@WindyCityJazz Kenny G may not be as good, but in a commerialised way, he is a legend in his own right. At least his music resonates in a commerialized manner and in a main stream situation. I love the legends you named, but i feel there is no need to put Kenny down just because in terms of skills he is nowhere near them. In terms of mainstream appeal they are nowhere near Kenny. So why the argument? To each his own. No need to put any musician down.
@eclecticderby Real jazz musicians aren't concerned with popular appeal. Nobody goes into jazz thinking that they're going to become popular and make a lot of money. Jazz is about individuality - having your own sound and doing your own thing. I'm not putting the guy down, I'm merely saying that his music isn't jazz, which is true, and that unlike the argument that a lot of people are using on here, popularity is not a measure of somebody's skills.

I don't like this - sound like a snake charmer's pipe to me. He's just playing the tune with a few grace notes here and there, and chromatic runs. Dave Sanbourn tops him anytime. This is indeed shopping mall stuff.
There is no doubt in my mind that Kenny G is a very talented saxophone player. He has really distinguished himself on soprano sax. But I don't consider him to be a jazz musician because he chooses such bland, generic background rhythms-- this piece is a good example--and he restricts his improvisation to "noodling" around the melody for 4 bars or so. I love playing this piece, and it is not difficult to improvise around the chords for an entire verse.

Basque was spoken in all of Europe as a common language, because almost all the population of Europe had migrated from the Sahara when the formerly productive land became a desert .New cults from Anatolia, all of them promoted male domination. Priests were sent all over Europe with orders to destroy the ancient religion of the Goddess, create nations, and invent new languages for each new nation.Every language had to be based on the basque language because there was no other from which to work
This is just boring, in my opinion. Is his instrument incapable of playing more than one scale? He doesn't really explore this tune at all. Miles, Ella, Bird, so on and so forth all do this song SO much more justice. Read Pat Metheny's critique of Kenny G.
@ederrick987 What is that supposed to mean? That white people can't play jazz? There are black "smooth jazz" players out there as well, and guys like Stan Getz, Gerry Mulligan, Art Pepper, Phil Woods, and countless others sure as hell could play jazz!
Kenny Kenny Kenny......first heard him in 1993. My grandma was playing his music and I was 13 at the time. Dude can blow as we African Americans say....still buying his music till this day....Yes this white boy can get down with the best of them and at that blow them away.....give credit when credits due......
@kansas024 I agree and I bought this CD 11 years ago. Still one of my favorites. I don't care what everyone else thinks. He does an awesome job covering these classics.
look at the likes and dislikes of this vid, most of the people of the world like "pop" and things that.... suck.... Thats the truth and no one can change it... at least not in this generation.... though we can all try to make people KNOW what is Jazz..
@rockstardj89 Sorry, bro. I get my music other ways than through the boob tube. My God this pop society makes me want to throw up all over my stereo system.
a lot of kenny g hate. i dont think he's the best, but this is a great song. when i first heard it i thought, "no, this cant be kenny g". props to him on this one
what's wrong with laid back jazz, it makes you sit back and think about life. enjoy the music and stop bitchin, we are all one with music it is the only true unity people share that's why it makes no sense to argue over music! just sit back and listen to it, if you like it, otherwise why not go listen to something you like instead of wasting your time down talking another for what, how, or why they are doing something..
I'm reading these comments and they are quite interesting. I am a young saxophonist (15) and I aspire to be a professional musician one day. I really like Kenny G. I think he has a great tone in my opinion and good taste, yet everybody seems to hate him. Could somebody enlighten me? I would love to see why people don't like his work. =)
@Meeshdongles your in the same postion as me. let me tell you from experiance and exploring other styles that kenny G's way of playing is not even close to the sense of style that John Coltrane,Charlie Parker, and many others established as what is traditional jazz. Kenny G simply evolved the style to meet today's needs, which is a laid back, reinvention of jazz music. Old jazz pursuits need to accept the fact their music is dead and move on. Kenny G redefined jazz weather they like it or not!
PD to wiliscool: you can try to practice 4 hr/day, and in 40 years you won't get to where he is now. Trust me it's 8 hr/day, 365 days/year and more than 20 years of hard work to get the technic, and that is worth of respect.
He's the best saxphone player ever! End of discussion. I don't know if he is a jazz player, but that doesn't matter for me. As a saxphoner myself I can appreciate how good he is with this instrument. Those who says that everyone can get his technic should try to do the same by himself and will see how hard it is to make those notes in place and in sense.
Kenny G has regressed jazz in my opinion, especially its public image. When I mention jazz to my friends, they think of Kenny G's sharp noodling over synth pads and programmed drums playing in an elevator, not the roar of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, not the Basie Big Band's shout choruses, not Miles Davis' gorgeous, lyrical improvisation. He isn't a bad musician, but he doesn't deserve the recognition he recieves. Guys like Chris Potter, Brian Blade and John Scofield should.
@guitarhero343 That is because Kenny''s audience is NOT the seasoned jazz listener. But more of the casual, tame-like kind of person. He has recognition and fame because he has learned to adapt his sound to the likings of the public, which makes him a successful Jazz-like-Pop musician. The others get their deserving recognition and maybe later as years pass they will be more critically recognized, who knows. However, in terns of "deserving" is more of a subjective matter
@guitarhero343 i think the most important thing to keep in mind is that jazz does not regress if mainstream cultures does not learn to appreciate it-- jazz is and will never be mainstream, and yes i do not consider kenny g's music jazz. kenny g made his own music and jazz will have its own. as for the the mainstream masses who don't appreciate jazz and misconstrue kenny g with kenny garrett or only know louis armstrong as that black old guy who sang "what a wonderful world," well, f'ck them.
@guitarhero343 I definitely agree that Kenny G isn't the same type of jazz. I think he's (smartly) gone about finding his own niche and filling it. Your argument about Kenny G regressing jazz could be applied to many artists in all kinds of genres from country to rock to pop. For elevator music - Kenny does some really good stuff. After all, I've heard MUCH worse than this. It's just not everyone's cup of tea.
Why is there not enough space for Kenny g and the likes of whom you quote
he plays the Sax as well as he can but has not asked anyone to stop listening to the greats
Why does he not deserve the recognition?????
Im not mad about kenny but I love his contribution.. as well as ,many others . I think liking the " Old school" Jazz is fine but does not make Kenny any less worthy
All who dabble into smooth Jazz funk can be similarly accused. They have made Jazz persist IMHO
@guitarhero343 I sort of agree with what you're saying, EXCEPT you cannot fault Kenny for the laziness of the masses not delving deeper into Jazz in its purist and original form. Kenny is very good at what he does and if people choose it over Miles, charlie, Billie, etc, so be it, but it's their LOSS.
@guitarhero343 like im saying again Kenny g has his own style witch you cant compare it to miles Davis, Dexter Gordon and many more, now when other people think of jazz they probably think of Kenny g but they don't listen to jazz or study it, but Kenny g is a smooth jazz artist, other musicians think that Kenny cant play, well he can, he could probably play like Coltrane if he wonted to but he enjoys playing his own style an being a performer, and hes one of the most riches saxophonist 2
well i dunno why you all ppl argue about Kenny G..ive never heard of him in the past personally but this version is extremely good and thats what matters
As a jazz enthusiast, Iam not a really Kenny G fan for what he did... I dont really consider him a good jazz player, but hes famous thats it. I like this song, I dont care for his skills or poor improvisation. This just sounds good, so I give it a go. Even when I dont like him in persona.
This guy over dubbed Louis Armstrong!....(what nerve)
He is the Bernie Madoff of jazz...
Most of his fans aren't even avid jazz fans.....
His range is poor mainly playing of pentatonic scales....
People please listen to real Jazz, like UniverisityofMunich said This is the McDonalds of Jazz, low quality, commercialized, low grade, indigestible, and many other horrible things.
Wake up to the reall Jazz and you will be inspired!
Nice but Miles Davis version is a classic. For those listeners old enough to care about the soul of musical piece. Like comparing Chaka Khan to what passes for pop singers today.

I'm not putting the guy down, I'm merely saying that his music isn't jazz, which is true, and that unlike the argument that a lot of people are using on here, popularity is not a measure of somebody's skills.

nitrorev386 7 months ago

There are black "smooth jazz" players out there as well, and guys like Stan Getz, Gerry Mulligan, Art Pepper, Phil Woods, and countless others sure as hell could play jazz!

what's wrong with laid back jazz, it makes you sit back and think about life. enjoy the music and stop bitchin, we are all one with music it is the only true unity people share that's why it makes no sense to argue over music! just sit back and listen to it, if you like it, otherwise why not go listen to something you like instead of wasting your time down talking another for what, how, or why they are doing something..

it's secret :P but do y really care?
great song :)
bonieklbn1988 1 year ago
@Meeshdongles your in the same postion as me. let me tell you from experiance and exploring other styles that kenny G's way of playing is not even close to the sense of style that John Coltrane,Charlie Parker, and many others established as what is traditional jazz. Kenny G simply evolved the style to meet today's needs, which is a laid back, reinvention of jazz music. Old jazz pursuits need to accept the fact their music is dead and move on. Kenny G redefined jazz weather they like it or not!
TheSaxMaster100 1 year ago
PD to wiliscool: you can try to practice 4 hr/day, and in 40 years you won't get to where he is now. Trust me it's 8 hr/day, 365 days/year and more than 20 years of hard work to get the technic, and that is worth of respect.
tinkavon 1 year ago
He's the best saxphone player ever! End of discussion. I don't know if he is a jazz player, but that doesn't matter for me. As a saxphoner myself I can appreciate how good he is with this instrument. Those who says that everyone can get his technic should try to do the same by himself and will see how hard it is to make those notes in place and in sense.
tinkavon 1 year ago
Kenny G has regressed jazz in my opinion, especially its public image. When I mention jazz to my friends, they think of Kenny G's sharp noodling over synth pads and programmed drums playing in an elevator, not the roar of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, not the Basie Big Band's shout choruses, not Miles Davis' gorgeous, lyrical improvisation. He isn't a bad musician, but he doesn't deserve the recognition he recieves. Guys like Chris Potter, Brian Blade and John Scofield should.
guitarhero343 1 year ago 46
@guitarhero343 I don't think Chris Potter is all that....
eet73 1 year ago
@eet73
but I'd rather listen to Chris Potter than Kenny G
GDelva2003 1 year ago
@guitarhero343 That is because Kenny''s audience is NOT the seasoned jazz listener. But more of the casual, tame-like kind of person. He has recognition and fame because he has learned to adapt his sound to the likings of the public, which makes him a successful Jazz-like-Pop musician. The others get their deserving recognition and maybe later as years pass they will be more critically recognized, who knows. However, in terns of "deserving" is more of a subjective matter
dkjose5000 1 year ago
@guitarhero343 i think the most important thing to keep in mind is that jazz does not regress if mainstream cultures does not learn to appreciate it-- jazz is and will never be mainstream, and yes i do not consider kenny g's music jazz. kenny g made his own music and jazz will have its own. as for the the mainstream masses who don't appreciate jazz and misconstrue kenny g with kenny garrett or only know louis armstrong as that black old guy who sang "what a wonderful world," well, f'ck them.
freighter014 1 year ago
@guitarhero343 I definitely agree that Kenny G isn't the same type of jazz. I think he's (smartly) gone about finding his own niche and filling it. Your argument about Kenny G regressing jazz could be applied to many artists in all kinds of genres from country to rock to pop. For elevator music - Kenny does some really good stuff. After all, I've heard MUCH worse than this. It's just not everyone's cup of tea.

@guitarhero343
They have made Jazz persist IMHO
s3enu 9 months ago 2
@guitarhero343 I sort of agree with what you're saying, EXCEPT you cannot fault Kenny for the laziness of the masses not delving deeper into Jazz in its purist and original form. Kenny is very good at what he does and if people choose it over Miles, charlie, Billie, etc, so be it, but it's their LOSS.
UrlsGrrl54 8 months ago
@guitarhero343 like im saying again Kenny g has his own style witch you cant compare it to miles Davis, Dexter Gordon and many more, now when other people think of jazz they probably think of Kenny g but they don't listen to jazz or study it, but Kenny g is a smooth jazz artist, other musicians think that Kenny cant play, well he can, he could probably play like Coltrane if he wonted to but he enjoys playing his own style an being a performer, and hes one of the most riches saxophonist 2
