@ginfub i understand where you're coming from... but racism is based on a power structure. (e.g. slavery, civil rights era, etc.) It's important to understand where artists who have been oppressed are coming from. It's like reading Nikki Giovanni's first 3 books... and saying she's racist. She was reacting to a larger class-oppression structure.

I know it's shocking to hear Nina be so open and blatantly direct with her words... but they were needed at that time to counteract 'real' racism.

What a genius this woman is! She says she sings to move the audience. She sings from intelligence. She is adamant that the audience should know that she know who they are. "I don't want them to think that I don't know who they are". This is critical for a performer and is why not a singly moment is boring when she is performing.

Actors like Bette Davis, Katherine Hepburn and former vogue editor Diana Vreeland talked this way. I notice it as well when i first watch her vids on youtube. Hope that helps :)
