When I was in high school in New Jersey in 1966 I got a chance to see that great band in Basie's home town of Red Bank. I was playing alto in the school stage band at Edison H.S. I was knocked out by Marshall Royal, Eddie Lockjaw Davis and the way everybody was so together and "tuned up."
This was the greatest band in the land. The Chief was such a sweet man too. We went to his house in the Bahamas once when my big band was playing the Sea Escape day cruise out of Miami. He dug the tapes of it I played for him. The late Jimmy Crawford was working with at the time and worked with me as well.
You have royal blood. Freddie Green's grandson works at a tobbaconist here in New York City, his name is Lloyd, not sure if is surname is Green or not ... a nice cat.
last i heard 1977 he was playing in germany with a jazz organist called mike carr from gosforth newcastle england (brother of ian carr a jazz horn player). mike and ian know my old man and mike and mike was home visiting new year 77 . next i heard of sonny was news he d died. i saw him newcastle city hall 62/63 and he did the stix there too .unbelievable
That's Swing 101, folks. They wrote the book on deep swing, playing together as a band, and whisper-to-a-shout dynamics range. That's the s**t right there.
Once saw Sonny Payne throw his sticks up to the ceiling of Carnegie Hall and cathching them in perfect time while pushing the Basie Band. Buddy Rich was sitting in the audience digging it.
I also saw Sonny Payne throwing his sticks in the air and still keeping the precision timining. I would not have thought it was possible - but I saw it happening. Sonny Payne seemed to disappear after leaving Basie - who provided him with the ultimate base for his artistry. Anybody know what happened to him?

One O'Clock Jump, this song is amazing (not to mention the theme song of the Basie Band!)
