great video, but i need to correct you on one thing- ITS NOT JUST FOR BEGINNERS! Lol. I've been working out for years, and i just started p90x..by the end of the workouts that require pull ups, trust me, im using the chair for a little help lol
Hi Danielle, i am wondering about pull ups / chin ups, i had back surgery 2 years ago, and never fully recovered, the dr tells me that i am clear to work out, i have no limitation (but i still have back pain) the pull ups and chin ups are supposed to be good for the back, right? are there any special instructions or cautions i should know about?
@DanielleDWPB - Hi Danielle! I really needed someone to tell me something about pull ups. I weigh 176lbs (80kg) and i basically powerlift. I want a big back to assist me in my bench press. I have a problem with pull ups.. in the sense I always get 10 to 12 reps. ALWAYS!!! never improve.. I try for 13 to 15 but will NEVER get them. So what do u suggest? shall I add weight and stay in the same rep range or is there anyway to improve my rep range? I think you're the right person I to ask. Thanks!
I agree with everyone who says do negatives instead, the negative part of any movement/lift causes mega-damage (the good kind) to muscles. I went from not being able to budge myself an inch on the pull up bar to doing my first pull up ever after 2 weeks of negatives. That was less than a year ago, my personal best right now is 11 in a row.
@13andincrediblycut HOLY CRAP... i am 13 and i can't do any... dame, watch me rise tho... since i could only do 1 push up b4 and now i can do 60 so watch me catch up to you, even tho i don't know you... I LOVE CHALLENGES :)
@pokerockman There is very little comparison with pull ups to push ups.
Pull ups are much HARDER than just push ups....Which most people can manage at least half of one(push up)with some minimal practice, unless they're overweight or very weak.
Now with pull ups very few people will be able to do 1 complete dead-hang one using no momentum in their first try. VERY FEW!
@pokerockman Well nice analysis, but I will correct one mistake you made; pull ups are not mainly biceps that are mainly used with your lats(see more on lats at Google). Of course you do use your biceps more in chin ups with your palms facing you. But they are shunned out mainly in pull ups leaving most of the work to your lats(which run along your back).
And you mean you can't do one pull-up from dead hang(arms completely straight)?
You said you could do 60 push ups? That's done in a plank position, so 60 push ups at 129lbs is equivalent to a bench press of 60lbs 60 times, rough estimate. :)
@pokerockman THAT MOTHER FUCKING SON OF A BITCH IS LYING! HE LIES ON EVERY FUCKING LIFTING VIDEO! HE CANT LIFT FUCKING SHIT AND HES REALLY FUCKING SMALL! AND HIS DICK IS ONLY 2 INCHES HARD AND HES A FUCKING LOSER PSYCHO FUCK HEAD!
@pokerockman Well I'm not really that big(and don't listen to that GAKRAC he's a psycho who threatened to kill me via email and a crazy troll)I'm more lean and firm not bulky barely at all.
Secrets? Well for pull ups the only secret I know is constant adaption over time to be able to fully take physical control over your body. This means that, if you fail to do one pull up from dead hang, the only way to be able to reach that potential is by forcing yourself every time to do it that way until
@pokerockman You can do one from dead hang. I know the word "force" can vary. But always remembering to hang as far down as possible and using as much pulling resistance as possible every time gets your body slowly adapted to the capability of working under 100% dead hang. This being so, your body must change. If you can do many pull ups/chin ups but not from dead hang you'll need to make a change. To do dead hang and dead hang only you must ONLY do dead-hang ones. Chin ups from dead hang help!
Do you think it would be better for a beginner (like myself) ,to just start off doing reg. pullups and work my way up from there ? It seems like the muscles being worked will adapt quicker . What's your take on that ?
Hi Friend, good question. If you can do regular pullups, then by all means, do them. The Assisted Pullup option is provided for those beginners that don't currently have the upper body strength to do regular pullups. It is a way to help work and develop the muscles that will ultimately allow them to do unassisted pullups.
Hello to you friend :-) .... I can do maybe 3/4 pullups between sets. 5/6 sets (I know that sucks lol) , but do you think the upper body strength will adapt better/quicker at doing more assisted vs. the small amount
with out ? I try to do both but it seems like I'm confusing the muscles .
@cirethgr8 What she's doing is a great idea.I'm a 90kg man & I get pain in a ligament (or tendon or whatever the hell it is) around my left elbow when I try to do reg. pull ups (palms facing away from me).Other big guys at the karate club have the same problem. And for this reason I've given up reg. pull ups (though it goes fine with palms facing toward me; I can do sets of 6 on a good day). So, I might try to find a way to lessen the weight, like she shows, to make a more gradual start.
I tried this way and I found that I cheated to much. I didn't work. the method in your other video was better. I came up with it myself but it's good to see other people use ti too.
Very good video! I love Pull ups!

@13andincrediblycut LOL... watched the vid again and i found out that if i don't lock my elbows at the start i can do 1 :D
and push ups = Triceps
Pull ups = Biceps
if your triceps are strong you can do a push up, same with a pull up :D hope i helped u.
