Formidably stupendous! Somehow this excellent 1936 recording captures "Young" Toscanini. Although even in advanced old age he was typically amazing and rigorous.
Have you heard Sir Thomas Beecham's stereo recording of this movement? That's music making! I've always thought this Toscanini recording was brutal and overrated. Felix Weingartner, Guido Cantelli and Carlos Kleiber are also marvelous in this music.
@FMMAROTO Very perceptive comment. Toscanini is revelatory. In the same way that Furtwangler reveals in Wagner what that man and composer was trying to say and communicate, so Toscanini adequately, and with non-egotistic control, convincingly communicates what Beethoven was saying in what he had notated in written symbols. I am left saying:"How obvious it is."
Nice to hear -2- geniuses Ludwig and Arturo - what magnificent music and
interpretation.
Thanks for posting-John

In the hands of Toscanini this symphony is really a rock-symphony, as it must be. Unique!

What is amazing how Toscanini kept the tempo gradually accelerating ALL THROUGH A DISC CHANGE!!!!
The level of concentration required for something like that must've been phenomenal.

So awesome. I still consider this the best 7th although I now place Carlos Kleiber a close second with Otto Klemperer a close third.

Worst recording of the 7th ever, except for Klemperer. Beethoven was definitely not Toscanini's cup of tea, he slaughtered all 9 symphonies.

Best recording ever of the 7th! Klemperer an honest second place - everyone else back-in-the-pack.

@HickysBoy I like Kleiber better.

BRAVOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Absolutely and pure genious: starts slow, and gets faster. It obviously what Beethoven wanted!! Never thought of that while hearing Karajan.
