The Dutch never focused on Africa except for South Africa. The rest being minor 2nd rate trading posts. There have been no serious Dutch colonisation attempts ever there. Portugal didn't become a serious colonisator in Africa until the 19th centrury when Holland had already totally lost any interest in Africa. The Dutch have always focused on Asia. Africa was to get from A to B, not to conquer from the Portuguese.

1) It was a private WIC enterprise with hardly any Dutch troops present. Knowing that the Portuguese attacked it during the 2nd Anglo-British war. As Holland was concentrating on England it refused to send any troops to Brasil and let the Portuguese take it.

They captured Ceylon for keeping (equally profitable as Brasil), sent their fleets, blocked the Brasilian coast, disabling trade, for 2 years, and then prepared for invasion. Portugal being on its knees begged for a treaty. The Dutch agreed in a sale. The Portuguese could keep it for over 60 tons of gold.

They did not loose Brasil, they sold it.

The first admiral who fought with his ships in line, was the famous Dutch admiral Maerten Tromp during the Battle of Downs (Slag bij Duins) in 1639, were he distroid the Second (or Fifth) Spanish Armada under D' Oquedo. The best 17th century English admiral Robert Blake (who was wounded by Tromp in the Three Day-Battle in 1653 and died of this wounds in 1658) only toke over this Dutch concept of fighting in line, because the Dutch were much better sailors then the English who needed French help
