Try Quebec next winter, we had -42 last year and my 1993 Jetta started better than that even at -42... (Well it started right away but then it has a really choppy idle, that's to be expected..)
Well, I never said this is an easy start, did I? Actually this car has 6 years old battery, and it stayed five days unused (under heavy conditions, about -30C all the time) before this start. No engine heater in use. I'd almost call it a miracle.
@Jiiluu Don't worry, in a couple years we won't even have a winter anymore, it's already starting here, when i was 15 there was minimum 4-5 feet of snow everywhere, and right now, January 11, i can see my lawn through the 1 inch snow we have..
I ride my quad in the snowmobile trails for crying out loud!
Yikes....I started my '99 Passat 1.8t here in Canada last year when it was in the -30's (C) and it did NOT sound like that. And it also started a lot easier lol.
@Jiiluu Strange, in Australia our weather is getting less extreme. Where I live in Adelaide, South Australia, we normally get at least 1 or 2 weeks of summer temperatures near 40 Degrees C maybe just a bit over. Last summer I can't remember any days over 40, so far this year 2 days just at 40. We don't use block heaters much here !!!! :-) But we can warm food by putting it on the roof of the car in the sun! Hope you and your car survive winter, such low temperatures are unheard of here.
Haha, certainly no need for block heater down there. +40C is way too hot imo, we had couple week period of +30-35C on past two summers, and that was awful. Pale Finns can't handle it. :-)
last 2 winters have been quite cold in scandinavia, at least here in Sweden. im driving an -83 Mercedes 240D which will start up in all temps! its only up to the battery really..
Do not rev the engine when it it that cold.Wait for it to warm up a bit first the oil will be too thick and will not work properly and also the seals will go.Just don't do it.
@rchrdbgi8 Erm, isn't 0W30 an indicator that the oil is thinner when cold and thickens as it heats up? As the first number is the viscosity at low temperatures, e.g. thinner.
@vodka492 The octane only freezes at -60 °, the mixture that represents the essence lose its ability to explosions before!
From -40 °, gasoline does not ignite more. In chemistry it's called the flash point! Then at -55 ° leaves me laugh:) That said, there may be a heating system on your vehicle but it is doubtful
We had extremely cold temperatures in northern Finland back in 1999. The record was -51,5 Celsius. I remember news stories about buses and taxis that kept their engines running for several days in a row, to survive the "frost wave". They were thinking it's impossible to start engine if they let it go off.
@cedJohns well when gasoline and air enters the combustion chamber it gets compressed by the piston and when the air is compressed it increases its temperature, probably enough to get ignited. I have more doubt that a battery would be powerful enough to crank the engine thats frozen like a rock and the battery would be very weak at that temperature. And i would fear that the oil wouldn't circulate properly in the engine on startup, it would need a very low viscosity rating.
We often have these kind of temperature during winter, here in Canada., normally in January. Our cars really start that way in those conditions. I never plugged the block heater and it always start. You have to ensure that your battery is very good tough. A little trick : put some gas anti-freeze in the tank, always keep your tank full to avoid condensation in it, and prime your pump and injectors 3-4 times before starting the engine. Normaly, at -30°C, my engine starts within 5secs.
Lol, man imagine how many cars (millions) in Russia existing in the similiar or even much more extreme and cold weather? Or in Alaska? Or northern Canada?
example: Norilsk, Murmansk, Yakutsk, Archangelsk (all are very big cities and closer to arctic circle than Finland).
@AlexandrKC My car lives the same thing every winter! I don't even live in the northernmost part of Canada (I'm im Québec) and -30~ ish (celcius) happen a couple of times every winter!
But with synthetic oil it's really easier to start
wow -30 starts couldn't imagine having to do it myself... but that sounded pretty tough on the engine and if you make that a daily habit could be bad.. have you thought of using a block heater
Yeah that's true, it provides 240 volts and usually has 16 amp fuse. It's possible to charge an electric vehicle with it, but we mostly use them for block heater and interior heater in winter time. Basicly every building has these plug boxes.
p.s. battery was original, five years old, at the end of it's life cycle. I was lucky to get engine running. :-)
@CAESARbonds Often, nowdays, the outlets for block heaters have a timer, so that you get 2-3 hour of power, adjustable to fit your schedule or time of "departure". To charge electric cars, there are other "poles".

@goldenbullet08 all the fuel in the exhaust system that hasn't burnt, then when a big gust of oil gets shot through the engine with water, it shoots it straight out the exhaust equaling high fumes on starts where it wont turn over or a while....
There is something clearly wrong with that engine. What oil are you using? I've never had problems like that with my 6MPS and I used it in some pretty extreme conditions.
