It would be hard for me to keep a straight face during these briefings I think. Id be thinking on my sim I dont even use checklists. Whens lunch? Im gettin hungry. be sort of Chevy Chase style
very nice vid. thorough brief. sometimes we do not have the luxury of time to do a full throrough one, but when there is time, such a throrough brief is very good airmanship, says my humble opinion :)
i have 14000hrs experience on short/long haul as a capt.........what verbal vomit. In a real situation you will have engineers/cabin crew/red caps coming into the cockpit so time management is of the essence. To complete this brief as above the aircraft would never depart and yes I'd give her one.
That was excruciating. You could cover the pertinent points in 50 seconds not 5 minutes. If you can't remember the main points of the briefing now then that just demonstrates how useless it was. Primacy and recency.
My brother is a meteorologist so he uses the NWS and NOAA websites which are perfect for everything he needs, i tell him that he has a great website, we have poorly acted instructional videos ahahah, but we do need these so I can't complain.
Are these people under-confident, under-achievers or just afraid of flying? The reason for training systems and SOP's is to avoid the rubbish spouted by the goon in the LHS. Unless of course, this was an example of "how not to do brief". Only the last 20-30 seconds of the brief will be remembered, therefore 4minutes, 20 seconds was wasted effort and contributed nothing to the safety of this flight.
@austintm: Only the last 20-30 seconds of the brief will be remembered,
If a brief like this is repeated often enough....it will be remembered....and since these two are obviously flying mainline jets, chances are they have lots of practice. They are highly experienced professional pilots and are very good at multi-tasking. Don't worry, they will remember the briefing. The ones who don't have the right stuff end up in a smoldering pile at the point of impact.
@austintm: Only the last 20-30 seconds of the brief will be remembered,
JM: But for the record, pilots I know don't do this briefing in the cockpit, they do most of it before they get out to the aircraft. By the time they plunk down in the seat, they've already looked into most of this information. And they DO look into ALL of this information. They educate themselves so that they might anticipate and be prepared...yet remain ready to handle the fluid flight-ops environment. 4:20 is long?
@JetMechMA Below355 has got is right. Briefings like this have place on any professional flight deck. The obvious items don't need to be discussed and only the non-standard out of the ordinary need to be covered. Remember, where this section finishes, they haven't even briefed the departure brief nor the nav-aid set up. The performance was glossed over and the belief that they can blast straight up to 12,000', engine out is amazing and perform a TCAS RA at the same time is almost frightening.
@austintm: Briefings like this have place on any professional flight deck.
JM: Wait....this is an FAA video, isn't it? Lets see now, it takes about 5 to push back and start....another 5 or 10 to get to "line up and wait" (I hate that terminology) That's what?....15, 20 minutes tops? So the CVR is going to have your briefing on it should anything go wrong on take-off, right? Do what you gotta do sir. It's your ticket.
F*ck me, its called a BRIEF for a reason. Most of the stuff he discusses should be SOP policy for a company. If I briefed like that, I would have expected the First Officer to fall asleep after the first minute.
Keep it pertinent and follow a set briefing template.
This is a Boeing 737. Oh this guy is talking a lot to the nice first officer. I didn't know that there are so nice ladies in the cockpit of American airliners. Here in Russia there are only guys, but sweet Flight Attendants. By the way, perform a Takeoff Briefing in a TU-154 with four crew members (Commander, Co-Pilot, Navigator, Flight Engineer). That is funny. Okay the most airlines in Russia do not have any CRM, but we do a takeoff briefing :)

Way way too long and yes she will need to take her clothes off in the event of any major malfunction after 80 knots
rananim3 1 year ago
@rananim3 I cannot believe you said that, I mean come on what are the chances of a major malfunction in a modern airliner?
I believe a better approach would be to have her do that to let me know when its safe to put the gear up.

Dear All,
I have some questions about psychology:
Why do we want to be a pilot? Why do jobs related to aviation considered to be more professional?
This kind of preception was more obvious in 1960s.
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE for your creative ideas and brainstorms. :)
