I think this may have been a parody of The Spinners, a 60s English folk group which had one West Indian member and usually threw a couple of Caribbean numbers into their set, very popular on TV in their day. Viv's vocal sounds very like the Spinner's singer Cliff Hall and I suspect this is deliberate.

This particular performance appears to be inspired by contempt for the Black And White Minstrels as already suggested.

Then they joined up with John Cleese and Graham Chapman who had been working on another show called At Last the 1948 Show with Marty Feldman and Tim Brooke-Taylor. Search clips on YouTube - both are also available on DVD (some episodes anyway)
