Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!
See the dark night has come down on us............
All of us has now seen the dark night with the passing of this incredible musician, singer, songwriter, and true Scotsman. Gerry was a very humble man who didn't like the spotlight of being a star. He did love music which shows through his incredible recordings which are some of the greatest musical achievements of the modern age. Listen to Gerry's other music and you'll see what I mean. Gerry did one thing...put his heart into his music.
Surely this is about the diaspora after the Irish Famine 1845 to 1852? A million dead and another million on the move. We of the 'colonies' Canada, USA, Australia (as for me) can only be awe struck by this song. It's like a call from ther ancestral dirt. We did sail GR and we did prevail in so many ways beyond the contemplation of the English.
It's bewildering to think now much Gerry's music has touched me in so many ways. As hobbyist guitar player I have always considered him a top ten all time great. As my eyes tear may his family members know he will be missed by many. R.I .P Gerry
This is an amazing song from an amazing record. City to City had much more than the 2 big hits and the 3rd minor one, this song, Whatever's Written in Your Heart, and Mattie's Rag were killer tunes too. A great record start to finish. Thanks for all of the great music Gerry. You will be missed.
just heard yesterday. SO underrated! Gerry was simply one of the best singer/songwriters ever! period! I know he was a low key guy but, I don't think he realized how "good" he was. not a bad tune in the bunch. and this tune was one of the best.. ever! he riveled the best out there. and "they" know it. "sail out on the water" Gerry. you will be missed! more than you'll know. Kudos and Gratis, forever.
Gerry Rafferty is without a doubt the greatest singer and song writer of the modern age. There are no others like him, nor will there be. His voice is incredible. His music is MAGICAL!
This guy is a phenomenon. His voice sounds like he is harmonising with another singer.
I keep expecting that some day an expert will tell me that he used to sing a song twice and then have a sound expert arrange the two recordings into the one finished production. I find it difficult to think of any other way a person could sing with such wonderful harmony.
@bobcooper31 Don't know if you've heard it but his cover of The Beatles Because was fantastic, it was originally on his long since shut down website but you can now get it on his last (sadly) release Life Goes On from '09. Not an easy song to do that's for sure with those soaring harmonies but Gerry sails through with flying colours. I caught him live in '93 and he didn't dissapoint. R.I.P.
@bobcooper31 Just to add his harmonies with Joe Egan (who didn't have that dissimilar a voice) were always first class as well. I bought the 3 Stealers Wheel remasters a few years ago, excellent job they did with them.
City to city is 4 stars of 5 as an excellent album upon Rolling stone record guide. i've got it in my vinyl collection besides two Rafferty's following albums 1979 "Night Owl" AND 1980 Snakes and Ladders. thanks.
I have exactly the same LPs, probably because music industry was still promoting him at the time. I thought he was great then, but started listening to the other works lately, so now I know, he is better than great. I have ordered everything that I did not already have from amazon, some used at extortianate prices, but it's worth every penny.
After a long hiatus Gerry released this album in 78...he was almost forgotten by then.. but this record brought him back.....it is still one of my fave all time records...if you havent already check out the 3 Stealers Wheel albums...they have have the same melodic magic...You Know it Makes Sense..,..
Such a wonderful melody ( like many others Gerry's songs ) , an angel's voice , a great composer ( one of the greatest ) Why things did have to go so wrong for him? it's so sad!
Please Gerry take care ! you're still the one and only.
Gerry wrote some real gems around this time. This is such a lovely song, and rediscovering it here for the first time in 20 years I can fully appreciate it. Wish Gerry all the best.
I just found this cd behind the front passenger seat's map holder in my car . I bought it about about 2 years ago and have been looking for it since . I guess cleaning the car out every once in a while is a good thing .. lol ... I've since imported the cd on my computer .. I dont think I'll be misplacing that in any map holders . Great songs (especially this one !!!) .. I had the album on vinyl when it came out ..
This song takes me back to the days of when I was in Japan......riding around Yokohama, the expressway with my girlfriend during the summer nights....pure tranquil serenity. Thanks so much. The girlfriend in now my wife....
More than 30 years and this song rreally kicks ass! My son is only 10 years old and he said today that this is a really cool song! I really would like Gerry hear him saying that! This is not a kind of song that crosses the horizon! It's beyind that!
I feel in love the first time listening to this album....every time I hear any of the songs I go back to those early morning hours and that warm, sweet first kiss
It now transpires that he has been staying at his house on the outskirts of Florence and is either "comparatively well" or "extremely well", depending on who you hear it from. As chance would have it I walked down Baker Street yesterday and as I passed Madame Tussaud's waxworks, I swear I heard a blast of that glorious sax solo which elevated Baker Street to being the song above all others, transporting me instantly back to the happy summer of 1978.
...If there is a better pop song composed by a Paisleyite I have yet to hear it. And, no, my dear friend Andra Neil's The Sunday Times It Is A-Changin' does not qualify. "
played this that many times on the vinyl, it jumped all over the place, gerrys best album in my humble opinion, anyone got an update on his whereabouts/ hope hes okay
Last i heard he'd been taken to Hospital from his home in Hampstead due to liver problems but checked himself out the next day and no-ones heard anything since, this was a few months ago. Sad really, a truely great and underated artest.
city to city was an album that was pure and simple classic 70's rock and included folk, hits and killer song writing and production... a bad ass for sure.
I remember that Dave Mason's "Let It Flow" was another favorite of the day - also, Hall & Oats's "Abandon Luncheonette" from 1973 had some amazing cuts, forgotten too soon by many as "She's Gone" was the big hit from the LP & they moved more into 80's pop... "Had I Known You Better Then" - "When The Morning Comes" - "Las Vegas Turnaround"... I miss the variety of music from the 70's
it's very, very long time from our college time......in 1978 i've heard some of his songs on radio free europe on Andrei Voiculescu chart on 22-nd hour. What nice moments !!!! Sure , i am from Romania....
I remember having to move my chair close to the turntable when I got this LP, so that I could keep putting the needle back to the start of this song! How did we manage without the "repeat" controls that we have today on iPods and computers?
By the way, for those who do not have a local copy for mp3 players, it's on iTunes, but for a lower quality version the "vixy beta" converter is free & it lets you save youtube videos as ".mp3" files. vixy(dot)net has both the on-line version or the download
I met Gerry yesterday. Its a shame, he has Parkinsons and is a bit of an alcoholic. I felt very sorry for him, he was pleasant enough though and was more than happy to sign an autograph for me. I adore this song :)
I remember that I got Dave Mason's "Let It Flow" LP about the same time as City to City.... Also "TOTO"... and "The Floaters" and "Earth Wind and Fire" - "38 Special" - RUSH" - "Eddie Money" - "Journey" back when there were many flavors of great music... Some fine day, music will rise again! Until then, we have these gems...
Oooohhh... I almost forgot Hall & Oats "Abandon Luncheonette" God, I love that album!
The Dorm days of college, when musical tastes were cross-polenated with people from other parts of the country & world... an amazing time in the mid-late 70's - with lots of really good New Wave music that followed. The GoGo's, Pat Benatar, Human League, U2, Joan Jett, The Cars, Little River band, Pablo Cruse, Styx, Kansas, Moody Blues (loved them!) as well as the master solos of the 70's - Gordon Lightfoot..
There have been a few gems over the past 20 years, but the richness of music in those days is only rivaled by the 60's music - and there were so many from that time that were built on - not "sampled" = stolen...
The big plus for keeping on posting is that I get to listen to "The Ark" over and over! I just came from a gig where my friends were playing great covers all night. Search "Kennedy Brothers Seattle" or "Wilderover98033" - a two man band *****!
An absolute gem of an album. Thanks for reminding me to put "City to City" in the title.
I remember one of the albums neighbors on my shelf was Dave Mason "Let it Flow"(1977) - and another from the early 70's - often overlooked after their pop success was Hall and Oats - "Abandoned Luncheonette" (1973) I see that it's on iTunes, but not the complete album.
If you remember these... how about "Klattu" - Styx "Grand Illusion" "Netherlands" Throw out a list of your favorites and the hidden gems!
I remember listening to this record with my mom when I was in Nursery School & Kindergarten. And, once I was an adult and had wonderful compact discs, it was one of the very first I bought! Fantastic album, and this is still my favorite track on it!!
You are most welcome! I feel the same way. The LP was nearly worn out years ago, then I forgot it. Finding the whole CD was like being reunited to an old friend. I would love to do a video - or slide show to this! If anyone wants to give it a shot - you can extract the mp3 by pasting this URL into: vixy(dot)net It's magic! Thank you for the comment.

The big plus for keeping on posting is that I get to listen to "The Ark" over and over! I just came from a gig where my friends were playing great covers all night. Search "Kennedy Brothers Seattle" or "Wilderover98033" - a two man band *****!

I was a senior in high school when this song came out. I can't tell you how much it meant to me. Thanks. I still have the LP but no player. CD time!

Gerry's friend and fellow Scot, Barbara Dickson is singing backing vocals on this track. Their voices blend superbly well.
Gerry recorded a duet with Barbara on her 'Don't Think Twice, its Alright' album of Dylan songs in 1992 which is fantastic.
