@jediindyfan98@TheJarhead71 They are re-enacting a 1968 photograph by Arthur Greenspon, in which a US Marine is being shot relentlessly, he is holding his hands up not only because of the force of the bullets but also because rigor mortis (post death rigidity) is gradually setting in.

I never understood this scene. Didn't Barnes (Tom Beringer) already kill Elias (Willem Defoe)earlier in the movie? Remember how Barnes didn't like Elias, and then when Barnes came across Elias in the jungle with no one around he shot him. Then this scene is later in the movie - and Elias is somehow alive again?? Someone please explain if you know the answer, thanks.
@zuzanarox Barnes thought he killed Elias (so did the rest of us) but it turns out he wasn't dead - just wounded. The injury slowed him down enough, though, for him to be discovered by enemy combatants, chased through the jungle and...well, you saw the result.
@wbustudent thanks! That makes sense now. I wonder why Oliver Stone wasn't more clear - but then again, sometimes directors make it vague on purpose to force the audience to think. thanks again for the explanation.
@CastleSnowflake because the seargent was the one who shot him in the first place because Seargent Elias was going to have Staff Seargent Barnes court marshalled over an illegal killing in "the village" which is a few scenes before this one...
best piece of acting to date u cant act that wat out of a nutsack any better than this, and to be shot 3 times b4 tht scene ever came is just brilliant to see the way he was running with 50 VC chasing him

@robohunter2000ad soooooo a shot from an AK47 or whatever rifle he was using would not go all the way through? Im not a gun expert, but most times it would usually go throgh
This scene is so brilliant! and the way Taylor looks at Burns in the chopper, knowing it was him who did it. The Vietnam war was the first war where the phrase "fragging" was coined. Where if an officer or senior was disliked then a platoon (by either popular decision or individuals) would kill the lead officer by means of a grenade or 'friendly fire'. So this film has some truth and validation to it...it's why I like it so much.
@HammersmithUK I dont know if this is true but I was told that this scene has some historical accuracy, not that a sergeant was shot by his own but a soldier was left behind and was running from 50+ vietcong across a field. He didnt make it, which makes this scene even more chilling
@imsupercerrrrrial Wasn't the pose that Willem does at the end where he's sticking his arms up in the air inspired by something that a soldier actually did during the war? I think there's a photograph on the platoon wikipedia page.
