This is an excellent video with which to teach really bad interview technique! The interviewer talks too much and fills in every gap. I applaud Michio Kaku for not skipping a beat, though.
Now Kaku was like: let me know when your done putting up your question... and then if u could just give me a chance to answer them one at a time.. that would be awsome.
17:30 Kaku talks about Top down (Douglas Lenat) & bottom up (Rodney Brooks) approaches to artificial intelligence.
Suddenly the other chap caught on the word "learn" and described "Expert Systems" as bottom up learning systems. That made Dr. Mihcio Kaku to scratch his head.
Even when I try to focus, I still can't follow the old man. His roll in this video is just to make sounds when Shang Tsung is silent. What he says doesn't matter.
I wonder if Michio Kaku was as irritated with that stupid talk show host as I was watching this. This guy is at best a third rate talk show host and Kaku is absolutely a first rate scientist and this guy is acting like Kaku is his peer. If he had an ounce of sense he would have gone um hm a few times to show he was listening and maybe every few minutes ask a brief token question to give kaku more to espouse on BUT THAT IS IT, he talked almost as much as Kaku did and I only care about Kaku!
He failed to mention type 4, A civilization that can utilize the power of the ENTIRE UNIVERSE or at least a big chunk of it much more than a galaxy or tap into other dimensions or planes of existance. The Q continuum on Star Trek Next Gen. and the world that Mxylplk in the Superman comix comes from are arguably Type 4 civilizations.
I wish that stupid bald headed third rate talk show host would talk less and let Kaku talk more, Kaku is infinitely more interesting than that guy and that other guy would just not shut up.
Kaku is probably one of the smartest men in this world today. I just baught his new book "Physics of the Impossible" and had the same reaction after i read Hyperspace. My view of the world and possibilitys have drastically changed because of this man.
thats part of what made MGS4 so cool, it took technological advances that scientists are thinking about overcoming, and giving you the worst case scenario. Lexus has already put in one of the advances Kaku mention: atop the steering wheel of the new Lexus car, there's a smart camera which is monitoring your eyes. If you "look" tired or not in a focus mode, the computer would over-ride some of major steering activities, to avoid obstacles ahead. So the future is here... When was this interview done? What year?
OK, The guy interviewing deserves to get punched in the ovaries. His interruptions are immature and lead to nothing substantial. He's like a fucking "pop-up" on a webpage. He made the experience of watching this video... never mind. Michio Kaku is great - I'm lazy, someone please edit this video without the useless comments from Mr. "Bag O' Balls"
Kaku is great, I love hearing what he has to say. I just wish he could have been interviewed by someone that knows how to interview well. I kept wanting to throttle him, telling him to shut up and let Kaku answer his !#&@ing questions!! Thanks for posting the video, overall I did enjoy it.
Yes, we do need the technology. There's a game controller coming out based on the tech that allows Stephen Hawking to control computers. It's being offered to consumers *to lower the costs to those that really NEED it* We need innovations, and we need them to be affordable to those that need them. Don't forget that medicines are a type of technology too, and require other technologies to discover and develop.
The question i find myself asking is, do we really need any of this new technology. Don't we have enough for a comfortable life now? Ok great computers will double every 1.5 years but America is the richest country in world and we have gettohs, let's reallocate some of those resouces.
Where's intel ibm microsoft? where was the internet invented? which government invests the most research into high tech? America is to computers what Russia is to space flight.
I live in U.S.A and I agree with ronan32, it's about the planet, aliens are gonna come down and laugh at us because we have wars over stupid shit the same way retarded gangs fight over streets that don't belong to them. If america expands and figures out a way to live on a planet or some other new revolutionary thing, america should take the credit, but everyone should have the right to use it.
You make it sound like the U.S. is the only country that has technology, chinees and japanees are way better at technology than we are, thank you guys for making the ps3.:)
The technological surround is complete. Luxury and comfort have won. So have US-dominated multinational corporations, who have presumably copyrighted every life form in sight. There is no sign of democracy, pesky old human nature or other species. This core vision of Kaku's is, frankly, dismal, reminding me of e.e.cummings's "spiritually impotent pseudo-community".
At what point in the future is technology going to have only good effects so that we won't need to invent new technologies to fix the problems that older technologies created? Has a year for that been picked out yet?
The host really needs to shut his mouth and stop interrupting all the time its pretty annoying. Its fascinating to see what the world as we know it will become.
predatory corporate capitalismmust be challenged externally and internally. the iraqis are risking life and limb to resist external exploitation, first worlders arent doing their part. under the current global system of unilateral domination, there are bound to be effects and reactions mixed with a disregard for anyone but #1. if this is not challenged and reversed, humans will prove they are non viable organismsm, and this has already come dangerously close to realization.
hope is one thing, but to act like it is possible under the current totalitarian economic system in the US is on the verge of blindness. think about how much a plasma TV costs, or how much CDs cost. when these techs do come out, they will be extremely expensive for the consumer, regardless of how cheap they are to make. people cant just sit back and hope that they will get a fair shake.
i dont think you understand what im saying and what the analogy implies. just because something is cheap to produce, as computer chips will be, means nothing when calculating the consumer cost in an economy driven by exploitation. think how much people would pay for gene enhancement and wall tvs etc... this would, first and formost, be made only available to the extremely wealthy.
Designer genes under the current global economic system would necessarily lead to greater and greater inequality. Kaku mentioned the movie GATTACA in his turgid fawning over technology without noticing the irony that GATTACA was a warning of the dangers of genetic engineering.
technology can only be used to benefit the majority of humanity when totalitarian control of the economy are dismantled, otherwise lockheed martin, NSA, etc. will be the main utilizers of this technology, to rule the world by force. this does not look to be changing anytime soon, given the successful thought control and policy control tactics, implemented by concentrations of economic power, over the majority of the industrialized world.
if you want another analogy, think about any other market in the US healthcare: millions dont have basic necessities for healthcare, due to a lack of money. education, also extremely limited and biased by socio/economic status; the lineage of harvard students, including george bush, is a testaments against any belief that our system is a meritocracy.
the entire system is skewed by entrenced interests, and to think that out totalitarian economic masters will be "born again" and decide to share with the rest of us is extremely naive and innocuous. predatory capitalism can never express the public will and its empowerment will only deepen economic gaps, creating a small elite. to think that emboldening elite concentrations of private minority economic totalitarianism will libearte people is a perversion of the term libretarian.
I agree with everything you say. And I'm the first to say that information and technology should be free to everyone as equals, nevertheless I wouldn't want everyone to have access to cloning, genetic engineering, ect. That of course is not to say that the few that will have access to that kind of technologies are going to be more responsible on using it for the betterment of human society.
I see your analogy, if we can't trust the developers on giving us a fair chance with simple things as TVs, what hope do we have with technology that can change and advance the human race. As it is said in the video the change from a type 0 to a type 1 society is threaten not be the lack of technological skills, but by sociological ones.
Dr. Michio Kaku is awsome! Its thrilling to hear about the theories and experiments that are being developed! I have hope these advancments will benefit us all and not be used solely for military purpose, the government has not done to much yet to stop the computer evolution from making your life better or you probly wouldn't be able to post what you did.
He said we won't need to pollute and rape the planet and the guy just looked at him and didn't even respond. That says it all to me. He answered everything else.
The manufacture of silicon chips involve very harmful toxins which do damage the environment. Lead, mercury, cadmium, brominated flame retardants, polyvinyl chloride and about a thousand others. Hooray!
It is questionable, at best, whether this can be accomplished withing our liberal "democracies"; given the modern tendency of this only to be a formal name. A revolution of consciousness, and consequently political consciousness, is needed; otherwise humans will exponentially continue towards apocalypse. This process seems to have be sped up recently, and slowly waiting on civil society to develop in a poisoned environment may delay long enough for it to be too late.
this has , and is, being done under the veil of justice and advancement; simply for their own narrow idiotic ends. humans have obviously created the material surplus necessary to translate our society into a planetary system, the main issue is if we develop our morality to an extent that will allow sustained human existence in the nuclear and greenhouse age and beyond.
micro-management of the economy from the bottom up will lead to economic/political synergy, the transition to this would be tricky, given the fact that a state would have to be in place temporarily until common sense can present itself... but must be a self destructive state in nature; basically a socialist state that successfully completes the transition into communism, with a tweaked and improved model of course, without greedy regressives constantly attempting to stunt progress.
the techique of thought control, greatly sophisticated since the nazi's pioneered a new era of thought control directed at elite benefit. this blunts the common sense nature of humans, and reduces this complex genuine respect of the adaptable to greedy self-centered illogical behavior that will inevitable result in our collective destruction; which the masters naively they can stave off, while sustaining their ludicrous wealth and power.
these technologies will be used to advance efforts by the economic dictators to rule the world by force. when the commoner is only seen in terms of a resource to be exploited, it is highly unlikely that these advances will translate into benifits for anyone but the people at the top of the ever widening economic gap. consider who funds all of this research (lockheed martin, etc.) concentrations of power are increasing.
given the financing and political structure of US society and the US's economic system, which show no signs of changing due to advanced methods of thought control which blunt common sensical advancement, most of this technology will be put to use in the military sector in order to aid the hegemon to rule the world by force; this will inevitably lead to self-destruction.
Interesting, but how will cheap production of technologies in biology, cpu, and nanotechnology be passed down to the commoner in a consumer based totalitarian economic system. Look in a store to see how much a cd costs.
I'm with you. Shoes are famously cheap to made, but Nike still sells them at $200+ a pair.
And if powerful technologies (which means more than just chips) become a necessity for participating in modern life, then manufacturers will have no incentive to make the sale price reflect the manufacturing costs. You will pay high prices because you will have to pay high prices.
Nike sells their shoes for that much because they can. If consumers suddenly decided Nike shoes are no longer fashionable, then the shoes would be reduced to a more reasonable price. You are not paying for the cost of the shoes, you are paying for the brand.
When was this interview conduct?

44:20 I strongly disagree with Dr. Kaku.
Evolution never stops! Even in today's society we have all elements(requirements) for the evolution to work. We still have:
1) Genetic drift
2) Separation of various types (geographical, social, racial, ability based, profession based, etc.)
3) Survival of the most adapted to the society and its changes.
Often extraordinary people (nerds, artist, etc.) do not have kids but what they create is used by others hence providing survival of the species.

If the year 2057 comes and goes and the only new thing is a second generation iphone I'm gonna laugh in michio kaku's FACE!!!!...No buy really good video and very smart guy.:)

the old guy interviewing isn't gonna be alive in the future so thats good.:)

lol vcr that made me chuckle..this must be the 80's

Lexus has already put in one of the advances Kaku mention: atop the steering wheel of the new Lexus car, there's a smart camera which is monitoring your eyes. If you "look" tired or not in a focus mode, the computer would over-ride some of major steering activities, to avoid obstacles ahead. So the future is here... When was this interview done? What year?
HenryDavidThoreauII 4 years ago
when was this filmed, sounds to me like 80s' ;/

he is smart... indeed!

What an interesting person. By the way I don't think the interviewer is that bad. Great talk by the guy.
ncurran1987 4 years ago
OK, The guy interviewing deserves to get punched in the ovaries. His interruptions are immature and lead to nothing substantial. He's like a fucking "pop-up" on a webpage. He made the experience of watching this video... never mind. Michio Kaku is great - I'm lazy, someone please edit this video without the useless comments from Mr. "Bag O' Balls"

the guy interviewing him was worse on the other one

Kaku is great, I love hearing what he has to say. I just wish he could have been interviewed by someone that knows how to interview well. I kept wanting to throttle him, telling him to shut up and let Kaku answer his !#&@ing questions!! Thanks for posting the video, overall I did enjoy it.

Yes, we do need the technology. There's a game controller coming out based on the tech that allows Stephen Hawking to control computers. It's being offered to consumers *to lower the costs to those that really NEED it* We need innovations, and we need them to be affordable to those that need them. Don't forget that medicines are a type of technology too, and require other technologies to discover and develop.
ab78999 4 years ago
The question i find myself asking is, do we really need any of this new technology. Don't we have enough for a comfortable life now? Ok great computers will double every 1.5 years but America is the richest country in world and we have gettohs, let's reallocate some of those resouces.
RussoSlyCat 4 years ago
everything is not a but america..this is a planet
ronan32 4 years ago
Where's intel ibm microsoft? where was the internet invented? which government invests the most research into high tech? America is to computers what Russia is to space flight.
RussoSlyCat 4 years ago
I live in U.S.A and I agree with ronan32, it's about the planet, aliens are gonna come down and laugh at us because we have wars over stupid shit the same way retarded gangs fight over streets that don't belong to them. If america expands and figures out a way to live on a planet or some other new revolutionary thing, america should take the credit, but everyone should have the right to use it.
chango714 4 years ago
You make it sound like the U.S. is the only country that has technology, chinees and japanees are way better at technology than we are, thank you guys for making the ps3.:)
chango714 4 years ago
As far as the last fifty years go the American government has been atleast a generation ahead of everyone else.
RussoSlyCat 4 years ago
That has nothing to do with anything, the nations have to start thinking as a whole, as a planet, or nobody will survive and we will all be fucked.
chango714 4 years ago
So, its going to be some sort of mix between gatica, judge dread, and japanese anime. Sounds like a wonderful future.
RussoSlyCat 4 years ago
Thank you but i will still prefer to talk to a human being over a toaster.
RussoSlyCat 4 years ago
Unfortunately it looks like the toaster will be the only company you'll be allowed to converse with.

The technological surround is complete. Luxury and comfort have won. So have US-dominated multinational corporations, who have presumably copyrighted every life form in sight. There is no sign of democracy, pesky old human nature or other species. This core vision of Kaku's is, frankly, dismal, reminding me of e.e.cummings's "spiritually impotent pseudo-community".
cloudmonkeys 4 years ago

The host won't shut up! write a book if you wanna talk so much god damn it.

hope is one thing, but to act like it is possible under the current totalitarian economic system in the US is on the verge of blindness. think about how much a plasma TV costs, or how much CDs cost. when these techs do come out, they will be extremely expensive for the consumer, regardless of how cheap they are to make. people cant just sit back and hope that they will get a fair shake.
jklasdfjdfksl 5 years ago
Yeah Plasma TVs, and cds, the cornerstone of the evolution of humanity.
k3ym4st3r 5 years ago
i dont think you understand what im saying and what the analogy implies. just because something is cheap to produce, as computer chips will be, means nothing when calculating the consumer cost in an economy driven by exploitation. think how much people would pay for gene enhancement and wall tvs etc... this would, first and formost, be made only available to the extremely wealthy.
jklasdfjdfksl 5 years ago
Designer genes under the current global economic system would necessarily lead to greater and greater inequality. Kaku mentioned the movie GATTACA in his turgid fawning over technology without noticing the irony that GATTACA was a warning of the dangers of genetic engineering.
TonyKaku 4 years ago
My bad. He did eventually brush upon the problems.
TonyKaku 4 years ago
technology can only be used to benefit the majority of humanity when totalitarian control of the economy are dismantled, otherwise lockheed martin, NSA, etc. will be the main utilizers of this technology, to rule the world by force. this does not look to be changing anytime soon, given the successful thought control and policy control tactics, implemented by concentrations of economic power, over the majority of the industrialized world.
jklasdfjdfksl 5 years ago
if you want another analogy, think about any other market in the US healthcare: millions dont have basic necessities for healthcare, due to a lack of money. education, also extremely limited and biased by socio/economic status; the lineage of harvard students, including george bush, is a testaments against any belief that our system is a meritocracy.
jklasdfjdfksl 5 years ago
the entire system is skewed by entrenced interests, and to think that out totalitarian economic masters will be "born again" and decide to share with the rest of us is extremely naive and innocuous. predatory capitalism can never express the public will and its empowerment will only deepen economic gaps, creating a small elite. to think that emboldening elite concentrations of private minority economic totalitarianism will libearte people is a perversion of the term libretarian.
jklasdfjdfksl 5 years ago
I agree with everything you say. And I'm the first to say that information and technology should be free to everyone as equals, nevertheless I wouldn't want everyone to have access to cloning, genetic engineering, ect. That of course is not to say that the few that will have access to that kind of technologies are going to be more responsible on using it for the betterment of human society.
k3ym4st3r 5 years ago
I see your analogy, if we can't trust the developers on giving us a fair chance with simple things as TVs, what hope do we have with technology that can change and advance the human race. As it is said in the video the change from a type 0 to a type 1 society is threaten not be the lack of technological skills, but by sociological ones.
k3ym4st3r 5 years ago
I hope we can reach a type 1 civilization, it would be amazing if the world could realize that transition.
TheMindForest 5 years ago
TheMindForest 5 years ago
Do you like talking to yourself ? ;) You have posted far to much for a complete reply but, the answer you seek are out there.

I agree we wouldnt need to, but the idea that will be done is divorced from the reality of the current situation.
jklasdfjdfksl 5 years ago
He said we won't need to pollute and rape the planet and the guy just looked at him and didn't even respond. That says it all to me. He answered everything else.

The manufacture of silicon chips involve very harmful toxins which do damage the environment. Lead, mercury, cadmium, brominated flame retardants, polyvinyl chloride and about a thousand others. Hooray!
TonyKaku 4 years ago
It is questionable, at best, whether this can be accomplished withing our liberal "democracies"; given the modern tendency of this only to be a formal name. A revolution of consciousness, and consequently political consciousness, is needed; otherwise humans will exponentially continue towards apocalypse. This process seems to have be sped up recently, and slowly waiting on civil society to develop in a poisoned environment may delay long enough for it to be too late.
jklasdfjdfksl 5 years ago
this has , and is, being done under the veil of justice and advancement; simply for their own narrow idiotic ends. humans have obviously created the material surplus necessary to translate our society into a planetary system, the main issue is if we develop our morality to an extent that will allow sustained human existence in the nuclear and greenhouse age and beyond.
jklasdfjdfksl 5 years ago
micro-management of the economy from the bottom up will lead to economic/political synergy, the transition to this would be tricky, given the fact that a state would have to be in place temporarily until common sense can present itself... but must be a self destructive state in nature; basically a socialist state that successfully completes the transition into communism, with a tweaked and improved model of course, without greedy regressives constantly attempting to stunt progress.
jklasdfjdfksl 5 years ago
the techique of thought control, greatly sophisticated since the nazi's pioneered a new era of thought control directed at elite benefit. this blunts the common sense nature of humans, and reduces this complex genuine respect of the adaptable to greedy self-centered illogical behavior that will inevitable result in our collective destruction; which the masters naively they can stave off, while sustaining their ludicrous wealth and power.
jklasdfjdfksl 5 years ago
these technologies will be used to advance efforts by the economic dictators to rule the world by force. when the commoner is only seen in terms of a resource to be exploited, it is highly unlikely that these advances will translate into benifits for anyone but the people at the top of the ever widening economic gap. consider who funds all of this research (lockheed martin, etc.) concentrations of power are increasing.
jklasdfjdfksl 5 years ago
given the financing and political structure of US society and the US's economic system, which show no signs of changing due to advanced methods of thought control which blunt common sensical advancement, most of this technology will be put to use in the military sector in order to aid the hegemon to rule the world by force; this will inevitably lead to self-destruction.
jklasdfjdfksl 5 years ago
Ok, just watched the rest. Seems like our fearless leaders have taken us back towards a type 0 civilization since this broadcast.
jklasdfjdfksl 5 years ago
Interesting, but how will cheap production of technologies in biology, cpu, and nanotechnology be passed down to the commoner in a consumer based totalitarian economic system. Look in a store to see how much a cd costs.
jklasdfjdfksl 5 years ago
I'm with you. Shoes are famously cheap to made, but Nike still sells them at $200+ a pair.
And if powerful technologies (which means more than just chips) become a necessity for participating in modern life, then manufacturers will have no incentive to make the sale price reflect the manufacturing costs. You will pay high prices because you will have to pay high prices.
TonyKaku 4 years ago
Nike sells their shoes for that much because they can. If consumers suddenly decided Nike shoes are no longer fashionable, then the shoes would be reduced to a more reasonable price. You are not paying for the cost of the shoes, you are paying for the brand.
pokeyokey 4 years ago
Hooray for marketting!
There are cheaper shoes out there, but they tend to fly apart quickly. Perhaps if I made my own...
On CDs, the other person was referring to music industry monopoly (which artists don't usually benefit much from, incidentally).
TonyKaku 4 years ago
Are you serious? Do you not realize you're not paying for the cd itself? You are paying for the contents of the cd.
