weird ass plans than have no chance of ever working anywhere outside of his own head. Kook is an apt description.
The most fundamental question of all: What is the underlying law of nature.
As the way of all things, what effect do you suppose its question, knowledge, understanding and application by billions of persons would have on the state of global economics, science, the humanities, education, government and business?
@Zooksboardshop I totally agree with you. It's very important to have vigorous debate in this country, but not character assasination. When I see signs like Obama being shown as hitler, that does nothing for our conversations. Keep to the issues.
@Zooksboardshop If you like Ron Paul you might like Libertarian leaning Jim Demint of S.C. or Cornyn of Texas, Tom Coburn of Oklahoma. I also like Conservitive Paul Ryan and Jason Chaffetz. There are some unknowns that may come up in the next couple of years. Right now we need to get them elected to congress 2010 that is Rand Paul in Kentucky, Peter Schiff in Conn and Bob Hedlund in Mass.
@quizerry I wish all politicians could be like Peter Schiff and tell us there view on everything on youtube. Peter Schiff is pretty awesome for doing that.
@Zooksboardshop, Ron Paul does have a chance. A recent Rasmussen poll concerning a theoretical election put him dead even with, guess who... Obama. So, the real question is why do The Powers That Be want to prevent Ron Paul from having a shot? The American people like him just fine, but they don't rule their own country any longer.
Yes! Ron Paul please. If not him, I'll vote Libertarian, whether my vote is wasted or not. I'm tired of the GOP selling themselves as small government when they are all about the big spending.
Oh and nice little snipe on the heritage foundation there Cato. The Heritage Foundation actually pays for travel arrangements and a real hotel room when they invite someone to Washington D.C. Don't compare CATO to the Heritage Foundation, that's like saying that Jimmy Carter was almost as good as Teddy Roosevelt, yes they were both Democrats, yet one sucked and one was a great president!
Yes Romney's Massachusetts health care plan is similar to Obama's plan, It's a healthcare plan, there's a lot of things that are bound to be similar. If you actually listen to what Romney says about it though, it's not so much what the plan is, it's more about the execution. His plan worked for his state, he didn't make conservative tax payers in Idaho pay for abortions in California! His whole point is that, yes healthcare needs to be reformed, but on a state level.
@lorenzschuerch How do you know it's working. Are you from MA? Furthermore, if it is working and it's similar to Obamacare, why is Romney against it? Sounds like politics, which in english means LIES!
@MamoDad -- ROMNEY'S 2012 PLAN CUTS MEDICARE--Ron Paul’s plan cuts $1 trillion the first year and balances the budget in 3 years. The plan cuts by ending the costly unconstitutional foreign wars, and cuts foreign welfare, corporate welfare, and overgrown federal bureaucracy. These cuts doe not affect those who are dependent on domestic spending programs such as Medicare. Romney’s plan cuts Medicare, on which many elderly Americans rely.
I agree that Romney is wrong to call insurance mandates conservative, but the real question is what is Romney for when it comes to national health care policies. Is Romney for mandated insurance nationwide? If so, then I have a problem.
The fact that the MA plan is a state plan makes for a significant difference from any national plan. I guess Cato could make a video stating that Romney wants to dig an expensive tunnel under most of the US. We know because of the big dig in Boston.
Furthermore, Republicans who run on an anti-health care platform are doomed in 2012. The powerful, private insurance companies just got a slew of new customers and a huge source of new revenue. They are happy as clams. This cry for "repeal" will go away by 2012.
This little clip is pretty disingenuous, ignoring the reality of our country and its people.
Obama started out wanting a single-payer system. The inverse happened to Romney. Romney wanted a free market system, his liberal state demanded single-payer, and they compromised with an individual mandate and private, subsizided health insurance.
Obama wanted single-payer and was able to be talked down to an individual mandate and a private, subsidized insurance.
@SchnappM Actually it looks like I might be wrong. Either way a single payer system was never actually in the cards, and an individual mandate with insurance exchanges is certainly an ideologically centrist compromise of an idea that should've gotten bipartisan support
I hope this means that Romney is done. We do not need him on the ballot either in the primaries or in the general in 2012. Romneycare and Romney will be a drag on the ticket. We need a true conservative who can cut spending and find true healthcare reform. Romney will just give us 4 more years of Obama.
Romney is a wolf in sheep's clothing. Anyone that believes in government controlled health care, whether state or federally controlled, is an enemy of freedom.
