It wasn't what I was expecting! I hit the stop button when the awful music came on at the beginning but came back later as I thought I might have learned how to halter an alpaca. I guess I did learn something - what NOT to do when handling an alpaca.
We have only had our first four alpacas for 6 months. (Two were 3 years old with little halter training, and two were yearlings with no halter training). I didn't go near them with a halter till I read "A Camelid Companion" cover to cover. I have never had a single session like yours. My time with my alpacas is peaceful AND i had great success with their training. Now they come running toward me when I appear in their paddock because their experience with me has always been POSITIVE :-)
Have you had any training yourself, about how to train alpacas? For the sake of your animals, please read "The Camelid Companion" by Marty McGee Bennett!! There is a much more intelligent, sensible, and festive way to train alpacas, and you won't need a strong man around to wrestle them! They will feel safe and not "hunted" and you will have the confidence to know you aren't freaking them out.
There are better, safer ways to halter train an alpaca. Yes, the halter can be scary for alpacas, but with proper handling and training, haltering alpacas can be accomplished without wrestling them or creating a situation where potentially the alpaca or the handlers will be injured. I would not advise this method!

So if you were to summarize your advice it is..... wrestle them until they can't wrestle anymore and then put the halter on?
Please leave the training videos to people who know what they are doing.
