  • I like how the only one not wearing facepaint is an uncomfortable-looking Neil Innes.

  • Politically INcorrect from when we all had an unrestricted sense of humour! Love it! Good ol' Bonzo's!

  • when i pictured this song when I found it with craig ferguson, this is exactly what i expected

  • It was either the doo dah or a fine frenzy . . . dogs always win in my book.

  • And how can anyhting so silly be offensive to anyone people.... ?

  • @wolfelovesjol4evayea It isn't. You see some people go around looking for things to be offended by. Weird huh? but if you think about it. If you're offended then you can claim a moral high ground and get support and cause drama and stuff. It's sad really and belittles discrimination in general. There's no time to discuss this though, there's a monster coming!

  • Hilarious! The just don't make eccentrics like old Viv any more...

  • the first sax player looked like one of the Monkeys

  • terry jones, david jason AND THEN THE BONZO'S.... has to be a dream.

  • zombie jamboree ?

  • whiskeywowwow!!! this puppy ROCKS. THANK U MUCHO.

  • Wonderful Stuff. Taking the piss out of the George Mitchell Minstrels. M

  • There was something more boring than the Minstrel Show - that was 'The Good Old Days' - my nasty-piece-of-work Nana loved it - it nearly drove me fucking mad.

  • CraigyFerg brought me here...

  • This has to be one of the trippiest things I've ever seen. I heard this song on the Craig Ferguson show not too long ago, and I'm hooked. It's a shame the lead singer misses so much of the actual song, but still, this is crazy XD

  • i agree these guys KICK ARSE

  • They look just like real coons.

  • I can't see any racism in the blackface, but Viv's Welsh accent is hilariously offensive

  • @howardroberttrain That's supposed to be welsh?! I always wondered what it was, but welsh never crossed my mind.

  • Neil Innes clearly had an issue with it.

  • I still run all their suff through my head (for over 40 years now - - and will continue to do so

  • Oh dear! My dear colonial chums, Sorry to sound patronising. Viv would have loved all this controversy! The fact is that he was was a master at laughing at the ridiculous stupidity of everything including himself. He never, ever offended except the uninformed. This is true British irony at its best. He was not even attempting to be humorous . He had no need to. God bless those that do not understand; I respectfully ask that you look up "irony". And God (whoever!) bless you Viv. Meet again?

  • @TheAlienesque i'm only expressing my opinion on his humor, not "admiring" him.

  • they did screw up there a little.. I mean all jokes aside. what the hell where they doing? :P

  • @FlyingGold HiYa, they were doing what the Brits do best. Being silly, taking the piss and sticking the finger up at normality.

  • @stevethedrums alright. but what's that white stuff around their mouths? it just doesnt make any sense :P ..

dont get me wrong tho the weirdness of it all makes it rather amusing. :D

  • @FlyingGold The white stuff around their mouths is supposed to be stereotypical black person lips; they're attempting to look like Afro-Caribbeans through wearing classic Vaudeville minstrel show-style blackface, which is today considered incredibly racist and socially inappropriate (at least here in the US; I assume likewise for Britain).

  • This is superb vintage stuff...thanks for uploading...

  • @TheAlienesque Vivian Stanshall thinks you're a twat...

  • What is wrong with the po- faced mister Innes in this clip? - he looks like he has "spat the dummy out" about something. He fails to amuse me.

  • Can m173627 and TheAlienesque G-T-F-O off this video's comments if they're not gonna talk about Bonzo Dog Band...?

  • @TheAlienesque

Are you really still blabbering on at this? Seriously, get a life buddy

  • @TheAlienesque Del Boy

  • @TheAlienesque

Aww you went all the way to my profile to call me a "tosser?" That's cute. Is that one of your best Scottish insults?

That's right I'm a Yankee, good observation there buddy. Before you spew anymore verbal excrement, I'd like to apologize at the impossibility of the idea of you turning your life around the way Ferguson did. So if you don't like him, DON'T WATCH HIM.

WATCH OUT EVERYONE, THIS GUY IS PRETTY ANGRY. HE'LL CALL YOU A "WANKER" AND A "TOSSER!"

  • "A Touch of Frost" actor Sir David Jason is introducing this song. I feel I've come full circle.

  • @TheAlienesque

I'm sorry, I didn't realize being Scottish qualified you to speak for millions of TV viewers.

Mentor? Ferguson doesn't need a mentor nor does he have one. Try boss. They tape on opposite sides of the country. Ferguson works for Letterman's company. That has nothing to do with his comedic style, which is VERY different than Letterman.

  • @TheAlienesque Their kind of weird is great.

  • @TheAlienesque Their kind of weird is great.

  • WTF... BLACKFACE? this song is hilarious and i love it but GOD NO!

  • WTF... BLACKFACE? this song is hilarious and i love it but GOD NO! dammit dammit dammit. gross.

  • Rule Britannia,,,Britannia waives the Rules...

  • They all look like they have cummed in there mouth lol

  • @lucaelia007 You'd know

  • I've always loved the Bonzos but I never got to see them perform. They're even weirder than I thought!

  • Jesus Guys and Girls it is just having FUN by some Cool Britannians!!

    Grow up!!

  • its 6:10 A.M. I've come home wasted still and this popped up on my youtube screen.

This video scares the hell out of me! What the hells this?

  • Terry Jones~!!!

  • Neil Innes!

With class enough to not wear blackface!

  • Oh, for heaven's sake! No offence, but for those that claim racism, please look up the definition of irony.

  • This is a 1968 show from England, Called Do not adjust your set. This is the begin ning of the Bonzo Dog DooDah Band and Monty Python's Flying Circus.

  • @Dzjeek this is one of the elements that contributed to the formation of Monty Python, some of the others being the Frost Report, How to irritate people, At last the 1948 show, and the list goes on.

  • @6020e3 I know, thanks for your comment, I love and look for all pre MP and Bonzo stuff I love it all and have several video's and dvd's of all mentioned. I just don't understand why a number of people here on Youtube connect this vid with race or color. I hope they sometime will understand that humour rools (like Vambo roolz (sahb))!!!

  • @Dzjeek yeah, some guys can't have a sense of humor. stereotype humor is not prejudice.

  • what show is this?

  • @misisipimike It was called "do not adjust your set" it was kind of like monty python for kids cos it had all the stars of monty python but it was primarily a childrens t.v. show. You can get some copies on e-bay but its quite rare depending on where you live.

  • 1:23-1:26 ROFLYSST

  • I think this may have been a parody of The Spinners, a 60s English folk group which had one West Indian member and usually threw a couple of Caribbean numbers into their set, very popular on TV in their day. Viv's vocal sounds very like the Spinner's singer Cliff Hall and I suspect this is deliberate.

This particular performance appears to be inspired by contempt for the Black And White Minstrels as already suggested.

  • Neil Innes striking a blow for political correctness even back in the 60s by not doning blackface with the rest of the boys.

  • whats the akkord of the bass guitar playing so awesome.

  • Craig Ferguson? Oh, you mean Bing Hitler...

  • I guess you could still get away with blackface in the 60's. I guess that's what is happening here...

  • For the questions posed in earlier comments;

Craig Ferguson hosts the Late late show on CBS in America (The best Lte night talk shows IMHO), Geoff Peterson is his robot skeleton side-kick.

The Bonzo Dog doo-dah Band was a late 60's comedy band that is well worth seeking (warm-up band for Cream among others).

The blackface bit is intended as irony.

  • Superb, I am so pleased that I was around when music such as this was created. Please let there be a more of this, BRILLIANT

  • I think the blacked up faces were supposed to be ironic, so don't take it too seriously @SoulStatement.

  • brilliant

  • Greatest band of all time, they existed decades before I was born, shame, would kill to see them live.

  • @toxic878 They're touring reunion shows right now, but without Vivian, obviously. Seeing as how he's dead and all that.

  • Who TF are Geoff Peterson and Craig Ferguson? this is hilarious- gotta post on FB! this is about as racist as Monty Python is sexist!

  • black face

how fucking old is this shit???

  • @SoulStatement pre 70's dude!

  • the end of this song ust to scare me when i was a kid LOL

  • 1:23 WHY IS THIS SO FUNNY FOR ME!!

  • Thank You Craig Ferguson for Introducing me to this!

  • Thanks dad. Now I know why I'm so fucked up!

  • Craig shoulda picked his nose!

  • They couldn't get away with that act these days, racially insensitive, politically incorrect, etc. LOVE IT!!!

  • Hey, that was Terry Jones at the beginning there.....

  • david jason?

  • oh. dear. god.

  • Geoff Peterson!!! AWESOME!!!! Love Craig Ferguson!!!

  • Who's Geoff Peterson and why is he being referred to so many times in the comments section?

  • @InvaderJem it's craig ferguson's new sidekick. he was introduced by this song.

  • @InvaderJem I think he was one of the guys in the sketch Craig Ferguson did, using this song. The Asian horn players were much cuter than Roger and Rodney, tho.

  • did he pick his nose on purpose at 1:31? Or did he totally think no one would notice? Lmfao xD

    I just found that funny.

    btw; Geoff Peterson :D lol

  • Lovely nonsense!

  • mein gott, is that David Jason ?

  • @davidzof Yup! A very young David Jason XD

  • Absolutely fantastic. I used to go and see Do Not Adjust Your Set being made at Wembley studios as a teenager. Nothing but fun and laughter directed at all victims. It was so chilled then, why can't people chill now?

  • @Stationario because of technology which has destroyed people

  • bring back love thy neighbor eddie booth was brill,

  • And I suppose it offensive to rabbits as well when Viv dons the ears at the end. It's called satire people, a piss take off the Black and White Minstrel Show (most probably) that was mainstream viewing back in those days. To consider this racist is missing the point. It's performed in the style of a hammed up Calypso for goodness sake. Please open your minds before your mouths...The Bonzo's were at the cutting edge of Dada inspired silliness, that was the point, not to be taken literally. Duh!

  • @cottageorgan It was perhaps not a unanimous choice by the band members, judging from Neil Innes not wearing the blackface...

  • Yeah, this is really racist...

Seriously, anyone who thinks this is racist needs a sense of humour check.

  • Of course it's racist. They are poking fun at Africans and Afro-Caribbeans

.There was no limbo dancing in the B&W Minstrel Show.

  • @cwocwoc

Really? And here's silly little me thinking it was a protest against racism and stereotyping in the 1960s...

  • @cwocwoc .............your right it is racist..they should be executed for making black people like me laugh....they are of course poking fun at date agencies but then you wont see that trough your blinkered racist stupid eyes ...twat get a life before the white boy thinks we are all the same and starts putting burning tyres around our necks

  • was that Terry Jones at the beginning?

  • @takingbacksados Yes. Terry wrote for the show with Michael Palin and Eric Idle.

  • Craig ferguson is funnier than letterman

  • @IhateJohnMayer who?

  • @zachthezombie you don't know who craig ferguson is?! wow, you are missing out, my friend

  • Wonderful to see that there was no racial segregation in mid 60's Britain.

  • CRAIGS VERSION IS BETTER AN EASYR TO UNDERSTAND

  • @stormyelarasu No it's not!!

  • @stormyelarasu craig's version is just a lip synch of this exact one. so no.

  • @stormyelarasu despite what perkeleman says this is not the EXACT version craig is lip synching to.

i think this was a live broadcast made back in the 60's and the version he's lip synching to, is taken straight from the album; which why the sound quality is better.

  • It's not racist - they're taking the piss out of the Black & White Minstrel Show which was on BBC TV in the UK 'til the early eighties! It was one of the most watched shows on TV at the time - I just remember being bored shitless by it as a kid!

  • @nik418: spot on.

it also rips the piss out of the calypso music boom that happened in the UK in the mid 60s (see Lance Percival on That Was The Week That Was). Both Vi Stanshall and Neil Innes have been passed over by the mainstream in spite of both of them being rather fabulous.

  • @nik418 In America, there was "blackface" through the early 80's. The Philadelphia Mummers' parade on New Years Day is where that came from,.

  • David Jason is the host Del Boy

  • didnt they play in one of the beatles movies?

  • @Jabarichonicles yeah they're in Magical Mystery Tour and Paul McCartney as 'Apollo C. Vermouth' produced their first single - 'I'm the Urban Spaceman'.

  • I took so much acid listening to the Bonzos. Ah, good times.

  • I Am!

  • Um, racist much?

  • @KaletzibarEC Yep, it is Terry Jones. This is from Do not adjust your set, a children's programme by & with Terry Jones, Michael Palin and Eric Idle

  • i know it's not pc but i L-O-V-E the bonzos!

  • GEOFF PETERSON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @KaletzibarEC Tis the very same TJ.

  • Oh my god they are racist! Geoff is cool though.

  • Genius!

  • RIP VIv, god bless you were unique.

The bonzos were a massive influence on my life,I would rush home from school to see this prog, so embrionic for future comedy.

    Many thanks for posting

  • I <3 Geoff Peterson!

  • They're a comedy / surrealist band... they're not being racist, they're taking the micky out of the Black and White Minstrels.

  • WTF?

  • The Robot Skeleton Army has arrived!

  • Feel so privileged to have grown up watching this amazing tv (as a adolescent) :) It made me what I am today.... a Maverick

  • 1:25 0_0

  • @madpimpvince I meant 1:23 0_0

  • HOLY RACISM BATMAN!

question. wouldn't these blackfaces be inapropriate today???

  • Ditto to the Geoff Peterson visit...

  • @arun7989 me!! =D

  • YEAH GEOFF PETERSON

  • All hail the robot skeleton army!

  • yep geoff peterson

  • any one know you is this or is it a show like monty python.

  • @silverhillsjf It was a kid's show called Do Not Adjust Your set and it pre-dates Monty Python. Terry J, Eric, Michael and later Terry Gilliam worked on it. Then they joined up with John Cleese and Graham Chapman who had been working on another show called At Last the 1948 Show with Marty Feldman and Tim Brooke-Taylor. Search clips on YouTube - both are also available on DVD (some episodes anyway)

  • could someone help me out here. What does he mean by binoculars and macintosh (the song is from 60s and Macs were from 80s). Is there some other meaning?

  • @drprasad79 binoculars are glasses. A more common use of the slang is "bins". A Mackintosh has, as you've guessed, nothing to do with computers. It is in fact a raincoat. Try googling "mackintosh wiki" and it should be the second hit.

  • @TrubadurX thanks for the info.

  • @drprasad79 - yes, a macintosh in this context is a raincoat

  • To the Craig Ferguson visitors: yes, Milton Cornplaster was Terry Jones of Monty Python, and David Jason (Touch of Frost) was the announcer, in this pre-Python kid's show co-starring Michael Palin, Eric Idle and the Bonzo Dog Band (featuring on guitar Python Musician Neil Innes (you'll remember him as Robin's Minstrel in Holy Grail)

  • @graytart Thanks for the info!

  • Who's here after watching Geoff Peterson today?

  • @arun7989 Me! I was wondering if this was a real song or something Craig came up with! Too funny!

  • @arun7989 For Sure! it looks like tonight he has a few more lines lol

  • @arun7989 I am!

  • @arun7989 i am.

  • @arun7989 lol yep. Geoff Peterson Lives!!!

  • @arun7989

Geoff Peterson is my RSA hero.

CF should have tried the bit in blackface, or whatever the hell this is.

  • @arun7989 me me!!! LOL!!!!

  • @arun7989 almost everyone:) including you i guess

  • @arun7989 I had NOOO idea this shit existed! LOl...Hoorah Geoff Peterson, fuck racism.

  • @arun7989 I can't get the song out of my head! I've been watching the clip since 4/7!!! Now I'll NEVER get this out of my head; I'll have to find out everything about the Bonzo Dog Band. Who do you think does Geoff's voice, arun? I have a feeling it's that nice Mr. George Takei. But, if it is, does he need money that bad?

  • @arun7989 me

  • @arun7989 you read my mind

  • @arun7989

    lol I am hahaha

  • craigyferg!! gruntgrunt*

I'm blk I think the Bonzos are hillarious

Neil appears in blk face in an other tune/skit

4 those who think he didn't...oh yeah,

look out there's a monster cumming..

  • @mindcontrolsalsa

Exactly - not a shred of racism in them - just humour :D

  • The Bleedin Fuzzies were Bonzo Fans, check out Monster Beach onUtube

    /watch?v=9HeEFxgktVg

  • Hello everybody.

I'm just discovering the Bonzos, can someone please point to who is who in this video? Thanks.

  • You've got the High Vivian Stanshall on lead vocals and trumpet there, Neil Innes on guitar, Roger Ruskin Spear on Tenor sax, Rodney 'Rhino' Slater on the other sax, Vernon Dudley Bohay-Nowell on bass and 'Legs' Larry Smith on drums. If you listen to the Intro and Outro song, then you'll hear some of their names at the beginning.

  • Super!

Yeah I've heard the Intro and Outro songs (Hitler on xylophone! lol), but I wanted to picture them. Though its not like this is the perfect video for this!

    Thanks!

  • @psirou Actually, I think it's Dave Clague on bass.

  • just love them.

    R.I.P Vivian.

  • This song used to scare the crap out of me when I was a kid. Good old LSD huh!

  • Me too!

  • for a dollar they arrange a meeting? to cut down my weight off comes my left leg!

This is a prelude to Rawlinsons End?

WHAT GENIUS! WHAT TALENT! High Vivian Stanshall on Trumpet

  • People people, one must remember when posting that it was a diffrent world back then. as incorrect as it may be it is still funny. My god Nathan Lane is so young, and still delicious

  • @VolvoCub That's not Nathan Lane.... Lane was born in 1956.... That's actually David Jason.

  • @presleylennon lol I realised that, but I lost how to correct it here. but het sure kinda looks like him. lol blush
