I reach into the basket to retrieve the head and hit it with a club. Actor stops moving. Drop head back into basket. Cool effect. well, one method often used in live-size magic guillotines is enlarging the lunette so the blade can fit as a whole in the top part, and a fake blade which fits in the bottom part.
A simple release mechanism can make it look like the blade has gone trough the arm, finger or neck without actually putting the "victim" in danger
another version (which I prefer) with a slightly enlarged blade holder (forgot the word) the blade can slide into, combine that with a lunette which is on both sides of the blade (blade in the middle) and a metal pin right above the endangered bodypart to force the blade into the holder. In this way it's possible to cut a carrot/cabbage in the head part by simply removing the pin and placing it in the top part
