Because at this time Jason Mewes was really struggling with his drug addiction, to the point where he had to attend rehab or face a jail sentence, in fact he even broke out of rehab a couple of time. But he finally knocked his drug problems on the head later that year (2003). Say what you will about Smith's filmmaking abilities, you have to hand it to him for his candour when speaking to his public.
