No matter how bad you think it is, it's worse. If pensions were the only problem, we might be able to work it out. But state and local politicians have run up big tabs off the books on everything from capital projects to catastrophe insurance. Even the Pew "Gap" study update sets an artificially low number, at least on Page 1. Real numbers are inside.
