the song is about West Plains mo. He was my grandmothers cousin. Grandma used to tell me stories of playng music with him. He never came back to west plains much after he hit nashville
I can't believe I found this song on here. My mom was born in the 40's grew in Mill Spring Mo. and now her family live in and around Elsinore. We lived there for a while before moving back to North Carolina where my dad is from. At one time my dad owned a tavern called the Star Light in Piedmont. He had this song on the jukebox there. I listened to it growing up all the time, it reminds me of the stories my mom told me about her growing in that area.

Thanks for posting this video. The song was written by my brother Larry Kingston, who passed away a few years ago. Larry worked for Porter and Dolly's publishing company for several years and Porter chose that song as his weekly theme song for his TV show. It's great to see my brother's songs being played and enjoyed by the country fans. (Ken K)
Porter Wagner did not retire in Puxico. I grew up in Wappapello and graduated from Puxico High in 2003. Puxico is lame enough to be proud of it's goatburgers. If Porter Wager lived there it would be common knowledge.
I live in Poplar Bluff, and I grew up in Doniphan, I've been all over the world, this is heaven compared to some of the places I've been in this country and others.
im sorry to say this but Doniphan is the worst place to live in i have family that lives there and when i went there to stay it was full of druggies and full of hicks people there are so rude bunch of rednecks who think they are bad ass but ant shit .....very racist people also
Many years ago, my brother and some other college guys (all from PB,MO) were touring Austria on a bus. Country music was very popular there and this song came on the radio the bus driver had on. It was a new song then and they hadn't ever heard it. They whooped and hollered. And they found out there was a couple from Sikeston in the front of the bus with a different tour. Small world.
@morganmonty2 It's not about Poplar Bluff, it's about 40 miles from Poplar Bluff.
The one good thing about The Bluff is it's a great place to go for shopping and entertainment when you live out in the sticks, or in one of the little 1 horse towns around there.
I am looking for a version of 40 Miles from Poplar Bluff I can download for a funeral this weekend. My mother-in-law was born there. Any ideas? Thanks!
My wife's family is from southeast Missouri (Ellsinore, to be exact, about 30 miles or so northwest of Poplar Bluff on US 60), and yes, you could say that this song describes what life might have been like in the surrounding towns back in the first half of the past century.
Maybe they where singing about Alton lol

That's odd because West Plains is 100 miles from Poplar Bluff. I was born and raised in Poplar Bluff.
