  • Shelley Duvall prevented The Shining from being truly great. Fact.

  • Poor Shelley Duvall. I know Kubrick was acting this way just to get a good performance out of her. But she was going through personal struggles at this time and I'm sure this was all too stressful for her. She's so sweet, like at the end when she's dancing with Danny. What a lovely woman.

  • half of Stanley's crew is British?

  • she and Paul Simon were living together one time. Paul Simon broke up with her at the airport before flying to LOndon to for this movie

  • so this film is actually about apollo 11

  • she has the face for classical painting

  • I have got so much time for stanley kubrick, great director and i think shelley duvall is just ignorant towards and hasnt got the slightest idea about acting

  • @Grime1996 Are you joking? She was amazing in The Shining! Kubrick was an asshole to her and she knew it was to get a better performance out of her, how does that make her ignorant?

  • Light.. of my life

  • Jack Nicolson has been compared, in some respect to Rowdy Roddy Piper and Roddy has been compared to Jack and Jim Carrey on concentrated espresso!

  • @MrsWLeach lol idiot, that doesn't make any sense.

  • @MessatsuHadoken Excuse me, but would you want to be insulted for offering an opinion? That's what I did. Do you know who Jim Carrey or Roddy Piper are? I've heard someone compare Roddy Piper to Jack Nicholson and Jim Carrey. Still and all, these are OPINIONS (personal insights). If you don't like my opinion, fine, but if you don't want people to start insulting you, then show an ounce of respect, if you don't mind...MORON!

  • @MrsWLeach I don't care about your opinion and no one else does either. Tell me what you've done in your life to help society and I MIGHT show you internet respect. Btw, idiot, I don't really care if people insult me on the internet or don't show me respect. Dumb cunt.

  • That music at the end is KOOOLLL!!!

  • 5.28 HILARIOUS.

  • jack is soooo gooooodddd in this movie one of the best horror movies of our time it is a legend piece of work.

  • Vivian Kubrick is a really good filmmaker. There's such an ease in her style that makes this doc so compulsively watchable. I really hope she continues making movies.

  • well then, you may be interested in checking out Kubrick's Odyssey: Secrets hidden in the films of Stanley Kubrick, whcih contains devastating proof that the landing was shot in a studio on Earth! It exposes Kubrick's "deal with devil", how he faked the moon landings in order to secure his future. This film was just released and is available at sacredmysteries . com

  • the book is a much better story and stephen king was annoyed with the film because it's so different, even the ending

  • Thanks for uploading these:) I loved watching them!

  • It's real, but it's not interesting! LOL! Now you know why Stanley was the man! I went to drama school in the late 80s and copped all that "make it real" stuff and it took me years to realise that some stuff that is totally real is also shit. One thing about Kubrick was, he knew how to get the good stuff out of an actor, and would do what he had to do, even if it burnt the bridges with them. I guess he figured actors were expendable, great art is not.

  • this is one of the great classic horror movies. good on stephen king and stanley kubic

  • does anyone know whats the name of the last song of the clip?

  • @vinylnerd Isn't it a great song? It's called "Nocturnal Valse Triste" by Wendy Carlos

  • @kevinsmellls yes it is! thank you I downloaded the whole wendy carlos's album a couple of weeks ago I love it!

  • a lot of people complain about nicholson going over the top in this movie, turns out kubrick wanted it over the top and it works too! not many actors can pull off being over the top, but jack had the right mix of creepiness and dark humor

  • she looks a bit like katherine heigl

  • The snow is Kubrick's metaphor for the crippling effect of cocaine on major Hollywood productions.

  • Jack for president

  • I think she ruined the film... over acted and precious. Jack was Jack and the story was commercial. Not a great film.

  • @vespacurry

Well... sure, you could argue the story is a bit commercial, but the movie as a whole is anything but. It's an art movie, and it's so different and surreal. This movie goes so deep and it hits you on so many levels if you open up to it. And yeah, Shelley's acting isn't groundbreaking stuff... But Jack's performance more than makes up for it.

  • @cruzman3608

    Giday

Yhea, for me it just didn't do it... yhea Jack is great, but the story was a classic parsons story. I think the film would have been much more interesting with out Shelly and I think Stanley would agree... I can't say I have ever seen her anything I ever noticed her to be GREAT. Jack is another story...

  • okay jack is amazing!!!!! and halarious! isn't he like 58 ????

  • @TheHedgehogluva he was about 40 there in the movie, but he's in his 70's now.

  • I didn't know Kubrick was that mean to Shelley, but he got the best out of her. She really did a great job!

Jack is just amazing, and Danny is so cute!

This film is also technically amazingly great...

  • The constant rivers of blood were the least scariest element,

    over the top and unnecessary.

Less blood is scarier than lots of blood.

Besides, the blood thing had already been done in the finale of "Carrie".

  • Soo...... care to tell us what the hell is up the the bear suit guy in bed with the other dude????

  • This is actually the first time I've seen actual footage of Kubrick. After years of just seeing crazy-looking wild-eyed pictures of him, it's almost strange to actually see him moving around, talking, interacting with the crew, etc. What a nightmare this movie set must have been for months, but what a great movie it resulted in.

  • she's got a pretty face, shelly, and that hair is really special, love that hair and not to talk about her voice,it's just incredibly beautiful.

  • It must have seemed odd that Jack Nicholson would choose to do a horror movie after a decade of making films very much grounded in the world of harsh reality.

But he began his career in Roger Corman exploitation flicks, and did things like "The Raven" and "The Terror" with Boris Karloff, movies most people were unaware he had made when he catapulted to fame.

  • Don't believe that lovey-dovey bull Shelley says on camera,

    she actually hated Kubrick's guts.

  • @wheelinthesky300 but im sure shelloveit (your nick;)

  • @wheelinthesky300 but im sure shelloveit (your nick;)

  • @wheelinthesky300

    No she did'nt.

  • God shelly is really sexy in her Interview" 2:23 Yowzerrr

  • Why does Duvall get so much shit for this performance? I thought she was incredible. Great actress? No. But Kubrick got the most out of her. And in doing so, both made and perhaps destroyed her career. Its hard to imagine anyone else in this role.

  • @sateliteoflove202 I thought Shelley and Jack both gave Oscar caliber performances.

There is a bias agaist horror movies among the fuddy-duddies in the Academy,

only rarely were they nominated and recognized as art back then, such as The Exorcist.

  • i love the shining and Nickholson is a great actor : D

  • shelly duvall was such a babe. i know most people say she's ugly, but i dig her, she's hot in an almost strange way. still though, it works for her.

  • This shows you how much nicholson respected kubrick.I mean,i have seen 2 interviews with nicholson(this and the kubrick documentary)..and thats it!

  • @IHaveHeart Shelley is actually pretty for a regular girl, in a gawky way.

There is a sweetness and vulnerability to her.

    She's just not movie-star pretty.

Which works to great advantage in The Shining,

as the characters look like real, everyday people.

I think Stephen King wrote Wendy as a former beauty queen,

which doesn't make sense, why would she wind up

with a loser like Jack Torrance?

  • @wheelinthesky300 Well, she does have a nice facial structure and lovely high cheekbones! If only it werent for those ugly teeth ...

  • @IHaveHeart during this movie she's very ugly, but in real life she's a bit more beautiful. But she's still ugly

  • @IHaveHeart I agree, She was so hot in a perfect, imperfect way

  • Really nice to see Jack Nicholson trying to juggle!

  • Jack's character was right on the money!!!! He is nutz, and brings out every speck from within, genious!!

  • @rob2049

    thank you!

I love it when people misspell the word 'genius'.

  • LMAO

    1:35

    "Oh shit..." =S

  • They should never have used her for that part....poor selection

  • is "The shining" better than he book?

  • imo yes although many will probably say no. The book was different in that it focused more on Jack's alcoholism and depression which had built up since he went on the wagon after breaking Danny's arm. The book is a bit silly imo, it features moving hedge animals and spooky fire hydrants (I kid you not) and the ending is very 'hollywood' in comparison to Kubrick's version, I wont spoil in case you decide to read it, he also wields a crocket mallet rather than an axe. It's worth a read though.

  • hmmm ok.

wait he has a mallet and trys to kill his wife and son?

  • I know it sounds like I'm making it up but yeah it's true. Just type the shining & mallet into Google and you'll see for yourself. I think the axe was far more sinister but others disagree.

  • @essexboy240 The book is very King, that's what it is ;)

  • you can't even compare, the book is the best book i have ever read

  • I was just reading on Wikipedia that Kubrick loved animals, and had many dogs and cats! He was sad when a family of bunnies were accidentally killed during shooting "Full Metal Jacket" & canceled shooting the rest of the day! He kept his kitties with him often in the editing room to spend more time with them. So cute! :):)

  • I love that Kubrick is choosing to argue with a woman wielding a large knife XD

  • It really does make him look tough.

  • luv u Wndy, ur the Cutuest ever

  • I don't think Kubrick is actually that type of person. He is just acting that way, because this is the "Making of the Shining". How he makes his actors/characters SHINE.

    Not supernatural, just Kubrick.

  • RIP Stanley, You still to this day are 1 of the best American film directors

  • 5:31-5:40 2 CUTE!!!!!!!

  • danny is just 2 cute! when he's dancing with shelley!

  • love em al , so fukcin nostaligc, wish id been there and met then jus tthen, ,mmm, i love this film, it give methecreps, and my fav moviw with cwo, , the final stoundtraqck is so kurbishtype, wat is it?

  • Dude, your keyboard is broken.

Other than that, I agree with everything you just said.

  • or tried to say

  • or tried to type.

    But effectively, yes.

  • farid jabba is a muslim who is in desperate need of a keyboard.

  • the guy with the walki talki is 2nd a.d 'michael stephenson', the location is the backlot of elstree studios in england - incidently where the Big brother house is now!

  • I wish Kubrick made more horror films. His dark themes compliment the genre well.

  • I cant belive that Kubrick was nominated for the worst director award for this filmm but that just proves that his movies are like vine now this movie is a icon

  • when was that ?

  • She's on drugs.

  • who=?

  • shelly is actually a pretty woman!

    something about her...

  • she's like a hillbilly scarlett johansson with brown hair

  • hahahaha,

    you are right!

    she does!!!

  • @joyouslife4all the ugly thing are the teeth

  • Sorry, I ment Georgie.

  • yeah, he looks like Georgie.

  • That guy with the walkie-talkie at 0:53.. Is that the guy who plays Dim in "A Clockwork Orange"?

  • Dim?!

    1) doesn't look anything like him (Warren Clarke)

    2) he's still acting

  • Best film ever made.

  • Directing must be incredible exhausting, it's admirable and Kubrick a genius...

  • Oh yeah, very stressful. The whole weight of the picture rests on your shoulders alone, pretty much. You always have to know what's going to come next and how all the pieces of the puzzle are going to fit together in the end.

  • and for the actors..... exhausting

  • Are they watching Lynch's Eraserhead at 5:22? It looks like it by the look on their faces. I read on imdb trivia that Kubrick made the cast watch Eraserhead to put them in the mood.

  • your funny

  • no its true, Stan actually commented on it being his favorite flick

  • Is it? I think i read he felt that the "Dekalog" was the only masterpiece he could ever name in his lifetime.

  • Now that is interesting.

Or maybe just some take they did previously?

But Shelley would be stressed whatever horror she sees.

  • Stephen King has a hard time being original, so it was up to Kubrick to pull it off and I think he really did a great job.

  • 5:58-6:03 Jack juggling LOL

  • im mad

    hey just msg me! 63

  • whatwas that music at the end????? creepy. I want it.

  • The director may be necrotic but he's created some of the best movies out there. I love The Shining.

  • I think she's cute and a great actress and did a fine job in the film and the film wouldn't be what it is without her, and I'm sorry they were so hard on her during filming.

  • I'm not. They pushed her ass so hard that she gave the performance of her career.

  • what did shelly say at 2:18? body soup? lol that's what it sounded like. besides that, i felt bad she was picked on =( poor lady lol

  • "bite of soup"

    Anyway set-language only sounds harsh.

  • I'm not gonna hurt ya, i'm gonna bash your brains in!

  • Did she say she got "such a bollocking"? Haha brilliant, did feel a bit bad for her though xD

  • I think Kubrick was an excellent director, and Duvall is an excellent actress. I do feel he picked on her a little, but only to get a genuine reaction out of her which was essential for the character she plays. Not to mention, he's known for bein a real perfectionist, and all the actors probably got kinda pissy with him at some point lol

  • She is Olive Oyl!

  • Just a simple misunderstanding. Kubrick can't say "relax" and then "Ooh, action!"

    Shelley was right.

  • Yeah, he gave her conflicting direction. I think he tried to anger her on purpose, because he shows an irrational amount of rude bias towards her.

  • Is there a reason? Did he originally not want her for the role or something?

  • No, she was hand selected by him. He did it to get a better performance out of her. He manipulated his actors like that.

  • So .. he wanted her to be angry during that part of the movie? Makes sense, I guess.

If I were an actor working with him, I'd probably respect him as an artist, but pretty much despise the man.

  • Oh Stanly you genius. Wish I could have met him, he'll live on with us through his movies. The shining my all time favourite inspiration.

  • Totally !!

  • Ha ha, he says Wendy and darling in succession, thus naming the peter pan character.

  • Wow, I never noticed that. Very interesting.

  • note how Shelley starts to instinctively wave the knife at Stanley when he loses his temper with her

  • "do you want mood music?" haha. cold.

  • Hahaha! I had never caught that before! Thanks, wishywishy!

  • Oh god, Jack Nicholson is so fuckin' funny even though this is a horry movie.

  • Kubrick did lose his temper here, but it wasn't a temper tantrum by any means. For an angry guy, Kubrick is quite quiet.

Check out David O. Russell's meltdown with Lily Tomlin. Now that's a temper tantrum!

  • you've had your whole FUCKING life to think things over! what goods a few minutes more gonna do to you now!? Wendy! Darling! Light of my life! I'm not gonna hurt you, i'm just gonna BASH YOUR BRAINS IN!

    what a fuccin guy

  • shelley: why do you want to do this to me?

  • shes scary with the knife hehe

  • Snow!

Isolation. All work & no play makes Jack a dull boy.All work & no play makes Jack a dull boy.All work & no play makes Jack a dull booey. All work & no play makes Jack a dull boy.

All work & no play makes Jack a dull bog.

All work & no play makes Jack a dull boy.

All work & no play makes Jack a dull boy.

  • a dilly-bag?

  • um listen porn..person why the fook are u commenting here if u didn't like the movie?? seriously that even lamer then people using youtube coz they liked it (well..who are we kidding?) The shining kicks ass and you probably don't appreciate it's genius compared to some of the trashier stuff today

  • Kubrick was a cinematic genius, but too bad the dreadful "Eyes Wide Shut" was his last film. Lord, that was an awful mess.

  • It was actually one of the most technically perfect films ever made.

  • No, it wasn't. Try watching again, and again, and again...

    Finally, you'll get it.

  • Kubrick is fuckin intense, I love it.

  • Could she possibly look any more like Olive Oyle?

  • LOL, i think she did play that character in the popeye film

  • How dare you! and learn to type

  • the shining is awesome! ive made a spoof if lee evans was in the shining!. if u like this you might like my video

  • the Shining is one of those movies that everyone in it are right. someone said on here that shelly was wrong for the part. My ? is who would have been right? Jane Fonda. really come on she was real I wanted to kill her too lolololol jk

  • Judging by the fact that the book put an enormous amount of stress on the supernatural pull that the hotel had on Jack Torrance and the movie dissuaded the viewer from buying into supernatural activity altogether, i would call the movie adaptation a total cop-out. That being said, love kubrick and 2001 is one of my a.t.fav's

  • This movie is about isolation and paranoia. Screw the supernatural, it would just alienate the audience, it's not interesting nor scary if in big doses like in the book. That's why the book sucks compared to the movie, just watch the adaptation King made years later, it blows.

  • your right but it is about Supernatural too.

Duh! can't you get anymnore bloody obvious??

The title, The SHining? Hellloooo the shining means the psychic power the boy has. So if your telling me it is just about paranoia and isolation and not supernatural theres seriously something wrong upstairs in yout head.

  • I agree with Your 1st part of the comment.I disagree with the2nd part though.I thought it was pretty good in its own way.Hey,I heard that Stephen King did'nt like Kubricks version of The Shining,is that true doYou know?

  • i think she's greate in this movie.. shelly can't be always popeye's wife... i don't think so....

  • you made me laugh for the first time today. eternal thanks

  • Shelly was the best victim ever in a horror film. Kubrick brought that out of her.

  • Shelly Duvall is amazing at what she does, she played the roll fantastic

  • Funny to hear an American like Shelly Duvall using the British slang "get a bollocking"! It's obvious she picked up on what the crew must have been whispering about Generalissimo Kubrick on the set.

  • Kubrick picked her because he knew she was fragile and perhaps her annoying pure helplessness. And he deliberately just picked on her to get her agitated and sad to fuel her performance. Kubrick picked her for a good reason.

  • i think kubrick seemed a bit harsh on her.

  • I admit shelley does seem pretty annoying but she did very well in the movie.

  • gotta admit watchin them mop up fake blood made me laugh

  • I totally disagree. She was every bit as integral to the texture of the movie as Jack was. There is a reason Kubrick picked her.

  • i can't find the first part of this documentary, can anyone help?

  • I always loved the end of this documentary, with the music and behind the scenes feel.
