The choice of song favored hadrein but I still completely dig marcus. Marcus always try to sound like marcus anywhere. Those other guys try to sound like jaco
i like both, there are both different, feraud is faster with a light touch, smooth, marcus is more visceral. But the piece sound so random, no groove on that
Keep in mind that these guys play all of this stuff impromptu for the comments below these guys don't come to Namm with a setlist all the stuff they play is improvisation with a couple set parts of a song here or there I like this version to a certain extent more than Jaco's because they trade lines back and forth and the fluidity in which they play those lines is incredible is incredible Hadrien is a great example of a modern bassist while Marcus shows a lot of the old school by his groove.
and what you get from hadrien's tone is just the low mid, because it is like that. marcus got the high, mid and low.
all big head cats.. they all play most songs with their only one instrument. thats because they've grown, and where as having their own voice is very important.
at this level there is no competition between the two. these people are having a conversation not an argument. to say one is "better" is kinda childish. you can say who you prefer tho.
i use to think that every musician has his own way to talk to the one who can hear him/her, and in this way i would be agree with you. But in this video it isn't the fact that hadrien did it better, i don't think so, i think instead that miller broke the meaning of the original, with a horrible sound. Continuum is a song inspired by his sound, you can't ignore that and break in with any sound you like, and i'm not saying that you have to it on jaco's ways, in fact, hadrien did it very well, ...
the artist have to be clever, doing that, he can do it in such many ways. In fact, my last sentence was, "i'm not saying that you have to do it on jaco's ways".
I'm agree with you, this is his own presentation, but his own presentation change the sound and the meaning of the song, making it meaningless, beacause the sound has a very important rol in the meaning, If you ignore that, you change the meaning, the concept, you are telling that it's a better version.
marcus has his own sound.. his very own sound. why would he play the song IF he plays it with jaco's sound?? see. that's the cool thing about music, everyones got their own voice, and such differences make variety.
marcus miller is a virtuoso, maestro. i dont think he ruined this song in any kind of way.he knows what he's doing. better than all of us who's watching here.
whether its horrible or not, its up to you. go watch hadrien's version of teen town. you'll know what i mean.
i repeat, for the third time now, "i'm not saying that you have to do it on jaco's ways".
A writer, write a book for someone that can read it. Returning to the main theme, one artist can't depend of the sound that he creates. If i have a name in the music world, all that i do, doesn´t need to have the same sound necesarelly. The way that i change the sound, for every matter, my intelligence to aply it, makes my art. Marcus is a virtuoso, ok, but he is a man also, and he can be wrong sometimes.
sure? i like this conversation, really. It's interesting.
I noticed that you're talking in general terms, however i talking about one particular piece of music. I've listened to hadrien's versions, and they have too much spirit and own personality, it's a way in the line that i'm describing.
You'll see, continuum is mainly inspired by the way that the fretless sounds through it. Other songs are inspired by the music, but this also by the sound. (continue)
no it doesnt. you think that way because its being played by fretless.. and you're actually stating opinions here, not facts at all.
and maybe, marcus doesnt have a fretless at the time. that's his signature bass that he brings with him (or maybe borrowed it from fender booth)
your last comment is true, but i dont think marcus sound makes the song sounds bad, or "wrong" for you. and besides, aint the camera is shit? it cant capture low frequency,
i'm still thinking that it isn't a matter of fretless or fretted sound. Hadrien really got it, in both versions, playing a fretted bass. Personally i think that the accents that he made on the main notes, kills the "spirit" of the song, makes it very thick and vulgar. I understand, of course, that this is an improvisation in the namm show, and they play with the stuff of the place, it would be very different if they were playing a show.
You can't play it in the same way, same sound, that you play in other songs, because the meaning, the essence of the song rests in the sound. I'm not telling that you have to play it like jaco, that would be poor. The way that the artist can use this, makes him more or less smart.
What i see when i watch the video, is a marcus playing that with a buzzing-shrill-cutting sound, emphatizing the notes in one way that kills the spirit of continuous atmosphere.
Hadrien is so friggin' accurate, with great articulation and tone - not only speed. Melodically he's happening as well and being so young it's going to be interesting to see where he goes. Normally, I don't like slappin'-n-poppin' nor the scooped out mids and nasal thin highs of that playing style. That said, I have lots of respect for Marcus, his achievements and musicianship. He's the only slapper I've heard with good tone and musicality and can move me with his playing - but only Marcus....

the jaco version of this song is still best, this video sounds like two improv's that at best are nice but really don't do justice for the both of the players. Marcus Miller shouldn't be compared to Hadrien, because Marcus history is longer and more awarded, noted composer and producer for Luther Vandross, Tom Brown, Lee Ritenour, etc, etc, from the 70's to this date still setting standards, still proving he is one of the basses champs and always in the conversation on who's the best of all time

Marcus has established his greatness, Feraud is well on his way and they're playing a tune by Jaco who paved the way for all modern bassists to take the bass outof the background and into the soloist forefront. Whats interesting is the old skool guys: Jaco, Berlin, Marcus, King, Lee, Jones, Squire, etc. all did on four string basses! Less is more to say the least!
does it really matter how many strings u have? its all in the sound. feraud is not a name to be taken lightly. he is already an amazing bassist rite now in his early twenties. he is better than a lot of professional bassist out on the scene rite now.

Nice that my original comment was removed, though all I stated is you can make as much music on four strings as six. Personally, I think Hadrien is at the forefront of modern bassists in terms of taste and technique as is Matthew Garrison, Tal Wilkenfeld, among others, so sorry if this is something to get butt hurt over!
I think Mr Feraud is really able to play bass even on 3 strings and make music anyways ...His great musicality will still be there ...listen to that solo .
Marcus is Old school an that is the foundationion of music an Hadrien Is of the new age VERY asmaing an talented guy But even if they were off the same time they play to completely diffrent styls Marcus is a groove solid bassist all about the sound of each string workin with anotherNO Hadrien is amazin he of the new age where we take from other instruments and make it our own on the bass Harmonic arpegios etc(excuse my spelling.but they both great to hear indivdually an together

Marcus' feel is ridiculous as usual!!Hadrien sounds good as well. But, if you can't hear the difference in musical maturity, then you're not a musician. Listen to Marcus play heart felt melodies, and listen to Hadrien play rapid scale passages. Listen to Marcus' sound of clarity, and hear how murky Hadrien's bass sounds. They are not even close to being compared. Not yet. Hadrien's day will come.
REPLY TO SAXMANRH part 3 You should give lessons to your ears to manage with that and maybe learn yourself about the NEW instrumentistes before talking about what you can't argue correctly ....it's a part of the future man .

I can respect you stand on this...I'm simply posting my opinion. I was actually responding to BodaciouslyHST from a week ago. My intentions were not to compare the two, but to simply rebutt that foolish comment from BodaciouslyHST. As far as learning about the current sounds of bass today. Clarity never goes out of style. There is no excuse for not having clarity on an instrument, especially when you have custom gear. I like to hear what is being played. Lesson number one of music.

The problem since 5/6 years with Marcus , is that he is making the same records !!and his "musical maturity" as you said ..don't give him back CREATIVITY ..it seams it's gone !!
Marcus merely restates and embellishes the melody over and over during his solo and tries to wow with unimpressive "tricks" (see 0:09).
Hadrien creates genuinely unique melodies, has inventive phrasing, uses chord and scale substitutions interestingly, and can actually build and release tension. Word to Miller devouts: You can't play only minor pentatonic and dorian and expect there to be tension and realease.
Marcus and Hadrien are playing together very well, so for all of those Marcus Miller haters out there that have nothing better to do but type negative comments stating that he is doing nothing but showing off really have no idea what Marcus is about, which is grooving and backing up Hadrien and making sure the groove is on lock
Cut the crap. They are both great. I could say Hadrien is merely noodling around and creating nothing musical but lets face it, it's just a jam. Get off it!!
NOTHING MUSICAL????????????!!!!!!!!!!!R YOU OUT OF YOUR FN MIND!!!!????....Do you not hear him connecting beautiful melodic scales with chords that only sound right in this song??...You're tone def I swear if you dont think he's not making nething musical here..It's truely mind boggling!

The problem since 5/6 years with Marcus , is that he is making the same records !!and his "musical maturity" as you said ..don't give him back CREATIVITY ..it seams it's gone !!
Anyway , it's still awsome on live ...
Best regards

Hadrien totally walks all over miller in this. Far better musician, even in his young age.
