Video won't load here either lol! I had to sit around hours as I remember it when i was a kid watching this while the games where loading. What was even worse was the tapes that had severall games on it (up to around 5-6 i think) I then had to load up each game and select next after it was loaded, so to get to the last game would take up to an hour.
The reason for this is because they used some of the raster registers on the video chip to hold values while loading ... possibly for decompression mathematics or simply just as a buffer.
The C64 never "squealed", you are probably getting it confused with the Spectrum (which certainly did). If anything, you would expect to be greeted with a loading screen and music (something modern games could take on board).
For the geeks out there, I think this is a Cyberloader. Each different loader code produced different colours/patterns.
