I'm now 47 and my wife and I are going to bang our heads with them at Coaches Corner In "FUNCK ROCK GEORGIA" on November 3rd. Just eight days away...can't wait! : D
Must have seen Mothers Finest 6 or more times @ Savannah GA Civic Center from 79-81 while in high school. They always "OWNED" whoever they opened for and the audience, much to the dismay of the headliner taking the stage in Mothers Finest's wake! I still remember them opening for an Atlanta Rythm Section concert and front man Ronnie Hammond comming out and saying he didn't know if ASR should even bother to preform after that. Most DANGEROUS opener ever...Who can follow them?!?!
Here I am 58 years listening to this song....I am still in it...like I was when I first heard in 1978....25 years old.....TRUTH GONNA SET YOU FREE! listen to the musicians...and Baby Jean....
I have been a BIG FAN for many many years. Love that rock/funk!! They make Georgia proud!! Many years ago, saw BB at a drum clinic in Smyrna, GA <3 - THEY ROCK!!
Saw them in a small venue in South Georgia back in 1980 or 81....they blew me away. I had never heard such a fusion of funk, rock, and soul. I have been a fan ever since. Baby Jane is possibly the best woman singer that I have ever seen live.
They were really big in North Carolina and in the south back in the day. I still have this 45. It is the B side. Love Changes is on the A side. Joyce Kennedy was an underrrated vocalist. She can blow indeed.
MOTHERS FINEST IS TRUELY A GREAT BAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I GREW UP IN A LIL GORGIA TOWN CALLED MONROE. BARRY BORDON , TYHE DRUMER WAS A GOOF FRIEND OF MINE AND SOON SO WAS THE BAND. JERRY SEAY IS THE MAN THAT INSPIRED ME TO PLAY BASS. HES TRUELY A AMAZING BASS PLAYER I TRUELY LOVE THIS BAND !!!!!!! JUST WISH THEY WOULD TO AFULL 2 DC LIVE ALBUM SET WITH A FULL 70s CONCERT I DAMN SURE MISS THIS BAND FROM THE 70s. MOTHERS FINEST WILL ALWAYS KICK ASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I found the album on cd. Only Mother's Finest they had at the mall. Nice gift for myself and I will rock this one for my for my funky friends!! This album is a treasure.
I am so fortunate to have shared a stage and a late night breakfast at whatever local Wafflehouse with them on several occasions!!! I want to thank Mother´s Finest & I will love them 4Ever!
This on the "Another Mother Futher" album (approx spelling) along with "Burnin' Love" -- the Elvis song... too hot! Underappreciated band! Also like the orig Rufus band... got funk!
outstanding groove... tightest live band i know, most underrated drummer. I wish i could listen to Chaka Khan togehther with Joyce on Stage with THAT Band.
never fails to amaze me, it always takes a tiny chick like Joyce or Nona to show us how to REALLY rock out....I would consider Ms Kennedy one of the great front-women of the last century. She and Patti Labelle, showed us that black chick singers can front a funk/rock band better than anybody...
These guy's were so far ahead of their time, that the world is just now catching up to them. Thanx Adam Lambert for dropping MF as an influence. That's all it took. I've idolized this band since 1977. Least recognized. Most Influential. Stellar.
Seems they had/still have a great regional following. I am from Travelrs Rest. Mothers played my '74 senior prom! Blew the place away, as most had not quite caught on yet. If I remember right, we had to pay em $1000.00. They play the HandleBar in greenville tonight!
I love reading comments from people who've just now stumbled upon the MF force of nature.
Yes, hearing Baby Jean and MF for the first time is something akin to a religious experience. Joyce fucking brings it...she has a glorious black woman's voice pumped up with a hard rocker's mojo.
She's right up there with Aretha, Patti, and Chaka in vocal talent, but she kicks all of their asses with her take-no-prisoners attitude.
I find it funny and odd that you can't find "Niggiz can't sing rock'n roll" I suppose it is now PI, but Fuck that! MF wrote it and everything that needs to be said is in that song! I lived that time and dammit! This band brought it all together! This was the perfect blending of it al! Why be ashamed of it??!!
Rayrayholland: What the hell did you have to airbrush? I saw these guys in-person, up close and personal, several times - they always looked great! But, more important than that - they sounded great LIVE - something that MOST band CAN'T say these days!
They used to play regularly at the Midnite Sun In Spartanburg, SC back in the mid to late 70's, and they always rocked the house down! So many people came to see them, sometimes we couldn't even get in the door.
I'm just a guy from Laurens who used to party at The Sun a lot, until they busted the owner for tax evasion and tore the building down! I never cared for the Disco scene, but I saw MF at a club in Atlanta (where they came from) and when I heard they were playing at the Sun, I had to go check 'em out! I'm glad to see they're still kickin' ass after all these years!
OK, I have to correct you on something. The Sun was not torn down due to tax evasion. The owner of The Sun sold the lot to McDonald's. I remember joking with them the last few nights they were open as we walked in to pay the cover charge - I'd ask for a Big Mac and fries.
Well, that was just the rumor we heard; I stand corrected! But, it doesn't make sense because it seemed to be a thriving business. The place was packed every time I went in there!
I'd pay to hear her sing the phone book! I miss them to this day! If you get the chance to hear them LIVE drop everything and go! One of the few bands i could follow night after night like a Dead Head. Good times to be had here..
If you are ignorant of the existence of this powerhouse band, I feel sorry for you. These people were so far ahead of their time, that people were unable to comprehend their relevance. Blacks and whites rocking together? They mixed Sly&theFamily Stone with Led Zeppelin with a dash of Aretha, and created absolute goose bump soul and rhythm! MF inspired me to play music.
@mofilovr285 I agree....Ive seen some of the best acts in the world perform. And to date, Mother's Finest was the best live performance Ive ever seen....no bullshit. And I saw everything from white heavy metal headbangers to asian drag queens in the audience. When you have the range they have, you can appeal to a fuckin pigmy in the Australian outback. They're one of the baddest bands to ever step on a stage, no doubt. And Joyce is one of if not the most underrated rock chick in the game.
@mofilovr285 .....If you locate the clip of "Mickey's Monkey", from this same show, listen towards the end. They take the basics of "Who Knows" (Hendrix, Band Of Gypsies), gave a slight twist, & rocked it to hell. Double love this group!!!
@gdrbs427 They were the first concert I went to, on my own (early 1981). They rocked it so good, Atlanta Rhythm Section had no business trying to play afterwards. It was pitiful. I left. lol
@mofilovr285 i just discovered MF recently, and feel like a shithead that I overlooked this band when I was growing up (45 yr old now). I am in total heaven, and yes they were wayyyy ahead of their time.
@mofilovr285 : I saw Mother's Finest as the warmup band to The Commodores at a concert at UNC-Wilmington circa 1977-1978. They were awesomeness on a stick. I left before the Commodores came on stage. Mother's Finest were the headliners I went for.
@lausley I saw them in Greenville, SC at a nightclub that I had to use a fake ID to get in. I was in line for about 2 hours not even knowing if they would let me in. It was one of the best concerts I ever saw.
What a fusion of rock & funk. Labelle just redid this song on their new reunion CD, " Back To Now ". Nona Hendryx sings lead. Labelle & Mother's Finest - the 2 leading groups in melding rock/funk/soul.
When Rock & Soul come together you have Mother's Finest. Got to see them at Mother Fletchers in Mytrle Beach and at Frances Marion Collage, way back in the Mid 70's. I agree they have never had the recognition they deserve, it's a shame cause Baby Jean is top of her game, even today as they still tour. Will always love Baby Jean's vocal and the band.
Mother's Finest!!---A grossly underrated funk/rock band from the 70's and early
80's that never got the recognition they so richly deserve! Joyce "BabyJean" Kennedy is one of the most expressive emotional voices in a league with Chaka Khan, Ann Wilson and Pat Benetar!
oh my god ALL HAIL JOYCE KENNEDY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! if aliens came dowm for up there and asked me "what is soul music?" i would play them 1 the truth"ll set you free 2 poet (sly) and rock steady "aretha" that's it
We invented the shit what are you talking about. The record companies screwed this band to the hilt they should have supa dupa stars and Joyce Baby Jean Kennedy should have been the leading lady of rock. they didn't know how to present this band. (record companies)but yes this band was a Motha.hence Mothers Finest
this is the baddest funk, rock band of alltime, know band would dare follow them, they would get blown off the stage,Truth will set you free and all those bands that got all the Pub knew that.
Bow down when they're in your town. MF is a true pioneer in funk rock. They were so far ahead of their time that record stores had no section for them. MF routinely blew headliners off the stage, yet were unrecognized on Billboard. Another Mother Further was as close as they got, then unfortunately were steered in another direction. Sly & The Family Stone meets Led Zepplin! All hail MOTHER'S FINEST!!!
It is really unbelievable that this band with such great songs & musicians never being rewarded the way they should have been. They are one of the best bands I've ever heard in my life!!!
Makes me wish I grew up in the '70s, lol! MF is definitely one of my ALL-TIME favorite music acts. Too bad they never got the chance to show their stuff here on the west coast or else they would've gotten over for sure. Still, gotta give props were props are due!
Notice how they float the beat of the song before they start on Joyce's cue. Notice how they all nod their heads to the sickeningly thick groove. Notice Joyce "Baby Jean" Kennedy's strut as she effortlessly riffs through this song. Notice at the bass riff before the solo, Wizzard appears to kick Glenn's tam in the air
Oh Yeah! Nobody yet has outshone MF! I hope to make the April 21, 2007 show at Club 29 (Atlanta, GA). So good to see footage of the original lineup. Baby Jean's voice rules!
Just brought this out from my collection again. MF surely still kicks some....

Totally overlooked and underrated band! MF don't play, they make your butt get up and move!!
Who said black people can't play rock and roll??
thumbsaloft 3 years ago
We invented the shit what are you talking about. The record companies screwed this band to the hilt they should have supa dupa stars and Joyce Baby Jean Kennedy should have been the leading lady of rock. they didn't know how to present this band. (record companies)but yes this band was a Motha.hence Mothers Finest

AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME, GROOVE! Thanks for sharing this!
