@MrJoeyGregan thats what hes doing hes attacking the the strings the only difference is that the attacking sound for the bass gives it the metal tone and distortion gives the guitar the metal tone

@dh152004 not sure what you mean by metal tone but if you either mean brightness or dirt, they're achieved with strings and overdrive or distortion, respectively. "Attacking" the strings only makes the attack of each note more pronounced and the bassline more percussive. :)

@rocklee5x Well there is down picking, and alternate picking. Down picking means you pick all the notes in a downward move. Alternate means up and down picking.

@rocklee5x In sound or in tennique? It's harder than alternate picking. though some people find that its easier. And sound wise nou get a.. well that's hard to discribe. But you get a sharper shound. And it's more stacato.

Different angles of the pick will give the note a slightly different sound. Not sure how much would show up post-production, but the big feat here, is that doing all down picking is more difficult, as you simply have to move your hand quicker as it's a less efficient motion than picking down, and then immediately up.

@cassmi87 well, I think what he means is the ENTIRE song is downpicked. I don't even play bass regularly; I'm a rhythm guitarist. However, I have picked up a bass a few times and though it's not hard in concept or execution to downpick at that speed, it takes a lot out of you to do it for a whole song. Why do you think John has those guns? You don't get those from sitting around doing nothing, do you?
