the funny thing is,the series is so famous in Iran but in Australia nobody i've seen even know about it, and they don't know about real John and Mary. I just saw an image of their family gathering in jail Museum. Anyway the series and its characters are awesome. thank you for the clip...good memories
Wow, that's an amazing song. <3 I really want to see the series - my parents said it was great. It doesn't seem to be available in South Africa, maybe it's somewhere on DVD in Australia...
Wonderful memories, I played the thief that stole Mary's and Jonathon's cows in the final episode "Windfall Summer", and yes I still feel guilty! but I feel very proud to have been part of such a great milestone in Australian television history.
"Against The Wind", What a truly outstanding piece of Australian drama! Loved it as a kid, and again later as an adult, fascinated by our remarkable (and turbulent) history and culture!
I've always loved this song... been a fav of mine since I was knee height of a grasshopper... couldn't find it on iTunes... anyone know where I can d/load it?
Remember seeing this show as a kid, spent years looking for it on dvd, got it eventually 2yrs ago, was wonderful watching it again. Should show it again on tv.
Well..this song is fantastic! And tv-serie also...it feels like yesterday, when i watch this serie in tv..sometimes 70;s.John English sings magnificent.
I'm a huge beatles fan and i can honestly say either lennon or mccartney would have been proud to have written such an austerely beautiful piece as jon has.
@jennifer5363 Yellow probably the sun, brown the earth, blue the water and green the forest, but red I cannot tell... Just would make sense, wouldnt it?
Im born in the 90's and still decided to watch this increddible serie. It probably the best i've ever seen. I think they should re send it on television now. Just as they did with Macgyver.
I bumped into John English two years ago in Melbourne, he and Patrick Swayze were my first crushes and I actually spoke to him. All I can say is that he was supernice but jeez, he has been on a 3 pack a day diet and it shows. Still, he is awesome. Even gave me a ciggie.
I love this song but it bugs me that they only count up 5 colors, when it's 6 ribbons. For a while I thought they sang Yellow, White, Brown but they certainly sing yellow and brown.
I saw the series, this weekend for maybe the fifth time since I bought it on DVD. I first saw it when I was around twelve (in 1998) when the Swedish tv-station showed it once again :)
Every time I see the series I fell inlove with Jonathan :) Such a cute story, but at the same time very terrifing!
MI EPIDERMIS DESGASTADA POR TANTAS BATALLAS PERDIDAS MIS NEURONAS HABITADAS POR TANTO CONOCIMIENTO INUTIL Y SUBVERSIVO Y MI ALMA ICONOCLASTA PROCLAMAN SOLEMNEMENTE; QUERERTE SIN AMBIGUEDADES, SIN CODIGOS SECRETOS, SIN NOSTALGIAS; Y SIN CLAUSULAS OCULTAS. No Australian of Irish descent hates Ireland, it wasn't the Irish who sent thousands of starving peasants to the colonies for misdemeanors such as stealing a loaf of bread to feed their children.
I am a fourth generation Australian and I am proud of my Irish heritage, I agree people should treat people with decency. Look to the mistakes of the past and dont allow them to happen again.
Oooh I loved this programme when it was coming and this song....so special song straight to the heart, I wish somebody could get this on youtube <3 <3
oh, i remeber this from when i wasyoung, and the tv series it came from was massive at the time. it was called "against the wind". i don't think the song ever made it to no 1. in australia, but i think it did in somewhere in scandinavia...not sure though...it's one of those songs that prompts memories of faces, rooms and even feelings (well, for me at least). lovely.
I absolutely love this song. I remember watching it when I was 5...in South Africa. I feel that this song symbolises true love. Pure, untainted by the material world and deep.Very haunting and brings a tear to my eye.I wish that I could find this type of love.Don't think it exists.
of course it does :o) it's just harder to see it.. in a way, they were happier than us.. they had hard lives, hard work, they couldn't travel or talk to people oll over the world, but they hat time to appreciate the simple things like having a little house to live in and a loving family around :o)
I guess, it has everything to do with the fantasy of me living in a forest and having a woodcutter for a husband. I grew up on a farm and saw this type of love between my parents...long for it.
Those australians can really make wonderful series, one of the best I've seen, with its' interesting characters. If this movie was made in USA it hadn't been so good. The irish-australian dialect is very beautiful/ Dessa australiensare kan verkligen göra underbara serier. En av de bästa jag sett, pga sina intressanta karaktärer. Jag tror inte att amerikanarna hade kunnat göra något så bra. Den irlänsk-australiska dialekten är fin att lyssna till. Avnjut den vänner / Enjoy it friends!
Wow - I remember this series, and I couldn't have been more than 5 years old or so when it first aired on the ABC. I remember my sister playing her guitar and singing this song. Such a beautiful, sweet memory - so long ago - but seeing this video brings it all back. This song used to make me sad - and now it makes me cry - but I think it is because the lyrics are so humble and haunting. Timeless...I must buy that DVD!! Thanks for posting this!! :-)
this song is so real. the sound, the lyrics, and jon english's voice... wow... music doesnt get much better than this. if this was the last song i ever heard, i could hamdle that... timeless, emotional, brilliant.
Remember watchin' it as a kid in Oz. The song has stayed with me ever since. BUt finding it here reminded me what I'd forgotten, that Jon's voice and the way this was recorded was absolutely hauntingly PERFECT.
THANK YOU SO MUCH I haven't seen this since I was a kid...it was an awesome series...it's a shame Aussie kids don't learn about our history....sweet song.my bro's friend played flute Laura Chislett i think, ...most of those actors are still about in Australia...cool...thanks
I went to my loves' final resting place and played/sang her this song. She would of loved it I know. I will bring her 6 ribbons when I see her again. Until then, rest in peace my love.
It's great - with fine actors - not fast paced though, but that's no problem, since it gives the characters time to develop, unlike most of the crap that is on TV these days ;-)
( was made in 1978, but has stood the test of time really well, I think ).
I am self taught so I'm not good. Passable for my love. She would listen to my attempts to get it right then one day after a few simple changes to suit I got it! I play in minor chords, e minor the start chord if that helps you. But this version is the finest love song of all, for me anyway.
I play classical guitar, so I don't really use chords like that. More like "pizzicato", you know, the thing that's going on in the background. I have kinda made my own version of it too, since the original is quite tricky, even though it's for beginners. But I'll keep on trying until I fully get it, it's worth it.

This video and your story truly inspired me to try and learn to understand the song. I think I can give much more to it now... I think of nostalgic memories, aspiration, feeling forgotten or left behind or inferior. But at the same time this song makes me feel very happy. It's like tears and a smile. Playing this has started to help my uneasy feelings a little... my guitar creates a little rainbow.
Yes, I know what you mean. I shed so many, many tears for my lost love. This song brings back so many memories of her. My guitar builds a bridge for me to cross over to her and she is there waiting for me. Then I am happy. May all your days be filled with happiness.
I play this song for my late wife. We both loved the series against the wind and Jon English was one of our favorites. Now, every year since her passing I play it for her.
I love playing this song, it's one of my favourites. It's downright stunning. Jon English has such an incredible voice, love it, just love everything about this song.

Mary Larkin was a lovely girl who used to be on British tv quite a lot in the
1970,s .
She had a lovely , natural face,
in complete contrast to the botoxed plastic dollys that grace our screens
these days.
Against The Wind was an excellent series.
They don,t make them like that anymore do they?
