3. Being hit with a steel cowcatcher at mainline speed would in no way save an animal. The impact is too great.

4. You haven't seen a cowcatcher since steam trains left the rails around the 1950s. They have effectively been out of use for 60 years.

5. Today small plows and "kickers" are used.
