LOL though with inflation - it did go up to 2 pence - You used to be able to , in the late 70's , make a telephone call from a public phone box for 2 pence - . I Used to get 20pence a week pocket money, and for that I could get a bag of crisps, a lollipop, a sherbert dib-dab, and also a mass of 1p, and half penny sweets with the change !! - wow, now i feel old LOL

In the good old days in the UK, you needed a penny to get into the stalls in a public lavatory....hence the look of desparation

Many years ago to use a public lavatory rthere was a charge of one penny and each cubicle dor had a device upon it where you inserted a penny to open the door .. hence the term to SPEND A PENNY
