  • video brings back memories of my younger days....some kick-ass music back then

  • I have only been to 314 VH shows. I guess their ok

  • when the "new album" and tour blows up i'll always be able to go back and watch this and discover the old VH all over again haha

  • Remember seeing this concert on MTV way back before MTV sucked?

  • @GaFishin Yes I do! lol

  • c'mon ed, released the fucking video of this concert so it can go onto dvd/blueray. the fans want it and without us, where would you be?

  • Now I know why Jeff Spicolli blew the reward money for saving Brooke Shields. I would have done the EXACT same thing!

  • got myself a brand new OAKLAND SCARF RIGHT HERE!!!! HELL YEAH!

  • listening to this (for the millionth time) really makes me realise, a VH comeback without mikey is kinda pointless

  • I think Eddie peaked, right here, on this song, at this concert. No disrespect intended. Such great improv'd licks all over the place, superb.

  • In their prime! ... and kickin ass!

They carried the rock flag through the 80's!

Never the same without Dave, sorry Sammy.

  • The harmony between Eddie and Mike was like the Beach Boys here- crucial to the appeal and songs. On this performance you have that and some unexpected comraderie between Dave and Ed which is great, then the solos and rock n out from the band. It's really amazing. Ed's playing goes from the irony of complimenting Dave with some tasteful phrasing to his vocals to the best live ripping ever in about 30 seconds! There's humor here too that makes it much more endearing most shit at the time!

  • NOW this is Rock

  • Y ES_ THEY ARE!!!!!!!!!!

  • I was at this concert this when they where at there Prime---David was a little Drunk but the Concert I will always remember..Eddie is incredible on guitar.. real music real musicians...

  • I saw them on this tour. 30 years ago this month in Buffalo. The crowd was in a frenzy for over 2 hours. It smelled like the cops had lit a grow-op on fire and I remember a good healthy ringing in my ears - the next morning! I can't wait for the new album.

  • hey kids LOOK.....it's called a BAND. they all play and have talent and listen to each other when playing and actually PLAY the SONG. they PERFORM! and they put on a a great SHOW...and/but don't forget to actually PLAY the fucking SONGS!

    lol!!

  • @mcul2112 Its nice to go to a Concert and see real music- not lip sync or turn tables, samples all that crap......ROCK----WE NEED MORE VAN HALENS.......................

  • @1banos lip sync, turn tables, samples, and bands that do everything but play music. ;)

  • I don't understand why there are only 3 songs from Live in Oakland. Unless these guys are keeping the rest of the footage under lock and key, for when they need that next big marketing product? Why hasn't this concert been released in it's entirety?!! Diver Down and 1984 made them huge!! But, I think it was Fair Warning that really put them on the map! And this was a time when bands didn't worry about "videos" or MTV. Straight Up ! Great Rock Album!!

  • EPIC = little drums and bass guitar for our friends out there, Alex

MORE EPIC = GOT MYSELF A BRAND NEW OAKLAND SCARF -- AHH YEAH!

  • Diamond dave give me a break he,s a veg..he aint got half of what sammy got..carry a tune.

  • @mash4077kb yet you come watch the vid wow shows how much a life u can dave is the king and always will be :)

  • priceless... why wonder if roth made a bad move going out of vh in 85, but for how long he kept jumping like that?! not eternally i'm sure...so difinitly he walked out in his prime; everybody knows he fucked up the words live but i didn't saw nobody jumping as much as him before... or after.

  • When you look up the word Front man in the dictionary, David Lee Roths picture is there!

  • One of the few times David was able to stay 'in sync' and remember the words. Love Van Halen.... love ya Dave.... But ya dropped the ball a few times while performing.

  • great

  • bass always kicks as much ass as guitar live! all four of em show their asses! dlr singin high Gs like theres no tomorrow!

  • is eddie the one singing in this????

  • Best Band on the Fucking Earth PERIOD

  • @kDelPrete101 I agree with you. I've seen them 15 times US Festival 83 was the first and without a doubt the greatest Rock Band in the USA !!!!!! Best band from my generation, PERIOD!!!!! Van Halen 1 to me is ONE of the greatest albums of all time.... That album can go 100 years into the future and people would say, WOW!!!! What the hell is that!!!!!! Too bad the kids today don't know shit. lol

  • the best band ever put together in my opinion

  • Man, Whan I think that I wish I were young again, well, this changes my mind!

  • I literally turned 3 when this was filmed. Seriously i have told friends if i could find a time machine id travel back to june 81 to oakland and go to this fucking show. look at my youtube name. van halen fucking crushed everything. and melted ever record in your collection!

  • @diziamonddave just awesome, dude. Just awesome.

  • @hummarstra dlr van halen is just so perfect

  • That is just 100% kick ass rock n' roll delivered by the greatest good time party band of all time, thank you Van Halen! I saw them in '84 at the Cow Palace in San Francisco, smuggled a camera in and got to Eddie's side of the stage and got some decent snaps of him layin' it down, hard core! God bless em' cause they rocked the 80's hard! I wonder if VH were coming up today if they would attain the same status as they did back then? I like to think so, ROCK ON!

  • @MidnightRambler73 i got the check mark next to stay logged in all the time jackass, when you "come looking for me" ill show you before the lights go out

  • @MidnightRambler73 Lets see, maybe my wife and kids you freaking dork? Not everyone still lives with their parents like you. Please come looking for me, just bring a dentist when you do tough guy

  • @MidnightRambler73 im not the only one who uses this computer in my household junior, just face it your soft in the ass

  • @MidnightRambler73 Jump does suck ass but I'll wait is a decent tune but its very clear you like soft\pop rock so you stick with sammy hagar and barry manilow you fucking loser and oh yeah go get our SHINE BOX!!

  • @MrBillyBatts1 ---- I like the way you slam these Hagar faggots in here......you got 'em running for Mommy........keep up the good work!

  • @MidnightRambler73 How can ANYONE call Van Hager metal? Love comes walking in? Thats not Halen man, thats sold out cheese that some 13 year old girl wants to hear. Dave didnt play that crap, your al loser now go put on some michael jackson and kill yourself ass fucking hole!

  • @MrBillyBatts1 Van Halen, isn't metal, never were and theyve said so themselves. They were/are RocknRoll! As far Sammy era goes: Get Up, Naturally Wired, Aftershock, Poundcake, Source of Infection, etc., tell me those songs arent what you call "metal". If you say they're not, we both know you'll be lying. For the record, I'm a fan of both Van Halen eras. Roth- better showman, Hagar- better singer(way better)

  • @Soldier68wCA to each and his own, i always thought Roth was easily the better singer but i guess its what you like so there is no right or wrong answer. I guess i just wish they called the band something else once they went with hager cause to me it wasnt the samething anymore. once again, my opinion

  • Just wondering when DLR is going to get a crowbar & open up his wallet and give a little to "Jim Dandy" Mangrum for "influencing" him on his stage persona??!! "Come on Dave, give me a break"!!!! Or should I say, James Mangrum, a break!!!

  • @GREATWHITE2 Used to hang out with Jim Dandy at Platinum Plus in Memphis, TN. Ahh, the billions of brain cells that were mercilessly butchered.

  • This video leaves me speechless...why has today's music fallen into a never-ending abyss???!!!!

  • jimi hendrix and evh where the last to revolutionize the face of guitar and its been a lil over thirty years and nobody has came close to evh van halen=greatest rock band always and forever

  • Van Halen is a real rock band....just pure balls and energy.

I rarely see a band to lose themselves in their performances like this.

  • Very tasty bass playing by Michael Anthony here. One of my favorite VH songs to jam out on the 4-string!

  • Ruled The Earth.

  • Ruled The Earth.

  • Love it... saw them back then....3 yrs ago and the next time they come to L.A.!!

  • Here is the easiest way to summarize Van Halen --

David Lee Roth = COOLEST ROCK GOD ALL TIME

Sammy Hagar = FAT and FUCKING USELESS

Gary Cherone = WHO DA FUCK ??

There it is --- read it and weep!

  • I gott myself brand new Oakland scarf right here! This was the best time to see these guys live....

  • I may be old, But I got to see the greatest bands.

  • @22reTOYOTA why do you talk like a child then? I bet you have never been married either.

  • Love the Old Van Halen !!!!!!

  • My God! What a band they were in their heyday! I mean, how can you not jump up and start playing air guitar like Ed or mimick Diamond Dave when you watch this?!! These days are sadly gone for VH...but at least we've got videos like this to document their golden days!

  • @EzrinJem2 I don't jump up and play air guitar now because I'm FIFTY FRIGGIN' YEARS OLD. I need a hip replacement like Eddie! LOL!

  • @EzrinJem2 So ture!! It really bugs me that Van Halen's record label Warner Brothers didn't have them as main/priority artist(s) on their label. Van Halen were & still do today sell more albums & concert tickets than the priority acts they had back then. Van Halen are your ultimate underground band that did it all by themsleves!! Its just a damn shame their record company did jack shit to push them worldwide. I hold Van Halen right along side The Beatles & Led Zeppelin as one of THE greatest!!!

  • PUT YOUR HANDS UP HERE --- I SAY !!

  • Sort of agree GeorgVanHalen...Maybe you need to check it out more though. Lots of talented bands out there. And, I mean talented! They give it their all!!! Do some research. Don't know where to get you started...it's complicated with the genres.

    :-)

  • Yes, there is spectacle, a big show here. But embedded within the razzle dazzle is some serious swing; some serious funk. Eddie's sense of phrasing is rooted in blues and flawless. The whole band is in the groove. No question about it.

  • OH SHIT I WAS AROUND 13 OR 14 YRS OLD , LOVE THE US FESTIVAL 1983/

  • @hectorcelestino This was Oakland 81 no?

  • BEST DAMN BAND EVER WHEN SOBER. DAVID LEE ROTH WAS PRETTY DAMN HARD TO BEAT WHEN HE WAS ON.....GREAT MUSIC IS DAMN HARD TO FIND ANY MORE AFTER EXPERIENCING THIS ERA...DEATH METAL..RAP...WHERE HAS ALL THE GREAT ROCK GONE?????JUSTIN BEIBER????

  • David Lee Roth: Robert Plant's stage presence with Tom Jones' voice.

  • @nyshortline David Lee Roth Was a Total Jim Dandy Nut From Black Oak Arkansas Thats Where He Got Some Of His Showman Ship

  • Haven't seen this in a while! Some of Eddie's best work in my opinion.

  • @Kingrob30 His best in my opinion!!!!

  • these guys are the best!!!! i'm a 42 yr old rocker from waaayyyy back....these guys are the greatest!!!!!!!

  • Dave's scream after the break would make James Brown proud, not many people on earth can pull that off. This is one of the most dope, under-rated jams ever

  • Roth's making the vocals is more than just sloppy. It kind of ruins an otherwise killer tune....

  • @pk42 lol in the 80's what ebay??????????? lmao

  • There's nothing like playing LIVE!!!....just the musicians and the audience--FULL PARTICIPATION...............

  • After watching this here (and LIVE in the day), and seeing shows now, a great era has truly passed.

  • @tommyrock69 I have to agree now watching them is like watching a Vegas lounge act. Sorry to say

  • @tommyrock69

NO other rock band post-Zeppelin had the chemistry these guys did.

  • DAVE IS NOT A NIGGA,....

  • michael anthony looks like, plays and moves like the fat old guy in the band...oh wait, he is!

  • @allahgoatlover yeah and his fat ass has more money and been around the world more times than you could count.

  • this is one of the greatest hard rock guitarists of all time the other was randy rhoads the late great that is

  • =VH= Hey Van Halen fans, please come join me on the new and official Van Halen Fan Club page on YouTube... I will be posting rare VH footage ranging from the club days to next year's tour! Van Halen rules!!!!

  • A friend thought Roth was Ric Flair!

  • @bigroy38 there's no way those 2 even looked da same. maybe ACT similar back in the day. Those WILD N CRAZY GUYS...

  • Eddie's playing is so confident and aggressive it's almost like jazz improvisation. It may sound dated now, but he was so out there at the time it's like he was from mars. This is probably some of the best live rock ensemble guitar playing you will ever see.

  • What's up Mike Anthony?!!Hope all is well!

  • This shows that Mike was a damn good bassist for VH, contrary to Eddie's comments every now and then.

  • Comment removed

  • @river5300 Wolfie wasn't even born yet..wtf man? you're entitled to your opin but give it a rest on these party pages ok? This is old school...whiskey and cocaine baby...fuck you if you can't hang.

  • Little did we know back in 1981 that the moon was shrinking. Today, you could take Dave's brand new Oakland scarf and wrap it around the circumference of the moon.

  • "Nigga" and Diamond Dave do not belong in the same sentence you moroon! What are you 15......Douche bag!

  • @kevrachel1 I couldn't agree more!!!

  • I won a 1982 Weekly Reader contest and Van Halen performed at my school. I could choose from Van Halen, Men at Work or Foreigner. I believe I made the right choice--even though Men at Work was probably the bigger band at the time.

  • @mrentertainment43 At the time all of them could hold thier own. You made a good choice.

  • LOOK AT THE PEOPLE HERE TONITEEEEE

  • They filmed the whole show. Eddie said he hated it. Release this as a feature length film. Re-mix the audio with pro-tools. Edit the video on a nice Mac. This was my first concert. Halifax Nova Scotia Canada. They played every city in Canada. They played 265 dates in 2 yrs. They filmed the whole show in Largo 1983 Diver Down tour too. Mix the two shows and release a movie. I bet it will be the highest grossing concert film of all time.

  • @Gordfozzfoster

This was filmed in Oakland, California, not Canada.

    I was there.

  • @sbeckius They played the same songs, same band, same show in Halifax as Oakland. I never said the video was shot in Halifax...it's obvious by Dave's rant about his Oakland scarf...I was priveledged to see this tour. I have seen the whole film...not just the 3 songs.

  • @Gordfozzfoster Brilliant. Eddie must be really picky or something like he doesn't feel they worthy. Nonsense. Somebody should just slap Eddie and take em.

  • @mrwilliamwonder On Fire and Somebody Get Me a Doctor have shown up here on Youtube from this same show in Oakland 1981 and then disappeared within hrs. I hope WB makes peace with Irvine Azoff and they tell thier Youtube goons to stop removing VH from here....and we thought Lars Ulrich was a dickhead when he went after Napster...lol!

  • @Gordfozzfoster agree with you 100%. this would be just awesome on a flat screen. then we could relive how it used to be. groups today could see it's done.

  • "so this is love?" that was my first thought when van halen hit my ears

  • EVERYBODY UP !! Fuckin awesome.. Sammy's great, but DLR era VH is the shit..

  • LOUDER PLEASE

  • Can this whole concert be purchased on DVD? This is the best Van Halen thing EVER!!

  • the early 80s just rocked!

  • I find it fitting that the still photo of this video is Michael Anthony. I wish they would give M.A. the respect he deserves and ask him back. I sincerely believe that he was an integral part of their success. I will never go see them until, or if, he comes back into the fold. Eddie needs to shed some of his arrogance and make amends.

  • Imagine being a super VH fan and witnessing this video for the first time during the eighties (I was a teen) and nearly pissed my pants when i saw this. Just excellent!!

  • Good drums, better bass. EVH. And what the fuck? Worst faggot singer in the history of rock. And a retard as far as the 21st century goes. Shocking that the VH bros could not have found a legit singer before recording their first record.

DLR is the worst human ever in rock. And the wost bit, he led to Sammy, who sucked royally.

  • @TruthAxe go somewhere else and whine

  • You amuse, @motleycrue24. Mere words whipped you into frenzy forcing you to act. Like a puppet, you danced upon the strings that I pulled.

  • @TruthAxe hahaha ya a comment

  • One of the early ones that used to air on MTV...made Jack Daniels very popular..lol...good times then..when people were not so fucking up tight...party on!

  • Music today has gone to Hell along with everything else in the world!!! Imagine that?

  • WELL SAID SLOELICK009 LOL

  • this is the best band planet "Earth" has ever had to offer...so when aliens challenge us to a battle of the bands ...we send in classic Van Halen

    rock on y'all

  • Man, this is Rock and Roll!!

  • You look up the word "AWESOME" in the dictionary --- and you see a picture of Diamond Lee's flying scissor kick at 3:13

  • I used to love this video!

"Got myself a brand new Oakland scarf right here ah yeah"

  • This was VAN HALEN ALONG WITH THE FIRST ALBUM and FAIR WARNING !!!

  • Van Halen are 4 very talented and very gifted individuals where when they put their heads together they become a foursome that's awesome to the point where it's beyond description!! They're in top form here no question. Today's pop acts need to take some lessons from these guys.

  • I wanted to play this at my wedding! Bitch wouldnt let me, thats why it didnt work out! Knew it was doomed after that...

  • rock "n" roll at it's finest!

  • The Only Band that Matters.

The Atomic Punks from Passadena California otherwise known as Van Halen.

God, they were powerful and when you attended a VH show in their prime, you got entertained by the best...

  • This is a very famous video from the MTV days when VH were at their most powerful. A perfect moment in rock and roll time. Children - pay attention...

  • 2:37

  • @bcancun123 2:37 AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHOOOOOOOO!!!

  • GOT ME A BRAND NEW OAKLAND SCARF right here.......SHEEEEIIIIIT!!!!.......ENTERTAINMAENT...TOPS!!!!

  • @adaymify Got to hear him repeat this joke a couple years ago in New Jersey. The Diamond one needs some new material.

  • 1980's Van Halen is the best!

  • old VH... nothing like it!

  • we need some drums, bas and guitar for our friends out there ! It's a shame many people today only see Van Halen (and bands alike) for their "silly clothing" and big hairs.. Van Halen among others really did some good tunes and had a spirit 10000 times better than any band today :)

  • Couldn't agree more. Just really into playing for the people and giving their all. Eddie is so sharp it's scary. This probably the "tightest" musically and the happiest emotionally.

  • @GeorgVanHalen well they wernt just a band they were a fuckin show

  • @GeorgVanHalen kidding? They dressed great as far as im concerned, its the idiots today who wear pants half way down their ass that look silly

  • Huh. Seemed to have a lot more moving lines on bass than I remembered from my youth. Then again, that ol' b&w TV probably didn't push bass out like the Bose on my computer. ;-) One of my top 3 VH songs of all time.

  • NICE TUNE

  • I think Eddie misses a chord at 3:17.

  • I love Michael's reaction at 1:23...I think it was a reaction to that ascending bass run a few seconds earlier LOL...The most grounded member of VH..

  • This is the video that got me into VH almost 30 years ago. Amazing intro groove. VH will never be the same without Michael Anthony.

  • Comment removed

  • the dutchmeister! love the way the old van halen sounds, the dutch twist on rock,.......lol, alex started out with the guitar and eddie the drums, then they switched when younger, for whatever reason, i wonder how good alex is with a guitar, - probably better than ed is with drums lol, i love pure raw rock, straightforward lyrics like 'fuck me woman' etc., not all the 'deeper meanings' of songs, that's cool too, but can also get old, it's cool to just 'rock out' ' OLD SCHOOL RULES!

  • I second that!

  • Van Halen Rules

  • NICE VID

  • Dite cio' che volete, apprezzate o non apprezzate, ma restano semore il MEGLIO del MEGLIO in assoluto. Grandi VAN HALEN...unici!!!!!

  • Never been a band that looked that gooded, sounded that good, played that good at that point in time, ever

  • There's no describing how good this band was at this point, this song is goose bump worthy even all these years on. Go VH!!

  • David Lee's acrobatic leaps still amaze us all to this day........especially the "flying scissors" and "reverse helicopter" kicks!

  • Smmmmmmmokkiinn HOT in every way!! David L Roth wrote me on facebook today and I'm still floating 3 feet off the ground..lol....amazing performer and the rest of the band.. NO WORDS could describe!!

  • The things I would do for that drum set

  • a powerfull band in there day glad i was there

  • Michael Anthony also had those amazing high pitched background vocals.

  • Yea it is not the same without him.

  • WHAT A SHOW DAVID CAN JUMP

  • We had an absolute Blast! General Seating! Everyone had a great time! You cant hold a candle to that today!

Bring a pillow if you come to America! Cause it SUCKS!

  • Actually, that was a reserved seating show. Everyone bum rushed the stage as soon as Van Halen started. I know, I was there. I graduated high school earler that day and then we hauled ass to Oakland to see Van Halen. They played three nights and we went all three.

  • In this video it's pretty obvious too, Wolfgang will never beat Michael on bass and Diamond Dave without his long hair isn't Dave anymore...

  • @MrDunkJunk Homey, you said it, Michael Anthony is a bigger part than most recognise, and cannot be replaced, he's among the top Bassist's in the world. I dont know what Wolfie is like, but i feel comfy sayin'. not like MA!!

  • ROCK ON!!

  • rofl, pkt42 Earhart disappeared in the Bermuda triangle in 1937, 54 years before the first website was introduced in 1991 of course it's BS it's a joke. It's funny as hell though.

  • That's my scarf dave is wearing. I bought it on eBay back in 1980 from Amelia Earhart. She disappeared and screwed me on the cost of shipping.

  • You bought it on eBay in 1980?? Garrr! You're old enough to know the Web didn't exist then, never mind eBay!

    FAIL!!!!!

  • @pkt42 Yup, Al Gore hadn't invented the Internet yet.

  • @DeanVX05 FYI The internet started in 1969, just wasn't public, used for all government programs.

    FAIL!

  • @MalcolmTodd1966 Uh, I was making a joke dude.

  • @MalcolmTodd1966 That's weird I thought Al Gore invented it! LOL

  • These fuckers could not be touched by ANYBAND in 1981 NO BAND in history can touch 1981 Van halen. i know folks will disagree but thats only because they are wrong....no band not 1986 METALLICA not 1981 RUSH not 1977 KISS not 1992 PANTERA not 1979 AC~DC not 1973 LED ZEPPLIN not 1981 OZZY....NO BAND EVER !!!

  • This is during the Fair Warning Tour and they were the best band anywhere!!!
