Just a historical footnote, this song was supposedly written by Jackson in response to the death of a friend who was bisexual and was killed in a bathhouse fire.
Wow I think I've found a new artist to follow. Does he have any original songs? Thank You for this post. I've been a Jackson fan since the Hollywood Hill days and this is a great interpretation true to the original feel and Jackson's feel.
I saw this cover of one of my favorite songs, and I thought "Uh-oh; I don't think I'm going to like this very much." (Just because I love Jackson Browne's version.) I was wrong. Man, was I wrong. This is just gorgeous. What a voice. This song is an elegy written by Jackson Browne for a friend of his ( a dancer) who died. "......and somewhere between the time you arrive and the time you go may lie the reason you were alive that you'll never know." Thank you for this soulful version.
@violetjm I had the same reaction. In another post someone suggested listening to his version of Unanswered Prayers because the live Garth version was horrible. Glad I followed his suggestion.
@BerrysJSRD - To answer your question about original songs by James Dupre, in case you haven't happened upon them yet, I know of two posted on You Tube: "Memories of Heaven" and "A Hero in My Eyes." James is amazing on this song because he not only has a beautiful voice, but he uses interesting phrasing, a bit different from Jackson Browne's. Both versions are lovely, and this is coming from another fan of Jackson Browne's from way back. Peace.
Love the country music too btw. I didn't realize how much I loved country music until I heard you singing the songs. Probably because you choose such good ones to play lol. When you listen to the radio, you get a mix of really good ones, OK ones, and some that are just not very good at all.
james i have bought 10 of your cds and give away. every one loved them. i am promoting you in mississippi. if you every need a cornel parker . i will take his place. you are going to make it if you won't to. i am sure .
You sing this song so beautifully! I love listening to it on your CD as well. Probably the only CD that I listen to in its entirety every time--no skipping songs. Your song selection on the CD is so perfect, and your voice just puts it over the top. Thank you!!
OMG, I am in the prescence of greatness! I ride around with your brother while he's training as an officer and he told me to look you up! Glad I did!!!
Hi James. You are great. Lookup SarahJade music on youtube. She does some Patty Griffin covers that are awesome. You two should do a duet. Think Neil Young and Nicholette Larson. Your voices would compliment each other nicely.
I am a fan my friend. I enjoyed your original song for your brother who is serving in the USAF. Listen...I think that you should be in Nashville working on your singing career because you have the potential to be a star. I am a shool teacher at Besemer City High in NC. Jimmie Wayne is from Besemer City NC and has made it big. He is on tour with Brad Paisley. I am certain that you can do the same... Bill Busshart
I had never heard this song before. After listening to you, I went and had a listen to Jackson Brown doing this song. Not as good as I'd hoped. Dude you owned this song. They should be proud that you chose thier song. And showed them how to sing it, in my openion.
Let me join my voice to the growing legions of those who appreciate James DuPre's outstanding music. The meaningful lyrics of this song, together with James' rich, versatile voice make this one my favorite.
Excellent, soulful interpretation of this masterpiece.
However, I must mention that I almost didn't listen to it when I first saw the poster's comment "sung better than the original". C'mon, why does everything have to be a trivialized contest? This is a classic of the rock era, written and sung by one of it's greatest songwriters. The original version has tremendous meaning for many people, and will never be "topped". Let's leave that nonsense for "american idol", shall we?
