just tried out king's field... not sure if it's the controls (which are pretty bad tbh) or the difficulty, but im finding it way harder than demon's/dark souls. and i thought dark souls was one of the hardest games i've played...
I used to play this game, but then I took an arrow to the knee.
But seriously, I loved this game. Beat it, then played and beat the next King's Field. Looking at this video is painful, because of how terrible the graphics seem now, but it was cutting edge back in the day.
One thing I've noticed while playing this game is a lot of the value you will find in a weapon is it's behavior based on speed (as in stamina recovery rate).
Its good to keep daggers, as they are one of the fastest weapons in King's Field.
The thing that made King's Field stand out amongst the RPGs during the PSOne era was it's stat increases by repetition. If you attack your enemies enough times, your Strength stat increased by 1.
I remember the lighthouse, me and my friend derek, 14 or so, stoned to all hell, jumped off that thing repeatedly for no reason and tripped out on what was then top notch graphics :)
@TheEverskye This game came around 1994 two years after Alone in the Dark for PC which was released 1992 (the Playstation didn't have joysticks yet).
When Alone in the Dark came out, 3D was very new, so a lot of conventions used in later games didn't exist yet. Developers were still getting the feel for making a 3D game.
@thedragonb0y Ah that makes sense, thanks for the info. I do give the 3D devs props for inventing this technology in the first place, amazing that you can give "3D" image representation on a flat computer screen.
@TheEverskye Been doing it since the 1970's with games like Maze War or 3D Monster Maze by using Map & Compass logic along with images representing the world.
The first ever 3D game that I know of was Battlezone in the early 80's when they added a 3rd axis (x, y, and z) in which the player can navigate in a 3D world.
For the time, the idea of being able to move around at eye level as if you were physically looking through a window to a virtual world, was quite amazing.
Damn... Looking at Demon's Souls and now Dark Souls really puts into perspective how far videogames have come. I really like how From Software has always focused on making games for the core gamer. Even though King's Field games weren't the best, I still had a lot of fun with them. Dark Souls, however, is going to be amazing...
@iHoldeni From Software is definitely one of the few gaming companies that still make VIDEO GAMES as apposed to just an "interactive movie experience" which we see in most games today.
oh my god what memories of this game from when i was a kid i remember my dad beating the game and i watched the whole time but that was a LONG time ago good times
I went looking for this game because I recently bought Demon's Souls for the PS3 and it reminded me of this game. I spent hours trying to remember the name of this game. I loved the first and its sequel but never saw 3 or 4 in stores back then.
@ghosttube4 the game titled Kings Field outside of Japan is actually Kings Field 2. KF2 is part 3 and the Ancient City is part 4. Part 1 was never localized and has a much smaller scope than the other games.
KINGS FUCKING FIELD. HOLY SHIT. Man, this game fucked me up. Impossible to play, yet intriguing enough to make me want to try over and over. It was ahead of its time.
Lol, I remember playing this game when I was young and I didnt know to equip armor or use spells...I actually made it a respectable distance considering I didnt equip anything
you know you can get that dragon crystal thats near the giant kraken right away in the beginning by running up to it and backing up really fast and it will miss you and then run up to it again really fast and take the crystal without getting hit...you have to be REALLY fast though...

No wonder why Fromsoftware created games like Demon's Souls and Dark Souls.
They already did it since 10 years ago....

Oh, no wonder then.
Arppis 4 months ago
@Arppis King's Field was created by From Software, in which they later continued the King's Field universe through Demon's and Dark souls.
Demon's and Dark souls take place in the King's Field lore.
(A hint is the Figure of Seath that is requested in this game, King's Field II "King's Field 1 USA")

You can run?!
MrTheMuffinMan321 6 months ago
Great games. I never knew they made a third one (4 I guess but I only played the U.S. ones, 1 &2).
I remember some heavy as hell armor... Promeus or Ruinous or something that was awesome but you couldn't run or something.
I wonder how much these influenced Morrowind/Oblivion.
