  • beautiful..I'll be there tonight, in the night we build a bridge across the sea and land, tonight we build a bridge across the sea and land, running and not looking back, and your heart beats so slow, through the rain and fallen snow, across the fields of mourning, to a light that's in the distance, coming home, coming home, coming home..I love you Bono, I love U2

  • I love this!! I love you Bono, I love U2

  • Comment removed

  • Imagine this -- its 1984, and I was in high school. Nobody cared about this band !! I saw them in D.C. and everyone I knew as like.. HUH? Hard to believe. But that was the truth. I saw them at the Capital Center - liked them early on. Couldnt get enough of them. October, Boy, were great albums... this was great too

  • Where is this video from? p.s.: My favourite song of U2.

  • A few Belfast murals in the beginning

  • Ive heard many arguments of 80s U2 vs 90's U2... but i agree that they are too very different sides to the band but i think thats what makes them the best band in the world

  • @guipinsan *such a deep and amazing song

  • @u2MRtheFLY such a deep and amazing deserves some proper appreciation rather than those ridiculous comments about how amazing bono's money is. shame on you guys. really

  • Theres something in this song which makes u feel warm!!! A beautiful composition and heartfelt lyrics to back the melody...!!!! Kudos to U2..THEY ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • from the last good album this band put out. Went down hill from here!!!

    Great tune!

  • i guess this is audio is from the single wide awake in america isn't it? or am i wrong?

  • i wish i could find the full show from the barrowlands clips in this video. amazing!

  • My favourite U2 song.

  • Eles são grandes. Toda vez procuro por uma canção e acabo ouvindo tantas outras. Nunca uma banda foi tão criativa e variada, e ainda, colocando em cada musica uma marca propria. Genios!

  • u2 is listed on wikipedia 4 times in the top 20 biggest tours all time ! No band or artist has done this.

madonna's tour grossed more than the vertigo tour but u2 had more in attendance. I look at attendance. So really u2 has the 2nd biggest tour all time when you look at inflation.

u2's current 360 tour is ranked 6th already with ONLY 44 shows played. THATS IMPRESSIVE.

  • I play this song whenever I take long car drives, Im always totally immersed in it. Don't even get me started on how I feel when I drive through deserts and open landscapes. ON BORDERLAND WEYEEE RUN!!!

  • Of course this is one of the songs U2 built it's legend on. I wish they stayed with this style instead of switching to runway music for supermodels (eg Mysterious Ways)

  • if they would not have changed their music, then their 2nd best album wouldn't exist.

i've said this hundreds of times. u2 realized in order for them to be ready for the 90's they had to change their style. and they executed so well with such a different sound.

no other band has gone through major reincarnation as u2 did during that time. and not only that they pulled it off quite well.

  • Actually, David Bowie was also good at reinventing himself. But you're right. Do we really see any bands in the mainstream right now that will be around even in 10 years? Most of them don't last 5.

There will never be another U2, that's for sure. No matter how hard Coldplay tries. Ha!

  • @u2MRtheFLY

u2's sound may have evolved, but the reality is nearly all of their songs from the early days are unremarkable.

people may remember 2 or 3 songs from unforgettable fire, and 1 or 2 songs from war... and even then the live versions are *far* better than the studio versions... (e.g. studio version of 'homecoming' sucks). october has no appeal to anyone other than a die hard fan.

u2 may be great live, but their studio material is at best uneven - from forgettable to very good.

  • @shtstirrer first off when your one of the best bands to walk the earth AND your THE best live band ur live performances will overshadow the studio versions.

bottomline is people need to have an attraction to your songs to come to your concerts. I know many that didn't start listening until War came out.

  • @u2MRtheFLY

    yawn.

*none* of U2's songs had any broad appeal until joshua tree. pride and sunday both weren't number one hits - neither even came close.

u2 was a SMALL TIME band that had a SMALL TIME following, at least until joshua tree. u know it, i know it, everybody knows it.

why don't you just face the facts for what they are instead of sticking your head up your ass and pretending otherwise?

    sheesh.

  • @shtstirrer so basically your telling me that they were still small when they performed LIVE aid in 85? as i remember correctly lots said u2 stole the show. are you also telling me that Live at Red Rocks produced a small following? Thats why MTV played the vid over and over again. your soo right, sunday bloody sunday is such a boring song.

  • @u2MRtheFLY

so what if MTV played live at red rocks over and over again? they also played britney a lot on MTV too. equating britney with u2 is laughable.

and u2 at live aid was *nowhere* near as big as they were when they were after joshua tree. one show does not make a band. give me a break.

and also - i didn't say sunday bloody sunday was boring - you did. it's obvious your reading comprehension skills are deficient.

    dimwit.

  • @shtstirrer Putting Britney and u2 in the same paragraph is laughable. If you would like to talk about 'reading comprehension skills', than maybe you should use capital letters at the beginning of your sentences - dimwit.

Bottomline u2 is an incredible band. Now get off my nuts. Your not even good enough to hold my jock strap. You should consider changing your name to shitsniffer instead of shtstirrer.

  • your so richt

  • i'd like to see Lady Gaga write a song like this haha

    she couldn't if she tried

  • i would like to see any musician who on the top 10 right now..

"PUMP UP THE MUSIC; DOWN ON THE FLOOR BITCH SUCK MY D*CK" MONEY OH YEAH,, music was just better those days.

  • I think this is so much better than the album version. I love this one! The lyrics is also brilliant.. thank you U2 :)

  • Fantastic song. Used to listen to this a lot in the 80's. Love it!!!!!!

  • most favorite U2 song. brilliant

  • The fact that ppl are debating which period of U2 is the best shows they did something right but to say that U2 suck is pure ignorance. My personal fave period of U2 is between Boy and UF, they were a young band and hungry to take on the world and it shows. The joshua tree was a definite re invention of themselves and catapuled them to superstardom. They came back w/ rattle & then achtung which was incredible. No band is worth their salt if they don't keep reinventing themselves.

  • My favorite period of U2 is between Boy and The Joshua Tree... Specially until The Unforgettable Fire, where Bono still had his english "hard". Though in my opinion... Bonos voice during the Vertigo tour was also excellent, different from before, but excellent... IMO, Bono's best periods: between Boy and Joshua Tree and during the Vertigo Tour.

  • U2 wrote "Miami"

  • On borderland we run. Beautiful. This would've been a great song for the intro in Borderlands.

  • I wanna shake the guy's hand whoever started the chanting and clapping

  • I'm coming home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • u2 were great band in the past . i saw them live at 2005 and the concert was poor, too much images and tv´s but few music . how is possible you compare them with the stones or beatles, both are BY FAR more better than u2, for quantity and quality¡¡¡

  • the stones or beatles wouldn't touch u2 live..... u2 is right behind rolling stones for highest grossing tour of all time... the one that you said was 'poor'.

the 360 tour their on now they're on pace to beating the stones. oh and by the way u2 has won more grammy's than ANY band which is 22 grammy's and i gaurantee they sweep everyone at the grammy's this year

  • @u2MRtheFLY u2 is by faraway better then other band..

  • @u2MRtheFLY do you have to use numbers and ridiculous facts just to say that u2 are better than any other band? i mean i love u2 because of their music. period. if they were a commercial failure i would love them the exact same way. if they havent won a single grammy it would be the exact same thing. measuring u2 by their commercial status and earnt money just show how shallow you are. you and 14 other people unfortunately.

  • @guipinsan whats wrong talking about numbers? you know how many of my friends arent crazy about u2? i dont care. im still a HUGE fan. So I feel the same. If commercially they were a disaster still id love them. BUT, when your comparing bands over the ages, you have to look at the numbers and im not talking about $. The tour u2 is on, they're averaging 65,000 in attendance a night. that is a record. im just mentioning the that side of the u2. sue me.

  • @u2MRtheFLY winning grammys means nothing.look at how many the beatles won. granted, i've seen u2 3x and they are my 2nd favorites, but NO ONE will ever meet the beatles and what they did in a very short time period.beatles couldnt hear themselves play, their live act was best when they were in germany, their tours were pure madness, something u2 couldnt even fathom.

  • @MrAdamthebeast Tha't's true, without the beatles, there will be no u2, bono is the first to admit it, but MY FAVOURITE BAND AFTER QUEEN IS U2, and there is no band like them, with so many reinventations and critical aclaim and sales like them and with so much love from the fans as well as the artists, tell me one band that have played or recorded with mc cartney, jagger, dylan, BB king, johnny cash, springsteen, patty smith, and I keep going on and on and on

  • @u2MRtheFLY The 360 Tour already beat the Rolling Stones

  • i saw them in august and they were brilliant, the stage was awesome but the music made it. They played every brilliant single - pride, streets, with or without you, one, still havent found,

In 2005 u2 went back to boy and war and the song choice wasnt great, they didnt play what everyone wanted to hear

  • U2 were the best band in the world in the early days. In my opinion U2 turned to dull turgid formulaic shit after the Joshua Tree!! I was a huge fan up to the Joshua Tree, after that I gave up on them!!

  • achtung baby was turgid formulaic shit? I DONT THINK SO !

If a band stays the same they become boring. when u hear the stones u get the stones, the beatles u get the beatles NO band in the world has invented themselves as many times as u2 has and still sound like they're on top of the world.

when bands try to do something different they suck u2 can do this.

  • @u2MRtheFLY Your name screams FanBoy, but you speak the truth friend :)

  • I agree although I think that Rattle and Hum was still pretty good. I miss the old days.

  • such a beautiful performance

  • I saw U2 live in 1987 . . . . . I remember they performed this song, and it seems like a lifetime ago. I will say I'm glad I saw them more than 20 years ago -- they were never better than they were at that moment.

  • I think so..:)

    100% agree with you dude..

I was born in 1991 but They were invincible in the 80's years...I think Joshua Tree was their peak.:)

    Sorry for my eng.:(

  • muy buen tema y video!! u2 inigualables!!

  • amazing song, great ending

  • In 1991 i was at college and we got asked to play the music we most loved. At the time i played this - and tbh no one else liked it but me. Now i get similar ppl telling me they alays liked it - total bullshit tbh, I dont like plastic supporters, ok nuff said

  • They were so great back then and they're still so great! Love them! Just the best band of the world!

  • oh my god, look how young!

  • my favorite song of my favorite album

  • this is a masterpiece... and the album (the unforgettable fire) is too...

  • U2360 is Beast.

  • Comment removed

  • lolz i luv this. but tell me, how many of u can say u kno the name of every band member, if they hav a nickname and why they have it, and the name of their manager with out looking it up on google? lolz, i'm just a super fan =D

  • Adam Clayton, Paul Hewson, Larry Mullins Jr. and Davis Evans. Manager Paul McGuinness. I read the U2 by U2 book. Very good read. :) Bonovox is a hearing aid. The Edge isn't really clarified. They have several reasons but the contour of his face is the leader.

  • nice lolz

  • God, they were just babes in the woods then...

  • a sort

  • Sound is a bit off!

  • I kinda like the way it sounds

  • I liked All That You Can't Leave Behind, but felt Atomic was sorta lacking. Hey, things and people change. There are gems in the new stuff too however...

  • This really was their best. I do enjoy the new stuff, but long for them to return to their "roots"

  • i like their new stuff. hav u heard no line on the horizon yet? it's not my fav album (nothing compared to Joshua Tree or All That U Can't Leave Behind) but its way better then Atomic. I luv Get on Ur Boots and Magnificent the best.

  • How does Larry play this song? With his floor tom? And then snare and the highest sounding tom? Or is the highest sounding tom a timbale?

I really wanna know :( It's one of those mysteries of my live... :P

  • Sounds like he is doing a disco style beat on the tom toms. 16ths.

  • This was the good old days when U2 were so great and making unbelievably good music. Sad to say, now they make garbage like Atomic Bomb and the new single "Boots" which is a piece of garbage. 'll listen to the old stuff rather than the crap they put out now

  • People said that when they first heard Even Better than the Real Thing - but then Achtung Baby! was released.

  • Achtung Baby was a great album....good call!

Funny how Joshua Tree has so many "hits" but was a truly mediocore output from a band of U2's caliber.

  • thank me coz i saved them

  • I'm not a big fan ou u2 or mullets, but I do love this song ,means alot )

  • dunno, but Bono seems to have always been a religious man (as in "I still haven't found what I'm looking for"), just his spirituality is larger than organized religion -- hey, check out my favorites, I'm flattered!

  • I try to sing along with this song, but it's too emotional, I can't go on

  • why r u guys fighting this is a sad song not a happy song and i cried when it was on the 80s weekend

  • Yes, the Irish diaspora - whether they left their homeland because of starvation and poverty or to escape repression, it was hard to go and bitter to return -- things are better now, thankfully - but the song still tears me up when I try to sing it, my voice goes all croaky with emotion :)

  • why is he wearing a cross necklace

  • Take a guess.

  • never mind

  • @zenodoros

ummmm ru sume fortune teller can i take ur tarot cards

  • I love this song. This has got to be one of my top 3 faves from "Unforgettable Fire", the other two being "Wire" and " The Unforgettable Fire". Amazing.

  • U2 has been an influence on Chris Martin of Colplay. Wiki quotes Chris' comment on this song: "The first song on The Unforgettable Fire, "A Sort of Homecoming," I know backward and forward -- it's so rousing, brilliant and beautiful. It's one of the first songs I played to my unborn baby." "

  • this is totally one of their best videos (and songs), should be played more

  • that song was used for marissa graymonds funeral

  • u2 must have a full audio/dvd on one of these shows uf tour to me its u2 at there best and bonos voice was nothing short of amazing

  • Yes, his voice is very good during UF, BUT, it was only coming into it's own here. During the JT and RAH era he was at his very peak. Then 1990, Germany, Achtung Baby happened and it was in a steep decline.

  • dont agree after the uf tour he was losing his voice.

alot of the joshua trees show it

  • Perhaps you're not overly familiar with the English language, or perhaps you did not read the comment properly. I urge you to do so. I said, he was good during UF, but during JT and RAH he was GREAT.

  • yes i can read its youtube not an english lesson most replys i get are insults or unreadable bollox lol.

  • However, you understand what I meant with my comment I take it?

  • Aint been to school for 20 years aint having english lessons how to comment on youtube

me done on this video aint comming back here

  • Off course not. Keep writing your inane ramblings and under-educated shite. It takes all sorts to make this world interesting I guess.

  • why do i reply to a fucking backwards asshole like you

Dont write something here you wouldnt say to my face stupid little cunt

    last post here

    awesome video

  • one of my favorites ever by them. gorgeous song :)

  • these are my two fave programes in the world mr bean never made me cry anytime its the verelles boulevardins made me cry heaps in the 80s weekend marrissa graymond died when that song played

  • its sad

  • Another unforgettable beauty!

  • ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡I LOVE THIS SONG¡¡¡¡¡

    IS BEAUTIFUL¡¡¡¡¡¡ (and bono too¡¡¡)

  • it's beautiful!

  • We are all travelers..

But each of us have home, special and original...

  • Best of the world

  • im dreaming

  • the essence of music, of being... u2

  • We will have to wait and see if All TYCLB or Atomic Bomb stand the test of time. I surf Sky Music channels fairly often and always stumble across tunes from Rattle and Hum, JT and even War. It's been a while I've heard anything from Atomic Bomb. Vertigo is played fairly often though.

And yes, I go to a show everytime they tour, it cannot compare to their shows I've been to in the 80's

  • This is an open place and people should be aware of that before reading other's opinions to avoid feeling or being offended about other's thoughts. I respect everybody's opinions. Tha fact that U2 is not as popular as it was is because any Band can endure as much and keep the same intensity as they did in the 80s. They still make good songs such as Beautiful Day, A Man and a Woman (hidden gem in HTDAAB), Original of the Species, Walk On, Grace, Kite, In a Little While are great great songs.

  • I think the songs I mentioned can resiste the test of time, because they are simple and beautiful and they talk about issues that have ever existed since Mankind started recording their concerns about LIFE. I love U2 because otherwise many rock bands they always give hope and intense feelings when I listen to their songs. Walk On helped me in such a Bad moment. A man and a Woman makes me think of a Real Love, And This A Sort of Home Coming makes dream of the glorious way back Home...

  • to Finish my Comments Here. I would like to say:

"For tonight at last I am coming home".

  • All That You Can't Leave Behind is much better than both An Unforgettable Fire and especially Rattle and Hum. In fact, it's better than Boy and October, too. I'll say The Unforgettable Fire is better than How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, but HTDAAB is still better than the others. "Beautiful Day", "Vertigo", "City of Blinding Lights", "Walk On", "Grace", "Love and Peace or Else", and several others are U2 classics.

  • im gogo dancing

  • Kellykinsel...you're not from Europe I suppose. Sold out stadiums everywhere. U2 biggest band ever.

  • Agree with Kellykinsel. U2 cannot do the anthem type songs that requires Bono to really push his vocal limits. Their songs now are lackluster, run of the mill instantly forgettable rock/pop songs. I still maintain to this day, the reinvention after the '89 Love Town tour was the end of the true U2, Bono's haunting voice and Edge's mysterious riffs are just not there anymore. I can still listen to their music daily up to the Rattle and Hum album. Anything after that is not even comparable anymore

  • I wish they would still play this live.

  • la huella de u2 en la musica sera imborrable. El mejor grupo desde los 80 con diferencia por su talento y sus meritos

  • In Songs like, A SORT OF HOMECOMING and WALK ON, we can see how much they love Ireland.

    I really love this song.

    And I really love U2!!!

  • I always wanted to play this returning home after a long tour or journey.

  • U2 in their prime. What a fantastic band they were at this time. Love it..

  • Beautiful in every way.

  • Thier music is so melodic! I wish I knew where thier inspiration comes.

  • Great version and my favorite of them too. I want to know the exact location of this song, if somebody could tell me please, because I have the album Wide Awake In America and just says that is a version during The Unforgettable Fire Tour, I want to know if is from '85 or '84 and the place. Thank you very much.

  • can't stop crying

    I was only 14

    years old

    can't stop crying

  • oh no I want to die

I'm crying and I want to die

this song makes me feel like that

    crying

  • i know i cried too

  • Karma,

I'm sure 1.38-1.40 is the M1 around Sheffield, elevated section of motorway with the big cooling towers at the side (traffic on left so in UK)

  • This is too hot for words I am amazed, I love this one! Great song, thanks for sharing!

  • Love the song, I don't believe I've seen this video before. Thanks!

  • This owns.

  • No this video is just not real.

    It can't possibly exist.

I've got Under A Blood Red Sky on CD though too, now.

How could this video be real?

How? I'm trying to transition to With Or Without You, but this doesn't help.

And those trucks! The big damn tractor trailer things oh my god oh my god

    How could it be real?

  • I can't fucking believe this video. It's not real.

They were my favourite band when I was 14.

I just can't fucking believe this video. That it could be real. I remember MTV. Played this video. God! That this video could still exist. It's just not real.

  • I'll try to answer some of these posts: pics and footage on this video are taken in lots of cites, maybe New York, I see Rotterdam mentioned. But I recognise both Dublin and London (The Thames and Battersea Power Station are seen). Dunno where that concert is shot, it looks too small for Madison Sq Garden. Song is about him atempting to return to his Christian roots.

  • I'm 33 and have been a U2 fan since my cousin introduced me to them at the age of 10. This is by far my most favorite song by U2! Simply amazing! The most brilliant band ever!

  • great song, great video.

edge plays his Explorer and that is a great guitar (i have one!!) and there are pictures of rotterdam in this video and thats where i live!

  • so the video i recorded i rotterdam?

  • no, the footage comes from a lot of places like belgium and france etc. but there are some shots from rotterdam

  • allright, but the concert are from...?

  • Just liqufy this magical art and I'll main line it. how i love it let me count the infinitys or in nonart language do the math

  • best song of U2!

  • Bono compose this song arriving to Ireland

from the War Tour, the feelings he felt

to come back home to his wife.

  • a very great song that doesnt get the attention that it should....whoooaaaaa whooaaaaaa whooaaaaaa

  • very true

  • love you all U2

  • U2387 just said it the best. This song, way back in the day, do you guys remember? Anyone over 30 on this site? Listen to the man sing, if you don't like U2, still, come on, do what these guys did and then get back to me. This song is America/Ireland heartache, what else can you ask for?

  • balooney111--Amen brother

  • @balooney111 I'm over 30 and I remember when this was in heavy rotation on MTV. Back when MTV actually played music!

  • Love this song, does anyone have any other live versions of it to post ?

  • me atreveria a decir que a sort of homecoming es la mejor cancion de U2. es tremenda esta cancion. U2 FOREVER THE BEST BAND OF THE WORLD!!

  • this is one of my personal favorite songs by U2. the other is running to stand still.

  • Can't go wrong with those songs...my question is, how the heck did you settle on any 2 songs as your favorite? Hard to do.

  • This song is BY FAR the best representation of the 'U2 sound' they pioneered... rock and roll that is passionate, lyrically and instrumentally genius and paints picture in the background. Forerunner to songs like In God's Country and Where the Streets Have No Name.. and this from someone who prefers their War 1983 sound to any other time!

  • War is awesome...October rocks and is so awesome with U2's hard-raw sound. I Threw A Brick Through A Window was a personal favorite of mine in the '80s. It sucks that if you aren't a U2 fan...you haven't heard it.

  • I love the live version of this song. I wish they would play it more often.

  • The drumming in this song...cannot even describe it. Technically a very hard song to play live, with the different tempos.

Kellykinsel...they still put out amazing music.

Mullen Jr's drumming on songs like zoo station, beautiful day, vertigo is just as good.

Simply kellykinsel...Lawerence is the greatest rock drummer of all time.

  • Probably U2's most underrated songs.

  • This was when U2 was great! The garbage they put out today is disgraceful compared to what they used to create

  • you know nothing about u2. go listen to mainstream radio edit you idiot...

  • If you are dumb enough to think the garbage U2 puts out today would have been considered comparabale to what they did in the early years then you are the one who knows nothing about music. THe new albums are compete junk and that is evident by the albums sales and even the lackluster tours . They do areans and not stadiums now because of the embarassment of half empty stadiums during Pop. Us will be remember fo Boy, War, Joshua Treem Achtung baby. The last decade is third rate junk

  • Kellykinsel is correct in everything they say.

  • I respect your opinion but, I don't agree. I think that the group is getting better and better. I like the old albums as much as the new ones. I don't think the new albums are junk. If today they aren't as popular as they were in the early years, the reason is that today people prefer simple and POP music. U2 is very complex, they talk about and get envolved with politcs and religion. That's not the favourite subject of young people. Well, U2 will always be U2. That's enough to me.

  • Don't get me wrong, I still love U2 and the stuff they put out now is still better than anyone else but it just isn't what they used to make. But still good compared to horrible junk out there now

  • Right.

I'm waiting anxiously to the next album.
