I'm pretty socially left-wing, but I've always enjoyed Buckley. I don't think he's a major intellectual, though; he's just a very gifted conversationalist. (Often, when he makes points, he adopts an affected tone that seems to try and cover up his intellectual patchiness.) I could see him having a big gay fanbase, because he's such an animated character. That smile is positively Joker-esque.

He also criticised Bush very harshly with regard to the Iraq war, and said that it was the beginning of the end for American conservativism that it followed Bush so slavishly when he deviated from classical conservative principles. Basically, he credited Bush and those aligned with him for ruining American conservativism. He can't have liked Bush THAT much.

I met it during the Seventies, it was an occasion memorable that. I always indifferent in the policy, but found interesting to him mainly because of his voice and in his manner of speaking, all two the very attractive ones with me. I familiarized myself then with English (I am now an expert). an interesting man.
Buckley was an incredible mind who stood for true conservatism in a time when it was popular for Republicans to adopt more liberal policies and mindsets. Naysayers may belittle his views but Firing Line certainly gave testimony to the fact that America thought they were worth listening to.

He also criticised Bush very harshly with regard to the Iraq war, and said that it was the beginning of the end for American conservativism that it followed Bush so slavishly when he deviated from classical conservative principles. I met it during the Seventies, it was an occasion memorable that. I always indifferent in the policy, but found interesting to him mainly because of his voice and in his manner of speaking, all two the very attractive ones with me. If you are referring to neocons, I would argue that they are not really conservatives. Rather they benefited from the road paved by the great Buckley and have hijacked the cause for their own personal ends. There is no theft or stealing going on. What is immoral is not getting the healthcare you need because you can't afford it, which is the case with millions of Americans. Then even if you have insurance, many companies make excuses for not paying out. Also, when you factor the huge cost of health insurance premiums for a typical family, it costs more to pay premiums than to pay taxes if we had a 'universal system'! Canada and the Euro nations are way ahead of us morally on this one!

i'll take living in america over germany any day of the week, as well as our healthcare. It's easy to gloss over the weakness of socialized medicine, and to let america foot the bill for pharm's reasearch and development, and then demonize america and coportations for higher prices. It takes an understanding of economics to not, which it's obvious you don't have. Not to mention equating standard of living to vacation time..

I cried after viewing this wonderful collection of interviews with Mr. Buckley. I was just out of high school when I first was introduced to Firing Line; and was immediately bitten by the conservative bug. Now at 59 I am all the more grateful for having been exposed to such a great mind. Thank you, Charlie for sharing.
