In the original novel, the monster forces the doctor into making him a bride or else he will attack his family. While Frankenstein doesn't actually do so in the novel, it was cool that the studio kept the source material in mind while making the series.
movies I want to see on monster madness 1.Candyman 2.Scanners 3.Videodrome 4.Rosemary's Baby 5.The Omen 6.Jeepers Creepers 7.Them! 8.Alligator 9.Hostel 10.The Ring
@familyguy1231 Boris Karloff was an Englishman. His real name was William Henry Pratt. He later changed his name when he was on stage. He explained that Karloff was a sir name on his mother's side of the family, and he took the name Boris out of thin air.
James says that the description of the monster in the novel is vague, but he's kind of wrong there: translucent yellowish skin pulled so taut over the body that it "barely disguised the workings of the vessels and muscles underneath"; watery, glowing eyes, flowing black hair, black lips, and prominent white teeth
@picknana yeah and i heard the monster was created in a vat of chemicals or something like that in the original novel rather than being composed of sown up dead body parts.

in the whole series there was frankeinstein ride of frankeinstein and son of frankeinstein ghost of frankeinstein and house of frankeinstein and apperaed as a monster mash character with dracula and wolfman
karloff as the monster was amazing the first 3 movies were wow then after with ghost of frankeinstein went down hill house of frankeinstein was fun i guess
@nathaniel497 It seems funny how even back then, some sequels to movies weren't as good as their original films. Still; Ghost of Frankenstein, House of Frankenstein and Son of Frankenstein were fun and enjoyable movies to me.
@sadlobster1 i like ghost of frankeinstein but i dont think its that great house i think is so fun to wtch cause the wolfman dracula and frankeinstein are all in it together son of frankeinstein had a bit of a boring feel to it but its still great part of thne trilogy i love frankeinstein and the bride of frankeinstein frankeinstein rules love the wolfman hes the best out off all the universal golden age monsters
@nathaniel497 I love The Wolfman as well but there was one thing that kind of bugged me about werewolves. They always change during a full moon but it probably happens only once a month.

The reason for Lugosi not playing the monster wasnt because he didnt have any spoken dialoge. When they made the test footage for Lugosi as the monster, he looked hilariously stupid in the make up. Everybody including him hated it so they all decided that he would'nt play the monster. The documentary "Universal Horror" said what James said, and "The Frankenstein Files" said what I said. Thats kinda confusing, but I think the documentary mainly focusing on Frankenstein would be right.
Bela Lugosi didnt refuse to play the monster because he didnt have any sponken dialoge. They made test footage of him as the monster and he looked hialoriously stupid in it. Everybody hated it including Lugosi, so they all decided that he would'nt play the monster.
The original story is completely different than the movie. First monster described in the book is very different, yellow eyes, long hair, tall, no screws on the neck, intelligent, talking normally, can (very quickly) run, jump, swim. SPOILERS.
The monster in the book save the girl, and not drown as it did in the movie. And that story is never directly described as accurately created and revived the monster. And there is no assistant in the story. The book definitely recommend it to everyone.
I kinda liked "Batman & Robin" at first, but after several times of watching it, it just slowly started looking and feeling more stupid XD
Now it's one of those "So bad it's good" movies, mainly because of Arnold but my biggest fav in that category is "Street Fighter", R. Julia as Bison is gold! XD
It was a reply to someone who apparently took "Batman & Robin" as a serious movie just as I did with "Young Frankenstein" before seeing the ACTUAL "Frankenstein" movie
@SolidMike84 Thanks for clearing that up. Young Frankenstein was a funny movie but the original Karloff film will always be the best. I am looking forward to Guillermo Del Toro's own vision of Frankenstein, in the future
Very funny movie, but when I was a kid and first saw it, I had gotten the impression that it was supposed to be scary. So I took it seriously, until many many years later ^^
Yep, the original and best
Too much remakes for my taste nowadays, but that does sound somewhat interesting
i watched this in class, and when the little girl scene came on, every single person in my class burst into laughter. except this one girl who was like "i cant watch!" lol. possibly one of the best movies ever made. i like to think of this as the first slasher movie. btw, 2:45 WTF THATS BELA LUGOSI??? That dr. patorious guy is wierd for those of you who haven't seen bride of frankenstein let me tell you he has little people in jars i'm not lying it's a wierd ass scene and yes there alive imagine little pepole running around there about 2" tall.
Wow "RockmanVX"........loved your comment about the "drowning in 5 feet of water" and that you "just don't buy it" !!! The movie is a classic and now about 80 years old. Little did they know when they produced this that your keen eye would come along 8 decades later and post those intelligent comments on this venue. I've always wanted to be an intellectual like you :) bwahahahahahahaha !!!
@Suchahama Actually, the first was "White Zombie". Although the novel "Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus" was one of the earliest novels to explore the concept of reanimating corpses.
It's no doubt that the first two are the most classic due to Karloff's outstanding presence as the monster. The sequels (including the 40s monster mashes) tend to range from good to OK. There were other good Frankenstein films like the ones from Hammer, but it's Karloff all the way. I always like that last part where the monster snarls at the bride like he wants to make love, it's funny but not in a bad way!
I ABSOLUTELY HATE ALL THE FRANKENSTEIN'S MONSTER SPOOFS, AND HOW THEY CALL THE MONSTER FRANKENSTEIN ARGHH, JUST THINKING ABOUT IT MAKES ME SOO ANGRY!!
The Frankensteins monster is essentially a zombie. At least that's how I see it. So basically you could call the moster an old grandaddy of all the zombies.
@thezombiekidsrhere Absolutely. Outside of this one flaw, I thought it was a good movie, and plan on watching it along with Dracula back-to-back every Halloween.
the Mel Brooks spoof is genius, by the way, really one the best movie i ever watched, and that i could watch over and over (this one, and also Young Frankenstein)
What a great movie. It's visually spectacular and it's a cautionary tale which warns you of the consequences when you try to play God. In the novel, Dr. Frankenstein becomes so obsessed with killing his monster, that it drives him insane.
Another great monster! These are my top Frankenstein actors! Boris Karloff (FRANKENSTEIN 1931, BRIDE OF, SON OF) Shuler Hensley (VAN HELSING) Glenn Strange (HOUSE OF FRANKENSTEIN / DRACULA and ABBOTT & COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN) Tom Noonan (THE MONSTER SQUAD) Peter Boyle (YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN) Lon Chaney Jr. (GHOST OF) Robert De Niro (MARY SHELLEY'S FRANKENSTEIN) Charles Ogle (Edison's FRANKENSTEIN) Christopher Lee (CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN) Bela Lugosi (FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLFMAN)
Just got done watching the movie, and one thing bothers me: the pond scene. The Creature throws the little girl less than 5 feet into the pond...and she drowns. Ok, she can't swim, I can buy that. What I can't buy is that she can't swim 5 feet to the shore. It shouldn't be that hard. Maybe I don't know squat about swimming, but I just don't buy that.
I see your point. But also understand the movie is old. It was made during a time where people didn't analyze movies point for point like we do today. There are countless older movies where things are a little off or unbelievable. I guarantee you no one was thinking that back when this movie was new. I am sure it was even considered pretty scary back then too, which by today's standards and all the blood we see, it really isn't.
A little girl suddenly being swallowed by water all around, where she doesn't know how to swim and is probably unaccustomed to it? It's not that hard to believe. If it were a teenager or a grown woman, that would be worse, but a kid isn't a very far stretch.
@RockmanVX Well have you thought about what you are watching, like, at all? You are watching a story about a scientist who creates a monster from parts of dead bodies, then brings it to life with lightning... And you're going to call that scene out for not being real? Jeez I thought you would have accepted this as fiction right from the first idea... It surprises me that THAT is your main complaint in regards to the fiction involved.
It's about the willing suspension of disbelief. I can accept a resurrected abomination. I can't accept a girl drowning when she's right next to the shore.
@RockmanVX Ah ok I gotcha... Just a little weird to see that is all! :P Really good movie though eh? I love this shit these are my favorite types of movies. They are just too classic!
@RockmanVX If children are thrown into water when they cant swim they panic, and loose there senses, so no, she couldn't swim five feet. A child can drown in three feet water.
@RockmanVX my sister almost drowned in the same type of situation *without Frankenstein of course *, she just started to panic and sink, all I did was reach out and grab her . So it was possible in my opinion. I know your comment is old but I wanted to comment anyway :P
@RockmanVX i can go with the 5 feet thing. she might have never leaned to swim. what i can't buy is the villagers somehow relizingthat the creature drowned her. no one saw the creature throw her in, how the hell do they know that she did not just fall in?
@RockmanVX here's what really bothers me in the opening creditsit says this "the creature ............?" why did they not put boris karloff's name in the opening credits
@RockmanVX i see your point i actully noticed it the second time i watched it but then again it was the 30's and it was problably the only safe for the kid

The Frankensteins monster is essentially a zombie. At least that's how I see it. So basically you could call the moster an old grandaddy of all the zombies.

Bride Of Frankenstein shouldn't even be considered a horror movie. It's just a great, great film.

Frankenstein is great, but Bride of Frankenstein is even better. IMO.

@thezombiekidsrhere Absolutely. Outside of this one flaw, I thought it was a good movie, and plan on watching it along with Dracula back-to-back every Halloween.

I think why people call the monster Frankenstein is because Victor (He's called Henry in the movie) named his monster after it's creator.

What a great movie. It's visually spectacular and it's a cautionary tale which warns you of the consequences when you try to play God. In the novel, Dr. Frankenstein becomes so obsessed with killing his monster, that it drives him insane.

RockmanVX 2 years ago 38
I see your point. But also understand the movie is old. It was made during a time where people didn't analyze movies point for point like we do today. There are countless older movies where things are a little off or unbelievable. I guarantee you no one was thinking that back when this movie was new. I am sure it was even considered pretty scary back then too, which by today's standards and all the blood we see, it really isn't.
LobsterFusion 2 years ago 4
A little girl suddenly being swallowed by water all around, where she doesn't know how to swim and is probably unaccustomed to it? It's not that hard to believe. If it were a teenager or a grown woman, that would be worse, but a kid isn't a very far stretch.

ahh mann you just threw a spoiler there :,(
luishomeroremohsiul 2 years ago
@RockmanVX Well have you thought about what you are watching, like, at all? You are watching a story about a scientist who creates a monster from parts of dead bodies, then brings it to life with lightning... And you're going to call that scene out for not being real? Jeez I thought you would have accepted this as fiction right from the first idea... It surprises me that THAT is your main complaint in regards to the fiction involved.
Dolf9271986 1 year ago
It's about the willing suspension of disbelief. I can accept a resurrected abomination. I can't accept a girl drowning when she's right next to the shore.
RockmanVX 1 year ago
@RockmanVX Ah ok I gotcha... Just a little weird to see that is all! :P Really good movie though eh? I love this shit these are my favorite types of movies. They are just too classic!

@RockmanVX If children are thrown into water when they cant swim they panic, and loose there senses, so no, she couldn't swim five feet. A child can drown in three feet water.

@RockmanVX originally he was picking flowers with her.the bastards at universal felt that they needed horror.
100rocksinaboxx 1 year ago
@RockmanVX The only reasonable answer I can come up is that the little girl hit her head on a rock & drowned.
jagarcia0705 1 year ago
@RockmanVX Boris Karloff himself said it's the most disturbing scene he ever did and begged to cut that scene out.
clashrogers 1 year ago
@RockmanVX my sister almost drowned in the same type of situation *without Frankenstein of course *, she just started to panic and sink, all I did was reach out and grab her . So it was possible in my opinion. I know your comment is old but I wanted to comment anyway :P
isaveu 1 year ago
@RockmanVX i can go with the 5 feet thing. she might have never leaned to swim. what i can't buy is the villagers somehow relizingthat the creature drowned her. no one saw the creature throw her in, how the hell do they know that she did not just fall in?
clownwithoutmakeup 1 year ago
@RockmanVX here's what really bothers me in the opening creditsit says this "the creature ............?" why did they not put boris karloff's name in the opening credits
