Hey did that dryer lint have Vaseline in or on it???
I made the dryer lint fire starter with paraffin wax in the cardboard egg carton and it burned longer than the cotton ball. How ever, when it comes to storing and carrying I would choose the cotton balls.
Make lint eggs! They can last a looong time! Just roll up a ball of lint, place it in a egg carton and pour wax out it. Let it dry and go test that baby out. :-)
Just curious, have you tried Vaseline soaked dryer lint? i'll bet the burn time would be similar. I use baby oil instead of Vaseline because it' s less messy, and when it gets on your hands it makes them smelling nice and keeps your skin smooth! :)
Soaking cottonballs or dryer lint in vaseline basicly makes them a kind of petroleum light. The petroleum burns first until it is gone. The wig goes last. Ignition is so fast because the lint or cotton multiplies the surface and the petroleum in the vaseline steams out. Still very concentrated near the tissue, mixed with enough oxigen it ignites easily.
You must not have saw the trioxanne vid yet. I explained to everyone that what I was doing was testing what everyone always talks about carrying in their fire kit,, either vaseline cotton balls or dryer lint. Thus the test like I did. Burn time would be easy for vaseline soaked cotton balls as it is a coal extender.
I did a test simular to this I burned a cotton ball plain and a cottonball with vasaline, the vasaline one burned for 6.5 min the regular one burned for 1 min the vasaline works very well i start my rocket stove with them all the time.
That cottonball with vaseline looks like it could have burned for as long as the last trioxane block I used, which wasn't very long for the cost of trioxane, so cottonwool with petroleum jelly may be a cheaper alternative while doubling as fire tinder during wet weather?
is it true that the petroleum jelly acts as water proofing as well as providing extra fuel?,in other words,if the cotton ball soaked in vaseline were submerged in water could it then be lit once it's taken out of the water?or does it not work quite that well?I tried using a magnesium block last time I went camping, and it was a pest, the shaving blew all over the place,it blunts my multitool blade and it's a safety risk having a sharp knife so close to my hands in remote locations, but works wet
Thank you for the great trip about using Vaseline cotton balls. They are coated, yes? Not soaked? Or do I have to work the Vaseline into the cotton? I'm new to this so I just want to make sure I do it right.
I have vasiline soaked cotton balls in my bug out bags. They are pretty good! I also have the small jars of vasaline in my bags for this purpose and in the winter it can really help with frostbit skin.
Yes you are right... I did this video because everyone carrying stuff like this talks about carrying either cotton balls soaked in Vaseline or just plain dryer lint. That was the rational behind the video.
That is true, Those are the two standards that everyone usually speaks of. It's funny, but I was thinking the same thing for the first time as I watched this, "what if you put vaseline in the dryer lint?" My guess is that it is basically the same thing as the cotton ball...
I always liked dryer lint cause its free, but it always depends on what you had in the dryer, plus mine always has dog hair mixed in. I would try using an extender on the dryer lint, as long as it came from drying a bunch of cotton socks you should be fine,
Yeap.. You can tell the different types of lint just from the color.. The darker bluish lint has alot of synthetic fibers in it and the lighter lint has alot more cotton.
I have used both meathods but without grease aka Vaseline. I like both meathods. I have no problem using my magnism fire starter or my rod to start fires with either of these meathods GREAT VID LOCKE
Im sure it would do just as good. I will have to try that one, but most people talk about carrying either one of the two tested. Cottonballs in vaseline or just plain dryer lint.

Check out my lint logs with gel-wax. I get 15 minutes burn time and I don't have to buy cotton balls. watch?v=WG97OHxHmOg

The battle of the fibers! The vaseline also doubles as a basic first aid ingredient for chapped lips etc.

Awesome vid.

Do you warm/melt the Vaseline before dipping it? If not, I'd presume it's real messy spreading it all over the cotton ball or lint.

Why only test ignition instead of testing burn time too? Also how about Vaseline soaked lint??
