Dey didn't like the fact that a classically trained singer like himself would have to lose, though only on-screen, to an un-trained singer (Kishore). In the song, at a couple of times Mehmood had to say "sur gadbad jee" against Sunil Dutt where Kishore was singing hence Dey refused to say those words so Mehmood gave his own voice for the same.

If u pay attention nt jess tht part, bt whenever mehmood is talking n nt singing in the song the voice is his own. Rajinder Kishan penned those rib tickling lyrics at RD's behest with probable contributions from Kishore Da. RD was much ahead of his times and was highly appreciated by the youth of his era for his modernity but make no mistake he had solid grounding in Classical music. It would have have been impossible for anyone else to create such a song

Kaala re jaa re jaa re is a parody of an earlier song of Lata's "Chanda re jaa jaa re in the 1949 movie Ziddi based on Raag Chayanat. This Lata song was inspired by a classic Thumri of late 19th century "Kaaga re jaa re jaa re". I guess this parody must have been an improvisation by Kishore Kumar. The sudden switch from Jhinjhoti to Chayanat, a purely Hindustani raag without a warning derails the South Indian Maestro Mehmood's singing so thoroughly making him fume at the change in the melody.
