when i was a kid in the early sixties i had a wind up columbia gramerphone and on the rex record lable was sandy powel singing dr sandy it tickled me all my mates said i was a square just shows you how much they knew
Like many of the best comics Sandy Powell was not a comedian, but had the knack of playing a character to perfection, and then made the character funny by close observation of the quirks and oddities he gave them. His awful ventriloquist was a classic, unique and so well acted, and the act lasted till he retired just before his death, working well into old age. A great turn............much missed.
I'm an American actor in Boston, with a considerable interest in British comedians of the 30's (I grew up in an English school in Brazil) -- Powell's timing and personality to me seems remarkable; I hope someone can post more of his work on YouTube -- There's no other way for US viewers to see his and others like him.
It would be great if someday we could have a better quality transfer, but this is great: perhaps one of the finest, most helpful musical sketches ever found in film. It is a good cheer and "good philosophy", indeed. Thank you Mr. Powell....
I am Sandy Powell's great grandaughter and I am sat here reading all the lovely comments to my Nana (Sandy's daughter) which has made her Christmas. It's so nice to see that Sandy is fondly remembered after all these years :-)
I would like to know if Sandy's son Peter is still alive. I knew Peter when he was an assistant film editor and also when he was in concert party on Barry Island. We were
good friends at the time but lost touch years ago. Hoping you can help me. best wishes, Peter Pitt
i had the great honour of being on the bill with him in 1979 at the olypmpia theatre in dublin. watched him from the wings every night! his timing was spot on,and a very nice man and very sadly missed....
I saw Sandy Powell at the Eastbourne Hippodrome about 40 years ago, when he did - amongst other things - his famous Ventriloquist act. He was brilliant.
I believe he actually lived in Eastbourne in his later years and ran a Guest-house or Hotel with his Wife.
Oh the great Sandy, I meet him in 1978, a very nice chap and really chatty he talked about working with Gracie Fields, alas I was only 17, but have never forgot him fabulous to see a film clip, thanks for sharing this.
I am 82 and my mother took me to see sandy powell at the Birmingham hippodrome about 1935 after the show we went back stage to get his autograph,, as he was doing this sat at a table,he was haveing a stand up argument with his partner, who was no lady she was giveing him verbal hell,he went red and walked out
I will never forget that unique moment into his private life
hiya bernard, thankyou for your comment i smiled when i read it sandy was a very personal and quiet man off stage and screen..but for your interest there is a reletive who lives in rotherham south yorks of sandy who his also a comedian go see him if you get chance you will think it is sandy he is called "phil mitchel" on stage brilliant
Hi Salstream thaks for the info ,, in did not realise that there was this great interest in sandys work and that the world has not forgotton this wonderful comedian Bernard,, Birmingham UK
Wow! One of my grandmother's favourite comedians. We used to have a stack of 78-rpm records with him - Sandy the Fireman, Sandy the Burglar, several others, and Sandy Joins the Nudists. The opening line was "Yes, I've decided to join the nudists, and show the world the stuff I'm made of".

Bloody Hell that Sandy's got a lead foot, that's a clear 12points on his licence.
Talk about excessive speed and disregard for other road users.
Officer stop this man at once otherwise he will run over some unsuspecting child.
Thank God mobile phones were not available otherwise he would be using that aswell.
He is clearly a danger behind the wheel.
